Work Text:
It was the last week of January. Those living in Vörå had been given plenty of snow right around Christmas and it hadn't melted even once. To some this was a blessing, some others saw the cold weather as a curse. Tommy and Määnin belonged in the former group, at least most of the time they did. That Thursday afternoon Tommy walked into their living room and moved past Määnin on his way to the window. It had snowed some more around noon, but now the sky was still. Filled with clouds full of snow, but calm.
A tiny grin adorned Tommy's face as he turned to look at his best friend.
"Määnin,"
he announced, clasping his hands together. The man sitting on the couch looked up at him, tilting his head expectantly. Tommy, of course, didn't keep him waiting and guessing for long.
"We're going to build a snowman. The toughest snowman in Vörå."
Määnin cocked an eyebrow behind his trademark shades.
"We are?"
he asked, although the answer to his question was already loud and clear on Tommy's face.
"Fyrbanna, we are. And once were done, no one will ever have seen a cooler snowman than ours! Come on, Mään, let's go."
Tommy's excitement, no matter how poorly thought-out his plan may be, was contagious. And so, Määnin gave up his comfortable spot on the couch and followed his friend. They quickly put on their usual footwear (inappropriate for the weather) and grabbed some gloves which they finished putting on as they were already on their way outside. They could have been more prepared to tackle the winter chill.
Tommy wasted no time and scooped up some snow which he firmly formed into a ball. Then he started rolling it around across the apartment building's courtyard, watching in satisfaction how it slowly but surely grew in size as it picked up more snow. Tommy, surprisingly, wasn't keeping an eye on Määnin but believed him to be working on the snowman project as well. And sure enough, he was, in fact, making some snowballs. Little ones, and a lot of them. Because, while Tommy's idea about building a snowman together sounded fun, it was currently the last thing in his mind.
He couldn't resist stealing a few long glances at Tommy's ass whenever he walked past Määnin, either. Tommy wore his usual double denim getup, of course. And as always, he looked damn good in those jeans. They hugged his thighs so tightly. Almost too tightly, according to some who didn't know anything. But to Määnin the view was only tempting and delicious.
"Are you staring at my ass again, Mään?"
Tommy called out when he walked by Määnin once more.
"No, I wouldn't dream of it. I haven't looked at you even once this whole time. I've just been making snowballs,"
Määnin responded with a sleazy smile.
"Right.."
Tommy noted with a bubbling laughter; Määnin's favorite sound in the world. Or the second favorite, perhaps. Just hearing Tommy talk was worth of the first place.
Tommy's snowball, which was to be the lowest third of the snowman's body, had grown considerably in almost no time at all. He was just about to call out to Määnin that he could soon do with the second snowball which they would of course, in order to place it down safely, lift up together. But just then something hit the back of Tommy's neck, causing him to yelp in surprise. The cold, wet snow immediately got under Tommy's shirt, beginning to melt there.
"Very funny, Mään,"
Tommy commented as he tried to shake off the melting snow.. and failing to do so.
"I thought you were going to help me. Because if you've got a snowball ready at hand, I could use it over here so we can—"
Another snowball flew through the air and landed with an almost scary precision in the back of Tommy's head, knocking off his cap in the process.
"Aj, satan fyrbanna.. Määnin!"
Tommy yelled as he picked his hat back up and put it on. As he turned around, he saw Määnin sitting on the wooden bench someone had dragged away from the side of the apartment building. He seemed to be having a really good time, seeing how he was laughing. Tommy breathed out through his nose before he carried on talking.
"You know, when I asked for a snowball, that's not what I meant. So, now.. If you're done fucking around, I could really use some help so this doesn't take all day. Just don't make me beg because.."
Yet another snowball came at him like a projectile, hitting him in the chest.
"Okay.. Okay. Alright, fine! You want a snowball fight? I'll give you one!"
Tommy yelled, feeling like he had already given enough warnings.
He started backing away while keeping his eyes on Määnin. However, he did have to avert his gaze after reaching some still untouched snow. As he crouched down to make some snowballs of his own, Määnin left his spot on the bench and ran to hide behind one of the parked cars. From there he threw another snowball at Tommy but missed as his target just moved.
"Ready or not, Mään, here I come.. There's only one rule to this snowball fight. And that rule is.. No rules!"
Tommy jumped forward and started advancing towards Määnin's hiding place, carrying snowballs in both hands.
What followed, soon turned into a proper snowball war. And all of the courtyard was their battlefield. There were a lot of missed shots as they chased each other mercilessly, but quite a few of the snowballs also landed. As a result, both of them were soaked well within the first half an hour. Still, neither of them seemed to want a truce just yet.
After Tommy once again ran out of snowballs, he decided to take a risk and quickly make some more, using a grey Toyota as cover. Everything around him was quiet.. Way too quiet.
"Don't even think about surprising me.."
he mumbled under his breath and looked over his shoulder.
