Sky Blues and Caramel Browns

Summary:

Suddenly Karamatsu is very thankful that he learned about all the different shades of blue.

Notes:

Instead of updating my other stories I decided I'd write this right here. The Karabita everyone has been waiting for. After watching a little Osokun, and seeing a few screenshots, I noticed that Chibita's eyes are blue and adorable and I felt like Karamatsu would appreciate that even more than I did. That's. Literally all the context to this.

I'm working on the other stories too, with the next chapters half done, and I actually have the last chapter for Oden Makes You Say Weird Things completely done. So look out for updates!

Work Text:

Blue.

Chibita’s eyes are baby blue.

No no, not baby blue. It was a richer, deeper shade, yet it was still clear, and like a mirror it reflected the twinkling stars on the night sky - would have, if they were outside, but alas, they were currently enjoying the comforts of their shared apartment, shared couch, and shared blanket, so instead of looking for the little dipper in his iris, Karamatsu was trying to figure out what scene was currently playing in the film they chose. They were having a movie night of some sorts; Karamatsu couldn’t exactly recall why they were sitting on the couch, skin pressed together, and even through the thin layer of clothing he could feel Chibita’s warmth, making his pulse speed and his head dizzy.

For now, Karamatsu waved the dirty thoughts away. He had more pressing matters to examine.

He hadn’t been studying his face for awfully long, but with each passing second he got more and more nervous, waiting for the moment his friend- boyfriend would turn to him, and question why the fuck was he staring at him instead of watching the movie dammit, Karamatsu was the one who picked it! Lady Luck has been on his side so far though, and seemingly Chibita was too engrossed in the movie to notice that the Matsuno was apparently mapping up his face. A few seconds ago Karamatsu was staring at the screen too, with all the excitement of a five year old, the movie he picked was something he had been meaning to watch ages ago, but apparently, like the lovesick fool he was, he couldn’t go another second without looking to his side first, to drink in the figure of his beau. And that was the fated moment when he noticed, when he really noticed that Chibita’s eyes were a sparkling blue colour, and suddenly the movie swam out of focus, the only goal on Karamatsu’s mind being to figure out exactly what shade of blue was the one he fell in love with.

Blue had always been his favourite colour. It is the coolest colour, after all. It is manly, it is the colour of the clear sky, the colour of the deep ocean. It gives off a mysterious vibe, and Karamatsu loved being mysterious. But this colour had never played with the strings of his rusty heart before, never had it made the breath hitch in his throat, and neither had it ever wiped his brain clean, filling his thoughts up with a shade of blue that made him feel safe, made him fall in love over and over again, made him weak in the knees, and oh what a gorgeous colour it was!

The lighting is distorting the colour a little...Is it royal? Sapphire? Or maybe azure?

(And yes, Karamatsu could name at least twenty shades of blue, and recognize them too. For very good reasons. Determining the exact eye colour of his boyfriend was one of those very good reasons.)

The setting changed, making the room swim in a darker shade. In these circumstances, Chibita’s eyes almost seemed steel blue, which, when Karamatsu thought about it, made a lot of sense. Just like steel, Chibita was strong, and rigid, refusing to bend under pressure. He could lean on him for support, and he would still stand tall. As tall as Chibita was, at least.

He tried to recall the times they were little children, who have yet to experience the cold and ruthless reality, their lives consisting of nothing but laughter and pranks. And some fist fights too here and there, but those had no place in Karamatsu’s romantic pondering. What he’d rather remember are Chibita’s eyes from that time, but he soon realized that as a child, he was too much of a thick headed dummy to pay any attention to Chibita’s face. Why hadn’t he started studying those mesmerizing eyes before? Back then, he couldn’t even be bothered to remember most things, afraid that he would waste precious time, time that he could spend playing with his brothers without a care in the world. But now when he was grown up and so full of love and passion, he could and would spend the remainder of his life looking into Chibita’s eyes, taking in all the features of his round and perfectly squishy face, all the little details that made him him, Karamatsu wanted to remember it all, study it and then take a test in the darkness, under the covers, when he could only rely on his memory and instinct to remember where to reach and what to touch - and whoa he was getting carried away there, wasn’t he?

But either ways, he was content with the current scenario. Just the two of them, the voices from the television creating a steady background noise, the lights falling on Chibita’s face just right for Karamatsu to admire his adorable cheeks and - why did the movie stop?

“Karamatsu.”

Seizing up at the mention of his name, he quickly wiped the dopey smile off of his face, replacing it with one of his cool guy smirks. He could not stop his voice from breaking though.

