Work Text:
Squiddo was out at some party. She had no idea who's party it was, but Jumper said she should come, and she had no plans anyway, so they decided to go.
The first 30 minutes of the party started out pretty… boring. They mostly just talked to Jumper the entire time. They wanted to actually try and talk to other people, but everyone had mostly formed their own little groups. Jumper then left, probably to go talk to someone else, leaving Squiddo by herself.
Squiddo hung out by themself at the drink table for a while (and maybe had one or two drinks). Soon after, Jumper ended up coming back.
"Turns out Zam, 4C, and Kaboodle are here! You wanna go talk with them?"
"Yeah, of course!" She followed her over to a different part of the house, where PrinceZam, 4CVIT, and Kaboodle were all chatting in a group. They turned to look at Squiddo and Jumper once they noticed the two were there.
"Hey guys!!" Squiddo exclaimed with a smile. At least the party would be much less unbearable now that she actually had people to talk to.
About an hour or so passed, and the party ended up being way more fun than Squiddo expected. Maybe it was a good thing she had hung out at the drink table, she was feeling way more talkative now. That's when she felt her phone buzz in her pocket.
They quickly pulled it out, only to see a message from… Ashswag? They hadn't talked since they broke up, which was a couple months ago. Why was he texting her now?
ashswag: can u come over
ashswag: im alone
She was confused, to say the least. He's randomly texting her at.. what time is it? 12:40 AM?
Squiddo then got another message from Ashswag. An address.
Right, he said he moved, didn't he?… Huh, that wasn't too far from where the party was.
The smart thing to do would be to ignore him. Messaging them out of the blue at this time was a little suspicious. Besides, she was having fun here, and people would be confused why she wanted to leave so suddenly.
But…
Squiddo was not smart. Also, they were curious and 2 drinks in. What was the worst that could happen? Their breakup was rather peaceful, and neither of them disliked each other because of it. She knew Ashswag would never do anything to hurt her.
She glanced up at the group, who was across the room, then at her phone, then back at the group, then finally back at her phone. She stared down the notification on the screen.
She really wanted to talk with Ashswag and figure out what his deal was, but any sane person getting a random text from their ex at almost 1 in the morning would just ignore and block. She should be spending time actually enjoying herself and talking to her friends instead of fighting herself on this decision…
Squiddo let out a faint groan. God, she was the worst person to give this choice to.
"Hey, what're you looking at?" Kaboodle spoke up, startling Squiddo slightly.
"Oh, er… Just a notification, nothing important." They replied.
Ah shit, she should probably put her phone away…
Squiddo shoved her phone back into her pocket, but still couldn't stop thinking about the message.
They knew that it was a bad idea, that they should stay here and keep talking with their friends, that they should just ignore it.
But when she thought back to all that time she spent with Ashswag, she could hardly think straight.
They should probably make a decision…
She mentally weighed the pros and cons. She kinda wanted to spend time with Ashswag, but it was probably a bad idea and she still wanted to stay with her friends.
What was the harm in meeting him? He probably just wanted to reconnect!
Well, if he texted her "I'm alone" at one in the morning, it was probably a little more than reconnecting, but…
It'll be fine! She only saw him as a friend anyway!
Alright, they've made up their mind. They were going to meet Ashswag.
"Guys, I'm feeling kinda tired. I'm gonna head home and go to bed, sorry. See you guys!" Squiddo remarked to the rest of the group.
They all said their goodbyes, and shortly after she made her way out.
She made her way to her car, getting inside and putting her car in drive.
They hummed happily to themself on the way there. It was totally normal to be this excited about meeting your ex, right? They were just trying to be friends after the breakup!
She reached his house and parked her car. She got out, walked to his door, and knocked on it. She waited for a moment until Ashswag finally opened the door. Once she saw his face, it was like time froze for Squiddo.
Neither of them spoke, just trying to process the fact that they were finally seeing each other after so long.
Finally, Squiddo spoke up. "...Hey." She stepped inside, stumbling slightly.
Ashswag backed up slightly to let her in, then closed the door. "Hey."
The two were merely inches from each other, despite there being plenty of room.
"So… How've you been?" She brushed a piece of hair from her face, arm momentarily brushing against his.
"Er.. Good, what about you?"
"Good too."
"That's good to hear," Ashswag replies.
Despite the… mundane conversation, to say the least, it felt like they were still dating. As if they had never broken up in the first place.
There was a moment of silence.
"So, why'd you text me?" Squiddo eventually asked.
Ashswag paused, hesitant to answer. Finally, he replies.
"I stayed up kinda late, and it got a little lonely, and I… missed you," He admitted.
Squiddo took a second to reply, unable to decide whether she should admit her feelings to Ashswag or not.
No. That wasn't what she was worried about. She couldn't decide whether she should admit her feelings to herself.
