Work Text:
Q: Shane, to begin we have to ask about the transfer. Obviously, it was a massive shock to the hockey community at large as many thought you would retire a Metro. Was it like that for you? Or did you always imagine you would eventually join Ilya here in Ottawa?
HOLLANDER: No, definitely not. I never once imagined this outcome. I have so much love for the Metros and Montreal as a city. I didn't expect to leave, but this is sports and things happen. And although it was unexpected, I am looking forward to winning some hardware with my hometown team.
Q: It's hard to imagine any team being willing to let go of their best player, particularly outside of a trade situation. Could you shed some light on what the friction was between you and the team?
HOLLANDER: The specifics are between me and the team. But what I can say is that there is no animosity. I love the guys on that team. The coaches. The staff. I feel like I grew up with all of them and I will still be cheering them on. Montreal will always be in my heart.
Q: That's great to hear, but I will say that's pretty different from what some of the Metros players have said about the situation. There's a pretty viral clip going around of one of your former teammates saying that the team lost their trust in you and that situations in your personal life were compromising your integrity. What do you have to say to that? Do you think he was referring to your relationship with your new captain?
HOLLANDER: I don't keep up with what is said about me by the media or by other players so I'm not familiar with the clip you're referring to, but everything I said stands true from my end. It's hard to hear when it's people you respect saying those things about you. I can't tell you why he said that, I don't know.
I would hope that my accomplishments on the Metros would speak for themselves, but if there is any doubt I can say for certain that my team, my integrity, and hockey is and has always been a priority for me, no matter what happens in my personal life. But if that is how he feels, I can't fault him for expressing it.
Q: Another former teammate of yours also implied in a pre-season interview that the team would be just fine without you. Does that hurt to hear after everything you've accomplished with that team?
HOLLANDER: Of course. Like I said, I can only hope that I have made my mark on the team and that the results speak for themselves. I feel very lucky for every success I've had with the Metros organization. My former teammates are driven, competitive, and obviously very talented. I wish them all the best.
Q: Rozanov? You look like you have something to add?
ROZANOV: Hollander is a nice and forgiving person. Me? Not so much.
If players on the Metros want to say their piece that is okay. No really, is okay. Shane planned to retire a Metro. He gives every piece of himself to the things he cares about. He is a crazy competitive asshole if you can believe, even more so than me. But yes, if Montreal players want to discredit his impact, his greatness, his dedication, or his leadership, that is okay.
But before this, they must do one thing. They must find every championship ring they have won in a Metros jersey and trash it, burn it, return it to MLH, or better yet, send it direct to Shane. I will give you our address. And if they won any assist awards passing to Shane, any defensive awards defending Shane's offense, any All Star selections, any fucking goalie awards, I don't care, I will expect to see this in my mailbox.
Everything the Montreal Metros have from the past 10 years is thanks to Shane Hollander. And now, they are nothing. He is the best player such a sorry franchise has ever seen and probably not, but maybe, just maybe there is a baby being born that will be drafted in 2040 and will be better than all of us but by then these sad Metros players will be sitting in their empty fucking trophy rooms thinking "what could have been if I was not a dickhead".
But they made their choice. Horrible choices that ended up making me and Shane teammates, which we were never going to do, as a gift to this league. But now, thank you to stupid Montreal Metros. We are teammates. And what the world already knows is this: apart, we win many trophies, yes? But together?
Together, we do not lose.
