Work Text:
Tomorrow was the big day.
And with this night becoming less young, Benson was having trouble sleeping. He tossed and turned, groaning as ‘what ifs’ clouded his thoughts.
What if I don’t have enough wings?
What if the decorators get the colors screwed up?
What if Apple Sauce devours the cake?
What if I choke during our wedding vows?
Sitting up on the shared bed, Benson brought his hands up to his face and rubbed at his temples, letting out a sigh. He then blinked repeatedly when the lamp on his nightstand had been turned on.
“Benson…are you alright…?” Asked his fiancée in a tired voice.
Turning his head and watching Pam join him by also sitting up whilst rubbing her eyes, the gumball machine frowned. Tomorrow was the most important day of their lives and right now Benson could feel guilt for having caused the woman to wake up.
Again did he sigh, shaking his head. He was about to answer until he felt the latter’s hand press against his abdomen. He gave her a worried gaze before taking hold of her hand.
“...I’m sorry, Pam… It’s just that tomorrow’s our wedding and…”
“You want everything to be perfect, don’t you…?”
“I…yes, of course! But… what if…?”
When Benson was about to turn his head away from Pam, the latter brought both her hands up to his face and cupped his cheeks.
“Benson, you shouldn’t be hard on yourself…” The former scientist said softly, offering her fiance a smile, “Whether tomorrow goes perfectly or amiss won’t make me love you any less.”
“I get the sentiment, honey,” Benson responded back, his voice being slightly louder. Despite how calm he tried to make himself sound, there was more concern in the tone of his voice.
“But I want tomorrow to be extra special. For you.”
He then took a deep breath and exhaled. Letting himself stare into Pam’s eyes, Benson could see the joy and gentle warmth in them. Those eyes when the two first met, her warm smile which made his heart flutter, and the deep physical affection which his body craved for, the woman deserved everything and more.
“You’re the first girl who came back to me after the guys and I returned from space.”
Benson then reached his arms out and wrapped them around his beloved.
“And…you’ve been with me longer than…well…”
He could feel his dome growing warm, his gumballs inside feeling as if they could melt. The intensity of his feelings only grew when Pam returned the embrace, planting a kiss on his left cheek.
“Benson…” The other whispered sweetly, giving the gumball machine another kiss, this time on his lips, “...I love you… I don’t want you to strain yourself for me…
“I’ve been looking forward to our wedding ever since you proposed to me at the park. I understand that you want to make me happy on our day tomorrow, but I’m already happy just by being with you.”
She kissed her beloved once more, only to be pulled into another kiss by the latter.
It didn’t take long for the couple’s kiss to deepen. With the couple in each other’s arms, Benson had them both lying back down together. He ran his hands down to Pam’s waist while she caressed his back.
As much as the gumball machine wanted to take their blossoming passion further, however, he relented when he ended their kiss and rolled onto his back. Catching his breath with Pam, he smiled next. It was when he felt his chest’s knob being touched did his body tense a little. Before he felt himself relaxing right after upon feeling his abdomen being touched anew by his fiancée.
He had no words that he could say to express how safe and loved he felt with this woman. His soon-to-be wife.
Turning his head to the left, Benson quietly gazed at Pam, who was gazing back at him with a smile on her face.
For the remainder of the night, those ‘what ifs’ were put behind him.
