The Arcade Cabinet in the Closet

Summary:

Sun needs to get the Halloween decorations from the closet, but what is this arcade doing in there? And why are their noises coming from it when it isn't plugged in?

Notes:

Had so much fun writing this! Hope you enjoy sunshinehare! Happy Halloween everyone!

Work Text:

"Oh Moonie!” Sun called out across the daycare, “It's time to decorate for Halloween!”

“I know, Sunny. Just let me finish up the last bit of cleaning and I'll help you decorate.” Moon responds, grabbing a few cleaning supplies before moving over to the craft tables to tackle the mess.

“Alright! I'll go get the decorations out of storage! Be right back, Love!” Sun called, taking the wire out of the daycare and to the nearby storage closet. Opening the door, he found the organized closet packed with boxes, each labeled and placed with other boxes for each holiday. He moved to the back of the closet for the Halloween decoration boxes when he thought he heard something from the corner of the room.

“What was that? Who's there?” Sun called out.

Nothing made noise, but when Sun moved closer, he thought he saw a slight glow coming from underneath a sheet. Pulling it off he saw an old Balloon World arcade cabinet.

“Wonder why you're in here and not one of the arcades. Especially since this is the decorations storage, unless you are a decoration…?” Sun mumbles to himself.

Looking closer at the arcade machine he notices it isn't plugged in, though when he looks at the screen the high score screen is still flashing. "That's odd.” The sunny bot just shrugged it off and went to the rest of the Halloween decorations, beginning to pile some of the boxes to carry.

Just when he was about to pick up the stack of boxes there was a loud crash sound and maniacal laughing.

Sun jumped, dropping the boxes and spinning around towards the noise. He caught a glimpse of what looked like an arm disappearing into the screen of the arcade machine.

“Wh-whatever you a-are, plea-please just leave m-me alone!” Sun cried out at the machine. Sun stared at the arcade cabinet, waiting for something to happen, when nothing did for several minutes he turned around, muttering, “Must be work getting to me, I’m going crazy.”

Sun picked up the boxes and while he was leaving, he thought he heard more laughing, making him run out, nearly running into Moon.

“Woah, what’s wrong, Sunny?” Moon said, steadying Sun.

“There’s a ghost or something in the arcade cabinet!” Sun yelled.

Moon flinched away from how loud Sun was for a moment before the words processed. “An arcade cabinet? I didn’t know we had one of those in there. Is it a decoration or was someone dumb enough to put it in there?”

“Moon! Did you not hear me?! I think there is a ghost in it! I don’t care how it got in there!” Sun yells.

“Okay! Okay! Calm down, Sun! It's okay. You're probably just imagining it all. Work was tough today after all-” Moon tried calming Sun, only to be interrupted.

“I'm not imagining it! I know I heard it! I even saw a glimpse of it!” Sun exclaims.

“Okay! If it really is haunted, then we can go together, I'll keep you safe. Do you trust me on that?” Moon comforts.

Sun looks at Moon like he is crazy for a moment before slowly nodding. “Yes, I trust you, Moonie. I trust you with everything.”

Moon smiles softly, “Alright, then let's go.” he says, grabbing Sun's hand and pulling him along with back to the closet.

"How many boxes did you leave, when you came running out?” Moon asks, unsure how many decorations they have for Halloween.

“There should be about five more, I think.” Sun says, already growing in confidence with Moon by his side.

“Alright, I can take three, and you can have two, then, since you already brought out three.” Moon says, crossing the door frame into the closet before immediately feeling resistance from Sun, who didn't enter the closet with him, continuing to stand just outside, yet still holding Moon's hand. "Sun? Are you okay?”

Sun seems to suddenly flash back into reality before quickly answering, "Yeah, yeah. Just a bit nervous is all.” He stammers out.

"You don't have to come in; I can bring the boxes to you.” Moon suggests.

Sun shakes his head, "No. I need to get over this; I can't stay scared of the closet forever. There're so many holidays to decorate for and they're all in there.”

"Sunny, just take it slow. There's no rush. I really don't mind bringing the boxes to you. You can try again after you've relaxed and aren't still so wound up from work.” Moon insists.

"Moon, I can't let you do all the work. I can do this.” Sun says as he forces himself a little closer to the closet. When he begins toeing the line of the door frame, he takes a deep breath before shutting his eyes tight and takes the final step over and into the closet.

"There we go. Nothing bad is happening. You've got this, Sunny.” Moon encourages the solar bot who slowly opens his eyes to see a completely normal closet, just as it was before this all started.

Sun sighs out in relief, “Alight, let's get this over with.” He says, stepping forward with Moon to gather the decoration boxes.

When they get to the boxes, Moon crouches down to check the Halloween boxes. Sun nervously glances over at the arcade cabinet, only seeing the high score screen flashing across it.

Moon picks up a couple of boxes to hand to Sun, but just as he gets them a foot off the ground the one on the bottom busts open from the bottom. "Crap! Just what we needed. Sun, I'll be right back, I'm going to grab tape to patch this up, it would be great if you could gather what spilled.”

Sun looks over at Moon nervously, but puts on a smile, “Of course, my Love. Be quick.”

“I will, Sunny.” Moon says as he walks to the door heading over to the nearby desk to grab packing tape.

Sun bent down and began picking up the various decorations scattering the floor. While he had his back turned, he didn't see the face appearing in the arcade cabinet, it was like his own, but rather than a bright yellow, it had a black face with two sets of yellow and orange rays and a bright, glowing orange mouth and eyes.

The face began chuckling lowly while the being crept out of the screen, sneaking up on Sun, who was too focused on collecting decorations.

"Sunnnyyyy.” The being drawled out once right behind the sunny bot.

Sun spun around quickly, crying out in shock. "Wh-what are you?!”

The being just laughed at Sun's reaction.

"Sun? Are you okay in there?” Moon calls out while quickly walking back to the closet after hearing Sun cry out.

The being looked at the doorway before looking back at Sun with a manic grin and playfully holding a finger up in a shush motion over his mouth. Sun watched in horror as the being crept back to the arcade cabinet and crawled into the screen, disappearing.

Moon walked into the closet a moment after the being disappeared. "Sun? You didn't answer me, are you okay?”

“Oh, yea, I'm fine.” Sun said, glancing at the arcade cabinet, now knowing there truly was something within it. "Did you get the tape?”

“Oh, yeah, right here.” Moon says, passing the roll to Sun, who quickly fixed the box and dumped the decorations back inside.

Moon was slightly confused by how careless Sun was being when he was usually so organized but just chalked it up to wanting out of the closet. Moon grabbed his three boxes while Sun picked up his two. "Shall we be off then?” Moon joked while the pair began walking.

“Absolutely.” Sun says, not slowing down a moment until they get into the daycare and put the boxes down. Sun lets out a massive sigh and looks over the boxes, "Now just to decorate.”

Moon looks at his sunny counterpart fondly before looking over the daycare. "Shouldn't be too long.”
