Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Kagami bolted upright, cold sweat glistened off her and she threw the blanket off her with a dramatic flourish. She sat there in the darkness of her room with an unsettling realisation.

"We're not moving forward at all!" She yelled out into the darkness of her room.

She had spent the day rather pleasantly, and somewhat quite predictably, with Konata. They had met up around noon. Visited the new café Kagami had read about in a magazine, enjoyed some nice lunch while listening to Konata's ramblings about the new anime. She'd snapped some cute pictures of the cakes they had and tried not to think too hard about the calories. Then it was off to the cinema where they argued in that way that two lovers can only do, or at least Kagami liked to think. Really it was always a discussion between watching the new anime flick or something a bit more cultured. In their younger days Kagami would relent to Konata's wishes fairly often but now that they were older. And now she was slightly more concerned at the media Konata was indulging in; and with the hope that the romantic films she opted for would maybe finally lubricate the wheels on their situationship.

Today was not one of those days.

Despite their years of interaction Kagami was still susceptible to Konata's cuteness. Besides she was really keen to watch whatever movie it was. It can't hurt to indulge her every now and then right?

'Oh yeah, it does. That's why I'm up agonising over this'

Kagami reached for the glass of water by her nightstand and gulped it down then took a deep breath. She opened the curtains slightly and looked longingly at the stars up above. They had held hands while walking around and cuddled as close as they could in the movie seats without doing anything that could get them kicked out; but it still felt that their wheels were spinning. Hand holding and cuddling were usually what couples did but they weren't entirely outside the realm of what friends did either.
Realising she wasn't getting back to sleep anytime soon Kagami swung her legs out of bed and headed to the kitchen. Luckily it was a Saturday night, well technically Sunday morning by the reading of the clock on the oven in her kitchen as she stumbled through. She glanced around and saw Konata everywhere. Clothes strewn around, manga and games left behind, pictures, concert tickets, the list was endless.

Kagami did wonder what would happen if she asked what they were point blank but she knew it would do no good. Konata for all her foibles, was expert at dominating the conversations she was a part of. If she didn't want to answer you weren't getting one. The signs were there, they spent all their time together. Birthdays and Christmas were usually reserved for one another. Would it kill her to give her a kiss and end her agony over this 15 year 'will they, won't they'??

Kagami opened the fridge and cracked open a beer. The cold, delicious, malty tang of alcohol was just what she needed. She drained the first can and went for a second immediately. Sitting down on the couch she began strategizing.
'What date can I plan that would leave absolutely no doubt in her mind that we're actually together?" The usual date suspects flashed in her mind but she needed to be subtler than this. It needed to be something romantic and something that Konata would actively participate in.

World hunger would be easier to solve.

She took another swig of alcohol and opened her phone.
'Date ideas for otaku' she searched.
And immediately regretted. Forgetting what they were and how they perceived romance.

Still Kagami persevered, determined to finally get their relationship over the finish line. Or off the mark. Or was it more like a triathlon? Kagami sighed and cracked open a third beer, her brain was dissolving into mush. The onslaught of thoughts, lack of sleep and alcohol knocking her reasoning for six. She'd spent a great dal more time than she'd like to have scrolling through the slop hoping, pleading that there would be some golden chance. Even a silver or bronze chance; hell she'd take anything that was just short of devolving into an otaku herself at this point.
Half asleep and the other half drunk, her tired eyes finally spotted something.

'I've got you now Konata!'
