Work Text:
Sonic’s hand slowly dragged up Shadow’s arm, fingers threading gently through his fur.
They were curled together in a heap of blankets, bedding tangled around their legs. The lights were off, the only lighting coming from the window to the right of their bed.
The atmosphere was cozy and soft, and Sonic sighed happily, hand slipping over Shadow’s shoulder.
The agent rarely let these kinds of things happen. He was constantly working, which meant he’d rather spend his time with Sonic taking him to nice restaurants, treating the blue hero every other weekend to an expensive meal. Sonic felt guilty for the expense, but Shadow insisted, and the charges barely made a dent in the income G.U.N provided him.
’Why not spend it in a way I want to?’ Was what Shadow would always say, feigning offense when Sonic asked if it was completely necessary.
And don’t het him wrong, Sonic loved those dinners with Shadow. He wouldn’t trade anything in the world for Shadow’s dinner dates. It was endearing how serious the agent took them, and Sonic wasn’t the kind of partner to shit on his boyfriend’s preferences.
But…that being said, Sonic did like a change in routine every now and then.
Which was why whenever Shadow got a free work day off, or before Shadow could make a reservation, Sonic would propose his own date idea.
And Shadow also wasn’t the kind of partner to shit on his boyfriend’s preferences, so he always listened until Sonic was done, and then happily agreed.
Today, however, when Sonic had said the words “cuddle pile”, Shadow had grimaced.
”What?” Sonic had asked, ear flicking back uncertainly. “Don’t pretend you aren’t touch starved as fuck, it’s clear as day. You gotta admit a cuddle pile would be fun.”
Shadow’s muzzle was wrinkled, his eyes narrowed. “I just think maybe we could find a better way to spend our time.”
“No way, c’mon,” Sonic whined, draping himself across Shadow on the couch. “Just for, like, an hour and a half?”
Shadow sighed. “Fine. An hour and a half.”
Two hours later, they were still huddled together, Shadow’s breathing even and deep. Occasionally a soft, clicky purr would rise from the agent’s chest, and Sonic would smile to himself and hold him closer.
Late afternoon sunlight was pouring through the windows, illuminating their quills softly.
As Sonic’s hand slowly traveled down Shadow’s side, following the slope of his muscle, Shadow twitched, involuntarily moving away from the contact.
Sonic blinked as he rolled onto his stomach and stretched, his quills flaring slightly.
“What was that about?” Sonic asked, slightly hurt.
Shadow cracked an eye open, peering over at him.
“What was what about?” His voice was gravely and low.
”You just avoiding my loving caresses, that’s what,” Sonic accused
Shadow’s quills slowly flattened out again. “I was doing no such thing.”
Sonic frowned at him, reaching towards Shadow again, his fingers grazing his ribs. Shadow shrank back slightly, and Sonic pointed indignantly.
”See? There!”
Shadow made a face. “You’re so nit picky,”
Sonic reached over again, pulling Shadow towards himself, and Shadow bared his teeth. “Hey!”
Sonic ignored his protests as he ran his hands up Shadow’s sides experimentally, and was immediately blessed with the sound of a startled yelp teetering on the edge of a laugh.
Elation sparked in Sonic’s chest, and his face lit up.
”Oh chaos, Shads, are you ticklish?”
”N-No,” Shadow snapped, trying to wriggle out of Sonic’s grasp. “Absolutely not.”
”You are!” Sonic cried, over joyed as he swept his hand across Shadow’s side and was again rewarded with a sharp laugh.
He grabbed Shadow’s wrist, shoving it above his head as his fingers skated across his under arm, and another giggle broke out of Shadow.
”This is the best discovery I’ve made about you by far,” He cheered.
His hand traveled down to Shadow’s stomach, where his fingers danced across his ribs, and in seconds Shadow was falling apart, laughing as his head fell back against the sheets.
Sonic laughed along with him, heart blooming as he got sounds out of Shadow he never thought he’d hear before.
Shadow’s eyes were shut, fangs glinting as he cackled. His ears were angled out, and a deep blush colored his face. His legs tightened around Sonic’s hips, heels digging into the blankets as he kicked.
”Oh my god, Shadow you’re gorgeous,” Sonic cried breathlessly, slowly stopping his attack.
Shadow panted beneath him, eyes still closed. His chest rose and fell sporadically, and he let out a finally breathy laugh.
Affection gripped Sonic like a thousand pound truck.
He leaned over him, burying his muzzle in the crook of Shadow’s neck. The agent’s breath caught with surprise as Sonic’s arms wound around him, his eyes snapping open.
He paused, then carefully hugged him back, his nose brushing his ear.
”You’re insanely impulsive,” Shadow murmured, and Sonic giggled into his neck, tail flicking happily.
”I love you,” he whispered, voice muffled in Shadow’s fur.
”I love you too,”
Shadow rolled his eyes as Sonic sat up, a huge grin stretched across his face.
”You never told me you were ticklish,”
”I wonder why,” Shadow remarked dryly.
”Well,” Sonic said, pressing their noses together, “for what it counts, I think your laugh is beautiful. You should smile more often.”
Shadow huffed, fingers brushing Sonic’s wagging tail.
”I hate it,”
Sonic frowned down at him. “Your laugh?”
Shadow nodded.
“What! Why? It’s amazing.”
”I hate how it looks.” Shadow admitted, rubbing his muzzle with one hand, “It’s weird.”
”Shut up, no it’s not,” Sonic argued, wars flicking back. “How dare you?”
Shadow sighed, hand settling back down on Sonic’s hip.
Sonic watched him for a moment.
”Stop beating yourself down,” He whispered softly. He reached for Shadow’s face, pinching his cheek.
“Not okay. Love yourself, you fuck ass.”
That made Shadow laugh again, pulling Sonic down to kiss him. When they parted, he met Sonic’s eyes again.
“I do. And I love you,”
”Aww, you sap,” Sonic cooed, smiling down at his partner.
Shadow groaned, pulling Sonic back down into a hug and rolling them over into the blankets as the blue hero barked a surprised laugh.
”That’s enough feelings,” Shadow declared, pulling a blanket over their heads. “I’m going back to sleep.”
Sonic giggled, wrapping his arms around the agent as he closed his eyes, burrowing into his neck.
They slept until dark it grew dark, then stayed up late, watching shows and talking.
Sonic was pretty satisfied with the progress he’d made, and his amazing new discovery.
He was definitely going to abuse this knowledge in the foreseeable future.
