Work Text:

It was a quaint day in Hobbiton. Bilbo Baggins had just sat down at his dining table, he had just finished making supper when the bell had been wrung. That was odd, he didn’t remember inviting anyone. Maybe they were lost.

He got up to check the door, and in his doorway there stood a dwarf. He came in and introduced himself as Dwalin. His quiet supper had quickly taken a turn for the worst as more dwarves came to his door.  There were 12 dwarves in his house now. They had raided his pantry and made a mess of the rest of the house. Of course it was all Gandalf’s idea to invite these heathens into his home! Then the bell rang out once more.

“He’s here.” Gandalf said.

It was completely silent as Gandalf got to the door. Once it opened he saw the most beautiful dwarf he’d ever had the pleasure of laying his eyes on. As Gandalf introduced him, he found out his name was Thorin, the king under the mountain. So… he’s way out of my league. He thought to himself then.

Thorin looked at him for a moment before speaking, “so… this is the hobbit.”

Bilbo’s heart fluttered a little, his voice was so deep and smooth.

As the night ended and he had fallen asleep, he had thought about Thorin and his quest.

Many days had soon passed after he had departed on this quest with Gandalf and Thorin’s dwarven company, that he had found himself in.  After the escape  on the eagles from the orcs in the misty mountains, he had found himself being hugged by Thorin.

“Did I not say that you would be a burden, that you would not survive in the wild, that you would have no place amongst us. I have never been more wrong in my life.” Thorin had said as he embraced him.

His heart began to pick up speed as they hugged. The other dwarves looked at them and then each other while Gandalf looked smugly satisfied. When the hug ended the warmth lingered with him. He silently hoped it would happen more.

Many months had gone by at this point and Smaug had been slain, that Bilbo and Thorin had explored their feelings. Thorin had placed his unwavering trust in Bilbo, never doubting his allegiance, even when doubting his own kin. It was certainly odd. He didn’t like how Thorin had changed because of the blasted dragon sickness, but nothing would cause his love to cease. However if getting the arkenstone away from Thorin would help him, then that is what he would do. He would take whatever punishment would come his way.

As he made his escape from the mountain to meet with Bard and Thranduil, he kept thinking about Thorin and hopefully after all this dragon madness nonsense was done he would be back to normal. The thought filled him with joy and kept him going even when he was nervous.

He had delivered the arkenstone to Bard and made his way back into the mountain like nothing had happened, and soon fell asleep.

The next day he was given a beautiful chain mail, called mithril. It would turn out to be the second most valuable thing in the mountain, which made the gift feel incredibly special, and he supposed it was. He felt very loved in that moment especially even though they were gearing up for a war against men and elves and were severely outnumbered.

As it would turn out they weren’t quite as outnumbered as he had thought, as Thorin’s cousin Dain had arrived astride his boar with his army from the iron hills. Soon after he revealed he had given the arkenstone to Bard was he cast out. It had stung more than any wound he had received this journey, but he understood well enough the anger and betrayal that Thorin felt. The rest of the company helped him down and he ran to stand by Gandalf. He had told Gandalf of his feelings about Thorin and why he had given Bard the arkenstone. He knew Gandalf had known all along, but he was a comfort during this time.

The battle had soon begun, and not long after, the orcs had shown their ugly faces as well. However Thorin and the rest of the company had emerged from the mountain, and Thorin had once again been himself, no longer driven mad. Thorin, Fili, and Kili made their way to Ravenhill. Not long after, Bilbo and Gandalf had made their way up there as well. He saw Thorin fighting Azog, and watched him float down under the ice, Bilbo called Thorin over and he quickly ran over to him. Azog then jumped out of the ice behind Thorin causing him to turn back around and continue to fight.

They fought brutally on the ice, yet by some miracle, Thorin emerged victorious.

“Thorin!” Bilbo shouted as he ran over to him.

“You did it! Azog is slain!” He yelled running into a tight hug.

“Master Baggins, I’m sorry. I would never have treated you in such a manner had I been in my right mind.” Thorin embraced Bilbo tighter, not wanting to let go of him.

That was the moment Bilbo decided to take it to the next step. He pulled Thorin down to his eye level and kissed him hard. It was inexperienced and harsh, but fitting for the situation. Bilbo then released Thorin feeling a little guilty.

“Forgive me if this is out of my depth, but I would follow you to the ends of the earth, I would never betray you had it not been with the best of intentions. I wished only to help you.”

“Bilbo, I do not blame you for your actions, I thank you for them. I cannot imagine what I would’ve fallen into had it not been for your intervention. I trust no one more than I trust you, Master Baggins.”

Thorin kissed him this time, gentle and cautious. Bilbo’s head was spinning and his heart was beating out of his chest. They kissed longer than before, and only released once they were both out of breath.

“Thorin, I believe you have people awaiting.” Gandalf helpfully interjected, the battle was not yet over.

The three of them met up with Fili and Kili at the base of Ravenhill only to see that the fighting had in fact ceased. Bard was busy with the men of laketown, and figuring out how they would fare over the winter. Thranduil had approached offering to help, but only if they could do business once more.

The rest of the dwarves waiting near the entrance to the mountain.

“Master Baggins! Thorin! You’ve returned alive!” Balin yelled.

Bilbo let a big smile onto his face for the first time in what seemed like days. Everything had changed, but that’s okay. It was back to being good, they had the mountain, they had each other.

They agreed the gold was all but cursed and so some stayed at the mountain to help rebuild dale, and Fili and Kili were to rule under the mountain together, however they had melted down most of the gold to send off charitably, either to dale or other members of their kin in need.

Thorin had decided he was going to go back with Bilbo, he had been king and saw the mountain as a reminder of the sickness he suffered. Besides, his heart was with Bilbo anyway, where Bilbo went, he too would go.

Epilogue!!!!

Thorin sat in his arm chair across from Bilbo in their living room reading a book. They enjoyed these quiet days, the domesticity of it all was calming for the two of them. However they were often ruined by their nephew Frodo. Thorin never thought he’d have anything like a son, but Frodo was theirs now. Basically their son, he was so happy. He loved his family very much.

“Uncle Thorin Uncle Thorin look!” Frodo held out a gold coin.

“Someone dropped it in the woods, I couldn’t find anyone who it might belong to so I decided to bring it back to give to you!” Bless Frodo’s sweet soul the boy was only 8, and yet Bilbo and Thorin found themselves with him after his parents' unfortunate deaths.

“Thank you, Frodo, I will treasure it greatly.” He smiled gently at the boy and took the coin from him. Gold didn’t mean much to him now, not when his family was worth more than all the gold in Erebor.
