Driving Lesson

Summary:

Moving on.

Notes:

Happy Lunar New Year. Happy Valentines.
Gotta write this to process the ending. I'm so "happy" right now.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

There’s a maximum limit to how long a person could take practical driving lessons in a day. It’s generally limited to two hours for the first stage but since Satomi had gone onto the second, the new limit for him was three.

“Okay, keep to the right side, slow down. Blinker to the right” Yuji, the instructor, pointed to the window on Satomi’s side, “Mirror, mirror, check it.”

It’s always to turn on his right first, then left, and then right again. He’d been doing this for the entire afternoon, always on Tuesdays and weekends because there’s no school on either and also because he didn’t have to work part-time anymore. Satomi’s schedule had changed with a new goal in mind, getting himself a driver’s license.

“Keep to the right. Now look back,” Yuji droned in his clear and robotic voice, foot ready on the emergency break beside him. Satomi’s had the courses remembered and he found that the paper exam was fairly easy compared to the actual driving test.

“Now we going straight. Speed. Slowww, slow. Before breaking you look here.”

Satomi followed Yuji’s hand and looked up to the rear-view mirror before directed his eyes back to the front.

What should I have after this? The first thing that came to mind was that sushi place across the road from the driving school, it didn’t look as expensive as the one that night. There’s also one that served pretty decent ramen right next to it. He hadn’t had ramen in a while. And ramen the last time was eaten with the story of how horrible the boss’ son was at anything physical.

“Okay, straight. Straight. Straight. Straight. And loop.”

Or I mean… there’s always the family restaurant.

“One more time. Right, left, and right. Now stop,” Yuji warned, his voice growing slightly louder, “Stop. Stop.”

Satomi slowly hit the break. Body barely moving from the momentum.

But his phone fell out.

It slid and stopped at Yuji’s thigh, “What do you want?” the man picked it up and asked Satomi.

The screen was surprisingly on and it showed him his last few conversation with Kyouji. He must have butt dial– no, no, butt… pushed?–on it while he drove.

Yuji continued, “Do you want to pocket it or should I just put it here?” His instructor's finger pointed to the front.

“See ya next time,” Kyouji had said.

So Satomi nodded and smiled, "You can just put it there, please.”

Getting this over with, the instructor agreed and turned the screen off. And put Satomi’s phone inside the glove box. And then promptly closed it shut.

Fueled by 'Who Knows' by Daniel Caesar and Wayama's QnA:
Q: Will there ever be a day when Satomi gets a driver's license and drives Kyoji around?
A: That day will come, definitely.
