More than a Dream, Less than a Memory

Summary:

When Tails finds himself swapping bodies with a mysterious hedgehog he has never met, he'll get roped into a government conspiracy bigger that what he expected.

Aka:
Tails and Shadow body swap. Post Knuckles series pre Sonic 3.

Chapter 1

Notes:

The major character death isn't for a while, but since I know it is coming I decided to tag it now.

Chapters one and two are heavily inspired by Your Name, but after that they will probably diverge a lot and be completely their own (with the exception of one later scene that as of now I'm planning to have be inspired by the movie).

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

The sun shined in through the skylight, filling the attic with a warm glow. Tails laid in bed before jolting awake. He sat up in bed, looking around at the attic. His bed was in the middle of two empty ones. In the middle of the room were three bean bag chairs with various items scattered around them. Against the adjacent wall was a desk with a lamp, notebook, and various drawing utensils. Tails' tails flicked up, causing him to look at them.

The attic door flung open as Sonic quickly popped up and into the room.

"Bro? What are you doing?"

Tails had his tails in his hands, looking at them and running his fingers through them. At Sonic's question, he looked over with a confused expression.

"Bro? Me?"

"Are you still asleep? Breakfast is ready. Maddie made pancakes!" Sonic quickly made his exit, leaving Tails alone once more.

"Good morning!" Tails smiled as he got himself some cereal and took a seat at the table next to Sonic and Knuckles.

"You seem back to your normal cheery self."

"Huh?" Tails looked over to Knuckles, confused by the comment.

"Yeah, you were really weird yesterday." Sonic thought so too?

"What do you mean?" Tails thought about it, trying to figure out what they meant. What had he done yesterday?

"It was like you had amnesia. You didn't even seem to recognize your own name."

"Really?"

"Yeah, and you were a lot less bubbly than normal."

Tails thought about what he had been told as he ate his breakfast. No way they were messing with him, but it still didn't sit right. Once Knuckles was finished, he gracefully got up and spoke.

"I'm off to Wade's to train with him."

Tails shot up much less gracefully, knocking his chair over in the process.

"I'm coming too! Wade said I could take apart his equipment as long as I put it back together."

Tails brushed his teeth and fur before going to the attic to grab his things while Knuckles finished getting ready.

By the desk laid his backpack and on the table was his notebook and drafting supplies. Tails shoved them into his backpack before running downstairs to meet back up with Knuckles.

"Ready!"

"Let's be on our way, then."

Knuckles and Tails walked through Green Hills to Wade's place. It was a nice day with minimal clouds in the sky. Tails and Knuckles had always been free to roam Green Hills and the surrounding area, but Sonic had told them stories about back when he had to stay out of sight. It made Tails appreciate the situation he was in, being able to know the community would except him despite being a mutant alien. Back where he came from he, despite not being an alien there, was still not accepted. It's part of what made Green Hills truely feel like a home.

"Hello, Wade."

"Hey, Wade!"

"Hey Knux! Hey Tails! You seem back to normal today."

"You too? What did I even do?" Tails really couldn't recall. It was like the entire previous day have been one long dream.

"You seemed possessed yesterday."

"Possessed?"

"The way you spoke, the way you moved, the stuff you did and didn't remember."

"You know, now that I think about it, I've been having weird dreams recently. Like of someone else's life...?"

"Weird... Anyways, the equipment is on the bench in the garage if you want to mess with it."

"Ok, thank you!" Tails went into the garage, pulling out his items from his backpack. He opened his notebook to the most recent page to make notes on the parts of what he planned to disassemble before noticing something written.

Who are you?

Huh?

Notes:

I had a lot of fun playing with the perspective of the 1st section to paint a vivid image without spoiling or lying.