For the next minute or so, Tommy kept his position and peeked over the hood of the car in his search for Määnin. And the moment he finally caught a glimpse of the familiar denim, he threw a snowball in the general direction of his target and then stood up, rounding the car and meaning to engage in the chase once more. But after leaving the car behind him, Tommy stepped on a patch of ice having been revealed during their snowball fight. He couldn't quite regain his balance and fell on his back in a snowbank, the snowballs he'd been carrying landing somewhere near him.
Määnin had expected for Tommy to be making a run for him. After all, he had announced this quite obviously, whether he understood it himself or not. And Tommy always let Määnin know when he was coming. But instead of being pounced by Tommy, Määnin saw him lying on his back, the blue denim contrasting nicely against the pure white snow. Tommy wasn't moving. Määnin did consider the possibility of this being a trap, but Tommy's unmoving state was a big enough cause for concern.
"Toms? Are you alive?"
Määnin asked as he inched closer.
"Mmh.."
the fallen man groaned and made the half-assed effort to reach for one of the snowballs he'd dropped. But he soon gave up when he failed to reach any of them.
"You're not hurt, are you?"
A quiet shake of head. And then, a whisper:
"Just my pride.."
"Can you get up?"
Määnin kept asking questions.
"I guess,"
Tommy mumbled and finally opened his eyes, seeing Määnin hover above him. Still, he made no effort to actually get up despite already feeling very uncomfortable.
Määnin smirked as the initial concern begun to melt away. And when Tommy still didn't move even after some waiting, Määnin decided to take a different approach. As Tommy watched, studying Määnin's every move, he got down on his knees in the snow, his legs spread on both sides of Tommy, rubbing against his thighs almost teasingly.
"What are you doing?"
Tommy breathed out, voice tight and anticipating. Määnin didn't respond, at least not with words. Instead, he leaned even closer to Tommy's face until their lips brushed softly. And Tommy, he didn't even show any signs of hesitation, he just eased into the kiss right away, finally moving his arms, wrapping them around Määnin and numbly groping his back.
And as much as Tommy would have loved to keep making out right there, surrounded by snow as far as eye could see, he felt the cold bite right through his clothes, making him shiver.
"Mään.."
he breathed out, hand now caressing Määnin's cheek.
"Help me up before I get stuck here. I can't feel my.. anything."
Määnin frowned before getting up on his feet, snow crunching under his boots. He wasted no time in reaching out to take Tommy's hand and pulling him back on his feet. Even more shivers ran down Tommy's spine as they quickly turned around and started heading towards the apartment building.
The snowman was left unfinished and waiting for someone else to carry on with the task if they so pleased. Tommy and Määnin wordlessly settled on a truce after the snowball fight and scrambled straight for the elevator, getting in the moment the door was pulled open. Their cheeks were bright red and both of them needed to get warmed up, Tommy especially. He had the keys but his fingers felt so frozen that Määnin had to take care of opening the door to their apartment. They kicked off their shoes right after the door was closed behind them. From there they almost ran to the bathroom where they started taking off their cold, wet clothes, letting them fall on the floor in one pile.
"Määnin.."
Tommy almost whimpered and got Määnin's attention without needing to say anything else. He gestured at himself, and Määnin seemed to understand as he approached Tommy and helped with the button and zipper of his jeans because his fingers were still stiff and ice-cold when Määnin touched them. After lending a hand to Tommy, Määnin left him to squirm out of his jeans and went to turn on the shower.
"G-goddamn pins and needles, Mään.. Let me get under th-the shower n-now."
Tommy's teeth were chattering.
"Come here, Toms. We can both fit in here together,"
Määnin invited from under the shower. He didn't need to tell Tommy twice as he got company almost immediately. Määnin stepped aside, making sure that Tommy stood directly under the showerhead because he was the one that was in more urgent need of warming up. Tommy closed his eyes when he felt Määnin's arms being placed around his waist. He trembled under the touch as the warm water washed over them both.
"You feel any better, Toms..?"
Määnin murmured when he after a while moved his hand up Tommy's body and ran his fingers through the short, wet hair.
"N-no.. I'm so fucking cold.."
Tommy was just about able to say as he opened his eyes and rested his head on Määnin's shoulder. The combination of the warm water and Määnin's calming touch had an almost drowsy effect on him.
After standing under the shower for probably way too long, Tommy forced himself to turn off the water and step out, wrapping himself in a towel as quickly as possible. He had just gotten comfortable and would have preferred to stay under the warm water all day, but knew that it wasn't possible. Or wise. But then again, he didn't have all Moomins in the valley most of the time. Still, he dried himself off and then put on some warm, dry clothes.
As soon as both of them were ready, they went to the living room. There they got on the couch together, under the same blanket. Tommy pressed himself as close to Määnin as physically possible, having forgotten about the stupid snowman a long ago. And he'd never talk about it being his idea, ever again. He was perfectly happy right there, cuddled next to Määnin.
