Merlin was silent as he watched Arthur. Tears burned his eyes as he blinked them away. Arthur had grown so much since he came to Camelot, and some days, he wondered still what his part in Arthur’s life is.
A soft smile was thrown his way before Arthur turned back to the people.
The night dragged on as Merlin served Arthur just like normal. A tired smile on his face as he kept on the front, but still, he was grateful when the night ended, as he helped Arthur get ready for bed.
As Arthur settled, he grabbed Merlin’s hand, pulling him onto the bed. “What’s going on, Merls?” His voice was low. “You were sad the whole night.”
Merlin was silent as he played with Arthur’s hand. Finally letting the tears fall. “I don’t know where I fit into your life anymore. You have grown so much since I came here, and I guess I am just scared of being left behind.” Merlin tried to give Arthur a small smile, but it came out more as a grimace.
“You belong by my side. Merls. You were there for me the whole time. I won’t want you anywhere else.” He pulled Merlin onto his chest, as he pressed soft kisses against his head. “And soon people will know just how much you mean to me.”
“What do you mean, Arthur?” Merlin looked up, eyes curious.
“Marry me, Merls. I want you on my side for life.” Arthur gently traced Merlin’s face. “You are my best friend, the person I love.”
Merlin’s eyes light up. “Of course, I will marry you.” Merlin’s voice was low as Arthur pressed, another kiss against his face. “I love you, my king.”
“And I love you, Merls.” He settled, holding Merlin firmly against his chest.
