Chapter Text
The chase didn't last long. It almost never did. He looked down at their slumped body, retracting a bloodied and thorny tentacle from their corpse. Dull, teary eyes, head fallen to the side, the fresh scratches on their arms... the huge gaping hole in their chest. He blinked. He glanced down at his clawed hands, seeing their blood and skin caked under his nails. It used to be a disheartening sight, even if every fiber of his being wanted to tear them apart. They used to be his one and only. The person he dreamed of and would have done anything or given anything just to see smile. But, he had torn them to shreds so many times.. ripped their tail off, crumpled their false wings, used their dagger on them. It felt so normal and dull. He didn’t feel much when he looked at their body now. There was no satisfaction, discomfort, or worry. The lingering fear he always felt seemed to fade too. They couldn't do anything to him in this state. He was finally safe. Thinking for a moment, he moved to sit beside them. He peered at their hollowed eyes, before turning his head up to the sky. A barren sea of darkness. Even the stars couldn't reach out to a place like this.. He leaned against their cold form, his hand moving to hover over theirs. The two of them used to do this all the time. Sneak away from all their duties and fall against each other under the clouds. It felt like such a long time ago now, like a story he'd heard about two different people. A different lifetime. He'd loved them so much. He'd placed all of himself into their love. He'd supported them at every point. He'd done everything right, the best he could do. Even to his own detriment. So why.. ... He remembered hearing about marriage as a young boy. An eternal, indestructible bond sealed by the blessed thread of the Spawn himself. Was this how it felt? They were fated to meet again and again, through life and death, through love and hate. They would always be together. He leaned his head against their shoulder, closing his eyes. At least, they would always be together. It was what he'd dreamed back then.It didn’t feel as magical as he thought it’d be.He curled his hand around theirs. They were so cold.