“Y-yes! What is it my dove?!”

“You’ve been starin’ for at least twenty minutes now.”

Oh fuck.

His shoulder dropping, Karamatsu was determined to keep the smirk on his face, even though it became just a little too tight and forced for it to be genuine. But when Chibita turned to fully face him, eyebrows scrunched together in a not at all amused manner, Karamatsu bowed his head, ashamed of the fact that he was caught performing such a sinful act.

“Y...you noticed?”

“I can see you from the corner of my eyes y’know.”

“O...oh…”

Silence.

“So? Is there somethin’ you want to tell me?”

Even more silence.

Karamatsu looked up just in time to notice that Chibita looked all kinds of impatient, giving him one of his ‘cut to the chase before I drag the words out of your mouth with force’ looks. Straightening his back, Karamatsu swallowed. He was sure that even in the dim room, Chibita could see the blush that was beginning to spread across his face, travelling all the way down his neck and up the tip of his ears. He was staring right at Karamatsu, those blue eyes staring holes into the sextuplet, rendering him speechless, unable to drag out the compliments he had prepared well ahead. The clock was ticking, he had no time to come up with new ones, so he decided he’d deliver the first thoughts that flashed across his mind, no matter how awkward and uncool they sounded. So, looking back down to his lap, Karamatsu opened his mouth.

“I...just noticed that your eyes are really...pretty.” Ow. He almost winced at that. Compared to his usual shower of words of adoration, this was lackluster at best.

But Chibita didn’t think so. Because when Karamatsu looked up, he saw the same fond smile Chibita always gave him when he said something funny or touching- that smile was the reward he was always thriving for, and he was given what he longed for without putting real effort into it? It didn’t feel right.

“Wow, kinda weird hearing a compliment from you when it’s under thirty words...but thanks big boy.”

Ah! His heart was soaring yet again! Pupils dilating, he could swear he saw stars twinkling in the darkness, congratulating him on the job! This alone was enough to push Karamatsu back into his routine, and with a smooth motion, he brought a hand up to run it through his silky locks, and with his free hand he clenched the fabric of his shirt. Yes. Now this was true drama! True romance! True passion!

“I can’t help but be mesmerized by your beauty Chibita! You keep me under your spell, rob the words from my lips with just a simple glance-”

“Okay okay you’re ruinin’ it!” There was no venom nor bite in his tone, nor was there any real anger in the way Chibita swatted Karamatsu’s shoulders with a laugh. There it was, the laugh of an angel...the only thing prettier than Chibita’s toothy smile was his laugh. Not to be mistaken with his cackling, even though that too was one of Karamatsu’s favourite sounds ever. Whenever he heard that little ‘keke’, his heart would always flutter. Still, his laugh, his real laugh that came from somewhere deep within, filled with all the emotions his dear boyfriend tried to choke back, that was the sound he wanted to hear whenever he woke up or went to sleep. Hearing it now was enough for Karamatsu to relax completely against Chibita, no longer afraid that he would be scolded for staring so intently at him before. In fact, he even had the confidence to press a few kisses on Chibita’s bare scalp! Ah, his skin was so soft under his lips, just like always…

A gentle shove told Karamatsu to settle down a little, so that he did. Chibita was reaching for the remote, so he leaned back against the couch, ready to actually pay attention to the movie he was so insistent on watching. But when the scene remained frozen for several more seconds, he turned back to Chibita, who was holding the remote, a thoughtful expression on his face. The Matsuno was about to ask what was wrong, but he was beaten to the task.

“Why are they pretty?”

“Pardon?”

“Why...why do you think my eyes are pretty?” Chibita sounded so small just then, and Karamatsu decided he didn’t like it when he was talking like that. Someone so passionate and hardworking and lovable shouldn’t sound so self conscious.

He almost broke into another one of his monologues. Almost. But that small part of him, the one that stood as the voice of reason, said no. No, this was no time for flowery language. This wasn’t the time to talk Chibita’s ear off. He had to make Chibita understand- understand that he’s perfect in every way, every little part of him is beautiful and should be envied, that he’s absolutely drop dead gorgeous no matter what anyone says.

But what could he say? What was the answer that would convey all his feelings without a room for fault?

Because they are the softest of baby blues. The most dazzling of azures. The richest, deepest royal blue he has ever seen. The most vibrant sky blue, filling his heart with a desire for adventure. The strongest of steel blues, making him feel like he’s secure and safe.

No. The answer...it was simple.

“Because they are your eyes.”

