New Year, Old Us

Graduation was only a few months away. This was Class A’s last school break ever unless they ended up going to college or university, which Katsuki was actually considering, and for once, they weren't going to be interning the holidays away. He and the Vice Rep had a little over two weeks of freedom to check items off their bucket lists.

They had gotten together after, mostly, recovering from the war and now they had been together for roughly a year. This was going to be their anniversary trip and they had plans. International type plans at that.

Seeing as they had barely survived this long and they weren't even full-fledged heroes yet, they understood that they might never actually get to do everything they have really been wanting to do, so they were going to spend their last guaranteed free time doing as much as they could. They had picked things that could work together from each of their lists and planned their vacation around those. It wasn't easy, but by the time they were free to go on Christmas Eve, Kats and Momo had everything worked out.

They had participated in the Class A Christmas party, left early, arrived at the airport with their prepacked luggage with plenty of time for check-in, and by dawn of the day before Christmas, they were already in Mezhdunarodnyy Airport getting cleared. Both of them had Russian heritage and wanted to experience that part of their culture and to see the aurora borealis that were predicted to be visible in the area over the coming week while Katsuki wanted to see Pamyatnik, the Mammoth Museum, and all the sculptures and art both in and out of the museums, Momo was looking forward to the history museum, the Kingdom of Permafrost, and the fence that was continuously being raised out of the ground more each year and it only had a few years before it was entirely ejected. The plan was to spend the majority of the week here before flying to Moscow for the remainder of the trip.

“I knew it was going to be fucking cold, but I didn't think about it being a dry cold. It's pulling my sweat off entirely. That can't be safe.”

“I believe it is just causing it to congeal as it is super cooled, locking in moisture from being stolen from your skin. It is fascinating.”

Well, that was comforting. At least he wasn't being an even bigger walking hazard than usual, but he recognized that look. Momo was gearing up for research and he wanted to go to the museum and they couldn't do both at the same time, sadly.

“You can investigate it later since it's not a hazard. We have a whole day of looking around, so it can wait until we are back at the hotel.”

She pouted, fully and intentionally, to try to change his mind, but he stood his ground. If they didn't do this now they probably wouldn't end up doing it at all, and that was the entire point of coming here. It was now or never and he wasn't going to let never be an option.

It was a good thing he insisted on that because when they got back to the hotel they end up staying put for the next two days, completely fascinated by how his sweat from various parts of his body reacted to the low temperatures. This ended up with them doing a deep dive into the makeup of his perspiration that let them gain a deeper understanding of its chemical makeup then they had ever understood before. They got it down so exactly that his kickass girlfriend was able to make some all on her own using her quirk. It was so goddamn hot to watch her use his quirk like that and caused them to miss even more time because they ended up finding a spot where they could test their wills against each other and then celebrate in their room as they warmed each other up.

That was what took up all of their time up until New Year's Eve where they ended up spending the whole eighteen hour night watching the lights in the sky dance and making out like they had been hit by some kind of kissing quirk. When the sun finally rose between 9:30 and 10:00, they went back to their room and shared a bath that was legitimately just for the warmth and nothing else because they were too cold to even try and it was too dangerous to take turns given they had been dumb enough to nearly get hypothermia, because they were sappy morons. The rest of New Year's day was spent sleeping like the dead before they had to fly to Moscow.

Honestly, they had completely forgotten to take pictures to send to prove that they were alive to their friends, so as soon as the holiday was over and everyone realized they hadn't heard from the pair, both were getting absolutely hounded for pictures. Pictures they didn't have and couldn't fake using stuff from online. They no sooner stepped off the plane in Eastern Russia, snow everywhere, than they snapped a few pictures of themselves with the architecture in the background to send, praying that nobody had paid enough attention to their agenda to know that they hadn't been in the city the entire time. Of course, considering that Glasses and the Nerd were involved, they were immediately called out in front of all the others in the group chat, which sucked.

They ended up sending a bunch of pictures throughout the city. All the big tourist attractions, pictures of food, goofing off in snow, snow sculptures, that kind of shit. They didn't explain that the reason no pictures were sent during that first week was because they had been a little distracted and hadn't bothered to take any. The others probably thought they had been ‘busy’ the whole time based on all of the winking face emojis he had been sent from his group of idiots, which wasn't entirely wrong, but what the hell did they think they were going to get by doing that shit?

They had a blast during those few hours, even if it was mostly for show. The place was fascinating, the sights were amazing, and the company was perfect. The cameras everywhere just made it feel like they were safely back on campus being constantly spied on by the Rat they had as a principal.

To be honest, this is exactly what the two of them had needed before they started hero work. They were able to understand more of what they were protecting. They weren't just saving people, they were keeping heritage safe for future generations. Sure, some of their heritage was here in another country, but they both had deep ties to Japan that they would never allow anything to happen to if they could help it.

He was definitely going to try to make sure they got to do something like this again. It didn't matter if it was just to knock a few items off of their bucket list, it was a time for them to just enjoy being real people with real interests interacting with people who didn't just look at them in awe and wonder. This was how they kept themselves human, kept themselves from getting too big of heads, had they kept the spark going. He and Momo wouldn't give up being a hero for anything, but he definitely wanted to make sure he had a little time to just be Katsuki and see that she got to be Momo, together or separately.

Maybe he should add it to whatever contract he ended up signing….
