from the dining table

Summary:

“Yoko, I don’t understand. What happened? I love her, and every day she seemed more distant, but I thought it would pass or that she would talk about it, but breaking up?” — In a rushed way, Enid continued — “Please, can you tell me… did she say anything to you? Was I being too much? What if she found someone else? Did Bianca mention anything? She must know, after all even in a very strange way Wendy is B.’s best friend. Besides, you know how she gets when she’s buried in writing a new book — she doesn’t eat, doesn’t drink, doesn’t sleep unless someone reminds her. What should I do—” She began to ramble, until her reasoning was cut off by the Asian girl.

“What if Wednesday broke up with Enid and shut down emotionally, and Enid couldn’t accept it and tried to understand what happened to the love of her life?”

Chapter 1: the end of our forever?

Chapter Text

POV Enid

The night was clear when it was all over.
The day it all began it was raining.

That seems wrong, right?

She left the house and I stayed, with the silence of a girl who doesn’t speak much, but her words that night cut like knives. The day we met was worse, she actually threw knives at me. My heart beat faster than usual, maybe it was the adrenaline, but I think it was love.

…………

The Sun invaded the apartment at dawn, before even opening her eyes the throbbing headache attacked the one with light hair like a strident bell. For a moment, burying her face in the pillow seemed like the best solution, until the reasons for her skull complaining so much came to light: the dried tears on her cheek, the cold room, and mainly, the empty bed.

At that moment it seemed that crying (tears that seemed never-ending) was her destiny for the whole afternoon, until she realized the time, 9:47 am said the clock - a clock with a classic style, dark and made of metal - it belonged to Wednesday, Enid’s idea was that they were useless (but now with her phone dead, after so much sad music, sending endless voice messages to Yoko and looking at old pictures, it seemed like a life jacket, the only problem being that the owner of the jacket was the one who threw her into the open sea). Her tear duct flooded again, refusing to spiral, Enid got up.

The moment her feet touched the cold floor, it was like an immediate reality check, when she left her cocoon of denial, she would be forced to continue life, confirm that it happened and see that the world did not stop with her heart.

Getting ready felt wrong: wearing her vibrant tones while the dark colors on the other side remained untouched. Having coffee with only one dish and only 20% of the coffee grounds felt equally wrong. Considering that the resident of the house who lived on caffeine was the writer. Enid felt thrown into a dystopia with no ties to her home, how to survive alone? Now it seemed impossible.

Eventually Yoko called, the barricade that held her up collapsed when her friend gave her the chance to say what she had been thinking.

“Tell me, little wolf, how are you feeling?” - Yoko said calmly - “I know it must be hard, but it was her decision, you can’t blame yourself for this, do you understand? I really don’t know why Addams did this, but it’s something only she has to deal with, have you left the house yet? Do you need anything?”

“Yoko, I don’t understand. What happened? I love her, and every day she seemed more distant, but I thought it would pass or that she would talk about it, but breaking up?” - In a rushed way, Enid continued - “Please, can you tell me… did she say anything to you? Was I being too much? What if she found someone else? Did Bianca mention anything? She must know, after all even in her very strange way Wendy is B.’s best friend. Besides, you know how she gets when she’s buried in writing a new book - she doesn’t eat, drink, or sleep unless someone reminds her. What should I ” Her reasoning was cut short by the Asian woman.

“Enid” - Yoko paused, noticing she had reached the station - “You know I love you, but you have to breathe. Addams is an adult, she knows how to take care of herself. I don’t know why she… left you, but how about this, I’ll go to your house with Divina tonight and we can watch a movie, eat pizza and you cry and complain as much as you want, ok?” Yoko says on the other side of the call, a donut between her teeth while running to work.

“…Alright. I’ll wait for you,” murmurs Enid.

“Okay, baby. See you later.” Yoko hangs up.

…………

The day passed in a mixture of very slow and very fast, at times, the simple act of arranging the flowers seemed exhausting, other times she blinked and it seemed two hours had passed. When the Sun finally began to set, Enid started packing her bag and closing the flower shop with her boss, Isadora Capri.

“You know” - begins the redhead, sounding almost uninterested - “I may not be one of your friends, but I know how to notice when something is wrong.” -Turning to Enid, she continues - “Nid, you need to talk? What’s going on in that head of yours today? You spent the whole day in another world.”

“It’s just…” - Enid sighs - “My girlfriend broke up with me yesterday, and I feel stupid because I can’t resent her.” - She turns to the taller woman, her eyes showing everything her brain thinks and her mouth doesn’t say - “I know her, I can tell when something is wrong, and yesterday, she wasn’t okay” - Enid stops, seeming to think for a moment - “actually, she hasn’t been okay for a while, I was just refusing to accept it.”

Capri shifts the bag on her shoulder, then says - “I think sometimes for us to fully understand ourselves, it’s necessary to know who we are without our support.” - She turns the key in the door behind her - “I don’t think your story ended there, but it’s going to take effort to continue.”

Enid stays still for a moment, absorbing Isadora’s words. Then she decides to go home.
