Work Text:
I hugged the blanket tightly,
staring at the wall.
I could’ve sworn something was happening today, but what was it? I can’t remember for the life of me.
Was it ratchet’s anniversary for walking? Actually, did I make that an anniversary?
Was it..Was it my wife’s birthday?!—wait no, her birthday already passed.
My mind raced with any possible solution, any possible event that could be happening this very moment.
My back straighten when I heard a voice outside the bedroom door, but only relaxed when I realized who it was.
My wife, Veronica Gasket.
I truly love her..sure she has some problems of her own, especially with her anger but every one has problems surrounding their emotions and feelings.
It’s normal.
I got up from the bed and began to walk towards the door.
When I heard her voice from behind the door, she seemed..upset in a way, maybe she was, or maybe she’s tired? Who knows what the answer could be.
I gently opened the door and looked side to side of the hallways, and there I spotted her, at the end of the hall on the left.
“Hun?”
I called out with a worried face.
“I’m fine.”
She yelled back quickly, a bit too fast–something is definitely up.
I looked closer, my breathing slowing down.
..something is definitely up.
The way she’s moving like she had been shot in the leg,
The way her hand and claw clenched tightly like it was going to break,
The way she paused after every step,
everything she did just told me the truth, she doesn’t move like that or speak like that if she wasn’t mad.
I walked out the room and strolled towards her, my hand lifting upwards to my chest.
“Hey, hun!” I called out again, but tried keeping my voice low and steady.
Veronica stopped, her hand and claw reaching for her dress and grabbing it tightly.
“What..?”
She groaned, turning her head towards me but not meeting my eyes.
“I was planning on making some pasta but then I was like..oh she may not like that..do you want me to make you something different for dinner?”
I asked, stepping closer but not too close.
Veronica seemed to freeze, her grip growing tighter.
She sighed. “…liver would be nice.” She grumbled, already beginning to walk away.
I nodded while humming.
I would ask her what kind of liver, but I learned to not pester her all at once when she’s possibly mad, that would quickly lead to one of her..bursts of emotions is what I like to call them..they’re not pretty but everyone experiences one at least once in their lives.
It’s just she experiences them more frequently, more often, and that’s fine, people are like that, I used to be like that and I’m fine!
I watched her walk away then pause. I flinched as I slowly backed away, my shoulders tensed.
Veronica turned towards me, her yellow eyes were relaxed but pierced through me like a sword.
“..why are you just standing there?”
She groaned, her hand letting go of her dress and pointing at me.
“Oh, nothing, nothing.. I was just leaving actually!” I clapped my hands together as my body stood frozen on the metallic floor.
Veronica hummed, her eyes squinting with suspicion as her mouth frowned.
“You’re lying.”
She stated with a growl as her body fully turned towards me.
“Huh? No! I’m not lying to you, Veronica!”
I quickly stammered, waving my hands.
“..Hmn, sure whatever you say Monsieur, you seriously don’t think I see through your little facade?”
Veronica stepped towards me, just her face made my body shake.
“What facade?” I asked, straightening my back.
“Don’t act all dumb, conveniently making dinner? Just so happened to walk out here? You’re planning something.”
I blinked.
“What? I don’t understand—“
“You do understand, you’re just playing dumb.”
“P-Playing dumb?” I stuttered, recoiling my hands towards my body.
“Yes. Playing dumb, I have been watching you, Monsieur, you have been trying to kill me.”
Veronica growled like a rabid dog.
“Kill you?! Why would I kill you?!”
My voice cracked as my body shook like I was in ice cold water.
“Oh I don’t know..it could be many reasons, but I can guess.”
Veronica nodded her head as she stomped towards me, I so badly wanted to move, back away but my feet felt implanted into the ground.
“You don’t love me, you want my money, you have been cheating on me, you want to run away and get a new life, it could be many things, just tell me which one.”
Veronica’s voice was far too calm for how she was acting.
“None! I don’t to kill you! I never wanted or want to kill you!”
“Liar! You didn’t deny any of the options I mentioned, maybe it’s specific, who the fuck knows! Only you do!”
Veronica yelled, pushing me to the ground, my back slamming on the cold surface.
“Who is they? Who is your real lover?!”
Veronica shouted, her foot stepping on my chest.
