Chapter 1: Please. Just bring them peace

Chapter Text

As soon as Blue's rapier hit, he smiles. Gods, they'd gotten better at fighting. He cpuldn't be prouder of them. Well, the one exception being calling Her the Frosty Cunt. Or helping him disembowel who he had dubbed, Bitch Number Two.

But he wasn't thinking about that. No, he just sees the rage in their eyes and just sighs. Well, if ge gad to greet Death one way, he's thankful it's his Star.

His vision goes blurry as a tear rolls down his cheek. He may have even said that. He holds on to any memories of The Before.

And his vision.

Goes.

Black.

Copper opens his eyes in a memory he knows by heart. He's repalyed this moment over and over again.

He leans against the doorframe of Blue's room, his face a smile. He looks on lovingly as Blue struggles to brush Orla's hair.

"Fucking hells, this one tangle!" they yelp, Orla squeezing her eyes shut.

"Love, would you please let me help?" He asks, yet again. Blue lets out a stubborn "harumph" before handing over the brush to him. He laughs, and gently moves Blue to the side.

Orla flinches just slightly. She's still young and Copper hasn't really been around her much. Well, since their engagement was called off. Even when they were engaged, Copper still treated Orla like a little sister.

Blue inhales sharply, and he knows their probably worried about what Orla would do or say.

"Orla, do you have a favorite color?" Copper asks, gently brushing through the ends of her hair.

"Um…" the young gnome glances at her older sibling nervously. Blue nods. "I like the color copper. OOO! LIKE YOUR HAIR!" Orla exclaims. Copper chuckles and he glances around the room.

Dorynn does a double take when he sees the woman. He knows this memory. He knows she wasn't there before.

Her long black dress is freckled with stars and…

Oh, he realizes, that's Death.

And the memory fades.

Death stands right next to Dorynn as he watches this memory play out this time. He watches as a younger, innocent version of him, lays next to a younger version of Blue. Dorynn watches as Copper kisses them gently.

Oh, to remember a time when the only danger was getting caught by Blue's fucker of a father.

"They love you, you know," Death's voice isn't what Dorynn expected at all. It's gentle, like a light breeze.

"I know. They called me their Sun. Their love, for the sake of the gods." He replies, watching a young Blue giggle and wrap their arms around a young Copper.

"That wasn't a question, dearest Shatterer" Death almost seems to smile. "They've always loved you. They do love you. They're scared though. And losing someone you love? That is the biggest wake-up call."

Dorynn nods, looking back at the young versions of him and Blue. Gods, what he wouldn't give to go back.

"They are my everything, Death. They mean more than anyone or anything to me. They are my way home. They are my home." The copper-haired boy looks at the goddess. "Their arms around me are like walls, protecting me from danger. Their beautiful eyes are what I want to wake up to every morning. Their retorts are just the most adorable thing. And their loyalty, their spite, their stubbornness. That's what I love most. My Blue, my Star, my love. They may not be the brightest at times, but they are mine. And I am theirs. Fully. No matter what world we end up in, I know that we will always be together."

Death seems to ponder this for a moment.

"What would you give for them?" She asks.

Dorynn says this without thinking, "The Before. I would give up any memories I had from before the years I was…lost. Every time. For them. I love them."

"I see. I won't take from you. But for them? I'll need something. I shall visit soon. For now? You have convinced me. You may cheat me this time, Shatterer. Next time you may not be so lucky."

Copper wakes with Blue sobbing, calling him everything to "my Sun" to "you absolute bastard."

And all he can think is that he's glad to still be there. To know them and to love them.