"I— I missed you too," They responded. "I just wanted to reconnect," She added, but not fully believing it herself.
Was this a bad idea: trying to befriend her ex? Well, she was already in his house, so she figured there was no turning back. Why overthink it now?
"Yeah… reconnect," Ashswag replied.
There was another moment of silence, before he spoke up again.
"Right, we… probably should go inside. Let's go to the living roomw."
Squiddo let him lead her into the living room, despite knowing her way around his house from when they were dating. She stumbled slightly as she walked, which made Ashswag turn to look back at her.
"Are you okay?" He asked, a familiar look of concern on his face.
Squiddo glanced up to look at him. "Huh? Oh, I'm fine. I was at this party before coming here and I had like- two or three drinks, but… It should be fine." they shrugged.
"If you're drunk, then— You don't have to stay."
"Nonono, it's fine… I'm fine," she paused, then added on, "I want to stay."
He nodded, turning back around and continuing walking with Squiddo following after him.
The two sat down on the couch next to each other. They didn't turn the TV on, instead choosing to sit there without saying anything.
Ashswag inched ever so slightly towards her. Squiddo did the same.
They draped their arm around the top of the couch, right above Ashswag's head. Slowly, without either of them noticing, her arm traveled down until she was holding his shoulder.
His hand moved closer until it was gently resting on top of hers.
And in that stillness, it almost felt as if they never broke up.
Almost.
Ashswag seemed to remember this and went to pull his hand away.
But when he looked at Squiddo's face, how comfortable she looked, how… happy she seemed to be… He put his hand back.
Ashswag took the time to look over their features. Their hair, their glasses and the eyes behind them, their lashes and the way they fluttered when they blinked, their lips and how good it felt to kiss them…
He was caught off guard when he realized Squiddo staring back at him.
"Hm? Is there something on my face?" She asked, moving her hand to touch her cheek.
"No, uh.. It's nothing, sorry." Ashswag replied, slightly embarrassed.
Squiddo simply shrugged in response before going back to staring into space. Except this time, she moved slightly closer, until their bodies were right next to each other, shoulders pressed.
"Y'know, you kinda have something on your face," She spoke up, moving her face closer to his until they were practically inches away.
"Really?"
"Mhm. Right… there," She said, brushing his lip with her thumb.
They both paused, sitting there in silence. His eyes bored into hers, the tension in the room getting more tangible.
Squiddo finally crashed their lips against Ashswag's, kissing him.
And she loved it. She loved the feeling of his lips against hers, how the texture of his skin felt pressing against hers, the way he made her feel like nothing else even mattered.
She loved him. Squiddo loved Ashswag.
All Squiddo could think of was Ashswag. The way he looked, the way he acted, the way his fingers interlocked with hers, the way his mouth perfectly fit with hers like puzzle pieces.
Finally, they pulled away, staring at each other wordlessly.
"I- I'm sorry— I shouldn't have—" Squiddo blurted out, but was then interrupted by Ashswag speaking up.
"I love you."
She looked up at him in disbelief, but then replied, "I… love you too."
"Does that mean… We're back together?" Ashswag replied.
"I… I guess— If you want to."
They sat in silence for a moment before Squiddo spoke up again, "To be honest, I never really wanted to break up."
"Me neither,." He muttered. "I only went along with it because I thought it was what you wanted."
"...I only did it because I thought you wanted to."
Ashswag paused, "So we… didn't have to break up in the first place?"
"Well… At least we're back together now." Squiddo shrugged.
Ashswag looked at the time, before looking back at her. "It's getting late.. I should probably go to sleep," He finally said.
"Oh, I guess I should head out then. I'll drive myself home." They were about to get up, before Ashswag grabbed their hand.
"Didn't you say you were drunk? You probably shouldn't be driving. Did you… drive here?"
"Yeah, but… It should be fine… I think."
"I don't want you to get hurt… You should stay."
Squiddo glanced at him, a look of hesitation on her face. "Are you sure?"
Ashswag nodded in response. "I wouldn't ask you if I didn't want you to," He added.
"Mm.. Alright, if you say so."
The two got up, and made their way to Ashswag's bedroom. He opened the door to let her in, switched off the lightswitch, and closed the door behind them.
He walked forward, climbing up onto the bed first. Squiddo, albeit reluctantly, followed after him.
"Are you really sure? Because we basically just started dating, so…"
"Seriously, it's fine. Don't worry about it."
Squiddo nodded, settling in next to him. For a good moment, the two laid in silence.
"...Y'know, I'm kinda glad we get to do things like this again," Squiddo muttered.
Ashswag glanced at her, before replying, "Yeah… To be honest, it's been kinda… lonely, without you."
He paused when he heard no reply, only to realize that she had already fallen asleep. He couldn't help but admire how pretty she looked when she was sleeping.
"I love you," He whispered, before drifting off to sleep himself.
