The office was quiet. Most sensible people had gone home. But neither Freddie nor Bel were sensible: they were ambitious. So the fact that the heater had gone out in the office and their boss said everyone could go home early was not an early start to the weekend, but an opportunity to prove themselves invaluable. They would get ahead on their assignments and perhaps even work on personal projects that they wanted to pitch.
They pulled a bench from the hall over to Freddie’s desk because it was farther from the window and sat pressed against each other while they worked. It worked out that while Bel was using both hands to type copy, Freddie could scribble notes with his right while his left arm hugged Bel close. He had tried to give her his coat, but she said this was better.
It was a miracle they got any work done. Both of them were constantly trying to find the right balance between enough body heat and inappropriate contact, although perhaps the nervous movements also kept them warm. However, eventually even they had to admit defeat when their fingertips were turning white. Bel treated them to a hot cocoa from the closest shop for the bus rides ahead as they each returned home.