And that must have been the right answer, or at least the answer Chibita was waiting for, because he was smiling again, much softer this time, even if he wasn’t looking at Karamatsu. It didn’t matter really, because even like this he could see the sparkle in Chibita’s eyes, and the blush that steadily spread across his cheeks. Even an idiot like Karamatsu would be able to tell that Chibita was really happy about what he had heard.

“G-gee Karaboy...that was actually pretty romantic.”

“It was?!”

“Yeah, I like that one!”

He was overjoyed that his simple compliments saved Chibita’s happiness the second time this evening. They felt a little too plain on his lips, like a rose without its petals or thorns, but they did come straight from his heart. Well, Chibita was a very straight-forward man, the typical no nonsense type, so really, Karamatsu shouldn’t be surprised that his raw feelings, without the bravado and sprakles, those feelings would be the ones that reached Chibita.

“Hm...Karaboy, look at me for a sec.”

“Yes? Is there something on my face my love?”

Then there were hands cupping his cheeks.

Oh. So this is where tonight would lead. Of course...now that they had laid their cards out, let their feelings show in their purest forms, it was time to get even closer. Karamatsu was sure Chibita could feel just how warm his cheeks were- to him, they felt like they were on fire. The fires of passion burn the hottest! Even after dating for a while, after all those kisses, hesitant touches, the Matsuno still wasn’t used to getting touchy. He was plenty affectionate, but feeling Chibita’s skin under his, it never failed to sent a jolt of electricity through his spine. Not even bothering to close his eyes, Karamatsu pursed his lips, ready for the kiss of a divine being to land on them-

“The fuck are you doing?”

“W-weren’t we going to kiss?”

“That ain’t exactly what was on my mind.”

“O-oh.” Now that was just embarrassing. Averting his eyes, Karamatsu began staring at his lap instead, finding it a lot more awe inspiring than Chibita’s sharp gaze. But when that action was followed by a “Look back at me!” from him, Karamatsu couldn’t help but tense, his eyes snapping right back to Chibita. What was on his mind…?

“...Your eyes are caramel.”

“E-eh?” That reaction was beyond graceful or cool, his deep voice abandoning him and leaving him with his higher, natural voice. Where can he even put this?

“D-don’t ‘eh’ at me dammit! I’m tryin’ to compliment you too!”

“Ah! M-my apologies I didn’t-” Wait- why was Chibita so insistent on returning his earlier compliments? Karamatsu was starting to feel self conscious under his gaze. Compared to Chibita’s blue eyes that held all the wonders in the world, his were...pretty boring. Sure, when he was staring into the mirror he always told himself he looked amazing. More than amazing. But he also couldn’t deny, that as pretty as his eyes were, there were another five, perfectly identical pair of brown eyes in the world. That’s why he started wearing coloured contacts after a while. Another desperate attempt to differentiate himself from his brothers. Naturally, it ended in another failure when his eye got infected. He hadn’t put in his coloured contacts ever since. He didn’t even notice as his (nervous) smirk slowly fell, turning into something small and fragile. “I don’t think there’s...anything special about my eyes. It’s the same colour as my dear brothers’”

“No it’s not.” As if Chibita could read his thoughts, he pressed his forehead against Karamatsu’s, hands slowly sliding down from his cheeks to his hands, where he laced their fingers together. Chibita...he was a very loving boyfriend, he always played with Karamatsu’s hair, let Karamatsu rest his head on his stomach, he occasionally peppered kisses all over the Matsuno's face, and he always always reminded the second born that he didn’t have to change himself to be loved, that he was perfect the way he was and it was okay to cry, it was okay for Karamatsu to be his crybaby emotional self. It was okay to fall apart, because Chibita would be here to help him pick himself back up, and he would give him that little push he needed. “Theirs are more...walnut-y. Yours are more...uh...brighter…? ‘M not good at this…W-what I’m trying to say is! Your eyes are my favourite kind of brown.”

And at times like these, he didn’t even wait for Karamatsu to crack completely; he was already patching him back together with clumsy words and clumsier compliments and Karamatsu loved all of it. He loved all of Chibita. He took it all in, his voice, the soft wrinkles between his eyebrows where the beginnings of a frown were present, the warmth of his hands in his, his rough skin, his bright blue eyes that were beaming from affection and love. The eyes that saw him as Karamatsu, and not as another one of the Matsunos.

God. He has never been so in love before.

“C-Chibita…”

“Oh my God you’re crying again?!”

“Chibitaaaa!”

“Ugh! Just hug me already you bastard!”
