Christmas in the Boling Isles

Notes:

I am pretty sure a fanfic with a similar premise already exists, just because of probability, but I still wanted to write this. Happy holidays, friends.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Luz sighed next to the window, watching the boiling rain. A little paw pulled her out of her thoughts by pulling her ankle.

“Luz!” King called her. “Luz! What's wrong?”

“¿Oh? Eh, nothing, nothing.”

King insisted, because he was right, something was wrong for Luz, and he guessed easily: she missed her home. She had had to destroy the portal and was stranded, when she should have already come back at that point. To “summer camp”, that thing no one in that house understood fully.

“Let's do something!” he tried to cheer her up. “Do you want to draw? Watch cartoons on your human device?”

“We won't be able to see many cartoons in my phone,” Luz replied. “I don't have Internet anymore, so we only have the shorts and scenes I downloaded, and we have watched those a lot already...”

“What if we throw a party?”

Luz opened her eyes.

“A party,” she repeated. “¿Qué si...? King, it must almost be Christmas in the Human Realm!”

“Chris what?”

“Christmas! It's a holiday humans have, the most popular of the year. What if we had a Christmas party?”

King had no idea what that would be like, but when Lux explained it was about giving gifts and eating candy, he felt excited.

Luz explained the idea to Eda, Lilith, Abel and Hooty too. She omitted the religious part of the holiday, since no one there would be interested in it and she wasn't either, and they began to prepare.

It was two weeks of planning, and by the end of the month they had a little Christmas party. Luz wondered if she would invite her friends, but she decided to save them for the following day, so the first party would be just for family.

Hooty had baked a lot of candy, and Lilith had to intervene so King and Abel wouldn't eat too many. They played the only “Christmas” song Luz's phone had (a carol that, being in Spanish, the others didn't understand), they talked and opened their presents under the tree.

This was the tree outside next to the cliff, since they didn't want to cut any tree in the forest. They had found more Christmas decorations than Luz expected in Eda's garbage, but most of them were old and a bit ugly. Some presents weren't wrapped, just in cardboard boxes, some so poorly they looked like they had an accident, and only the ones Abel and Lilith had wrapped were presentable.

They had agreed all except King would give each of them a gift, but the child had felt offended and demanded to do the same than the older people. Because of that, Luz got a a screw (which he had picked because “it was very pretty”) from him. From Eda she received batteries “for her phone”, and she didn't want to ruin the moment telling her they wouldn't be useful. Lilith gave her a book, of course, although a novel she said she read when she was her age. Abel gifted her a notebook to draw and a pencil set so good it must have been stolen, and Hooty a hug, because “the best present was him”, and he wasn't wrong.

They went back to the living room, where Abel and Lilith had sat together to read the book he had gifted his sister, and Eda explained to Hooty he couldn't eat the earrings she had been given.

Luz didn't feel like she was home, but she was closer.

“Do you feel better?” King asked her, wearing a scarf that was too big for him.

“Yes,” Luz replied. “There is just one thing left.”

She pulled all the light glyphs she had been preparing and activated them in the living room. They couldn't miss the Christmas lights.

Notes:

I've learned how to write dialogue the proper way in Spanish, and I am trying to do the same in English, but I am not used to the latter. If the dialogue style is odd, well, my former way to do it was strange as well, haha.