“You! You’re my lover! My real lover!” I spoke quickly without thinking, grabbing onto Veronica’s ankle.
“Quit lying!” She demanded, digging her foot into my chest. “I know what you really think of me.”
Her voice saddened like she was about to start sobbing right then and there. I looked up at her face and my face scrunched in worry.
Her eyes looked watery as her unibrow furrowed, her mouth was downward and bared her teeth while her breathing quickened.
“You never loved me, you only married me out of pity.” Tears started to fall down her face. “Why did you even marry me?”
“Because I love you!”
“But you don’t really love me, do you?!” Veronica yelled, her foot digging deeper in my chest. “What’s the real reason you married me? Huh? Was it because you felt like you had to?”
“It’s because I love you! That’s the real reason!”
“Then why did you leave me back in high school?”
“Because my family moved! My parents didn’t..exactly approve but I tried finding you again after we moved!”
Veronica was quiet, staring at me while her chest went up and down.
“..liar, you found another woman, you fell in love and made a kid, I became a back-up plan, for you.”
My eyes widened, none of what she was saying was true, I tried to keep my past vague when I moved away from robot city..I guess she interpreted it in a different way than I expected.
“I’m sorry, Veronica, I really am.”
“But you’re not sorry are you?!” Veronica yelled, leaning close to my face. “You still didn’t deny a thing. I must be correct then, right?.!”
I opened my mouth but nothing came out, it was like my voice didn’t want to be part of the argument we were having.
Veronica’s claw wrapped around my throat and squeezed tightly.
I started to gasp for air, I grabbed my wife’s arm and shoulder as I tried to breathe.
“You fell in love with another woman and was so happy that you had a kid, then she died and you came to me as a back-up, for something that failed!”
Veronica yelled, squeezing my throat tighter.
I blinked, my vision became blurred, I barely saw my wife’s face. I choked and clawed at Veronica’s arm.
She didn’t usually choke me, the worst she usually done was throw things at me.
Everyone has trouble with their emotions.
It’s normal.
Veronica just gets more angry easily, everyone has a problem with their anger.
That’s normal.
Hell, I even struggled with my anger for a bit when I was a toddler, everyone has struggled with their emotions at least once.
Then suddenly it felt like a lightbulb dinged in my head.
It probably wasn’t the greatest idea, but, it could calm her down.
I kicked her leg and she immediately got off me.
I gasped for air before looking up at her, my eyes already feeling like they had tears streaming down my face.
I leaped forward.
“what are you doing?!” My wife yelled.
I climbed on top of her and hugged her tightly.
“Get off me!” She yelled once more. I didn’t like ignoring her demands but it could calm her down.
“It’s okay, hunny, it’s okay.” I whispered in her ear, burying my head into her neck.
My arms wrapped around her waist in a grip I didn’t know I had. I turned her around to her side and continued to hug her while snuggling into the crook of her neck.
I felt her chest heaving against mine as it seemed her body went stiff.
Slowly, her heaving chest slowed, her head resting on my shoulder.
“Monsieur.” Veronica spoke, her voice soft.
“Yeah.?”
“..do you really love me?”
“Yeah, always have..it feels rude to say but that woman barely meant a thing to me.” Pulled her closer, placing gentle kisses along her neck.
Veronica held back a chuckle. “Good.”
She wrapped her arms around my body and pulled me closer than I did.
Our bodies felt like they were too close for comfort one would say.
But I would say it’s perfectly comfortable for me.
My wife’s leg was placed on top of mine as her grip tightened.
“Say you love me.”
She whispered, her voice sounding like she would choke me out again in a second.
“I love you, Veronica.” I murmured, hugging her tightly.
“..are you okay, dear?”
I asked, slightly lifting my head. Veronica didn’t say a thing, not even the sound of her breath was heard.
“..I’m..okay.”
My wife spoke suddenly, breaking the silence with her quiet voice.
“I’m sorry, Veronica.” I whispered, rubbing her back.
She didn’t say anything again, but that’s fine, just us cuddling and hugging was the right apology for me.
“Don’t you fucking pull that shit again.” Veronica grumbled, I felt her hands claw at my back.
“Of course, hun.” I nodded, i smiled helplessly as I kissed her neck again.
..I love my wife, and she loves me too.
