Sweet Like Candy

Summary:

Different vices for different doctors, but shared intimately.

Notes:

This has been quite the exciting week! I had so much fun experimenting with a shorter length than I've written in the last couple of years and pairing characters together that we don't normally see in shipping circles. I hope that you guys either some of the individual prompts or the week as a whole, I've really loved reading your comments <3

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Devon was pretty sure that he was never going to be able to stop smelling like coffee. It had gotten him all the way through med school and the endless hours of studying and coursework that came with such a heavy load. It had gotten him through the applications for his residency program and the subsequent move from New York. It was what was getting him through his intern year, but at this point he was pretty sure that the ground up beans could be smelled through his sweat on days like today.

He had brought a thermos of it with him to work when he had gotten up early. His best friend Priya, who worked in Georgia for the time being, had teased him about it when she was manipulating him into also sitting with her to eat breakfast instead of pretending to sleep for an extra couple of minutes. Her words hung heavy in his head as he walked through the halls of the hospital to the intern lounge where his boyfriend would surely be hanging out.

Sure enough, Bradley was cross legged on the floor in front of the low coffee table that was positioned in front of the double couches that were meant for sitting and specifically not for sleeping. He had a book spread out in front of him alongside a handful of printed out reports that he was translating into something strange in a lined notebook. Devon didn’t have the energy to ask what that was all about, not when he knew that Irving and Conrad were going to be running him in circles just like they had been for weeks.

“Hey, baby,” Bradley grinned when he saw that his partner had been lingering in the doorway.

“Hey,” Devon snapped out of his head, and all the cases that he had meant to think over but were just melding into one horror-patient in his mind. He smiled softly as he walked over and placed his thermos down on the table beside Bradley’s work.

He used the hand that had been freed to cup his partner’s jaw so that he could have an easier time bringing their lips together in a sweet and short-lived kiss. He stood up so that his bag could finally stop choking him and then licked his lips, shocked at what he tasted. “Did you not have coffee this morning? You taste like sugar.”

“Monster energy,” Bradley chuckled as he reached down next to him and procured a can that looked to be mutilated already, which spoke of the anxiety the other intern had been facing. “You headed in to the ER yet?”

“I’ve got four minutes. Cuddle?” Devon dropped his bag down onto the couch behind them and flopped down onto the very uncomfortable floor so that he could be close to his partner.

“Yeah,” Bradley sighed and leaned into the warmth of the other man while his eyes kept skipping over the letters on the page to continue his work. It was hurried and impatient, but still perfect.
