Work Text:

The sky was pitch black, the city lights poisoning the sky and leaving not a single star visible. Coney Island, however, was alight with color. The Wonder Wheel, Luna 360, and (Yelena had chuckled at this one) the Thunderbolt, were all shining in the night with the lights adorning their structures flickering and illuminating the space. Jack-o'-lanterns warmed the area with an orange glow and the purple faux torches added a lovely touch, creating the classic Halloween colors combo.

Kate Bishop and Yelena were here for their annual spooky date. They had just gotten caramel apples and were now walking around the fair. Kate lifted her caramel apple to her lips, fingers holding tight to the sticky stick, but before she could take a bite her girlfriend chomped on it, causing the apple to bump into Kate's lips.

“Hey!” Kate chirped, glaring at her cheeky girlfriend.

Yelena smirked and kissed Kate, getting the leftover caramel on her lips. Kate licked it off, grumbling while Yelena chuckled.

Last year they had went to a gay bar for their spooky date night. It was one they often went to for date nights, loving the energy as well as the music and drinks there. What was different that night though, was that the drag show that was happening was scary themed. Many of the outfits were over the top and campy, leaving Kate and Yelena gasping for air at the sight. There was an especially hilarious costume of the hulk but with comically large vampire fangs and messy white makeup. There were a few though that were genuinely scary. The clown costumes… Kate still hadn’t fully recovered from that one.

The year before that they had stayed home and carved pumpkins together while watching the Alien movies. Yelena had made a shockingly good portrait of her and Kate, using a picture of them hiking together as reference. Kate had been embarrassed to turn her pumpkin around. Yelena had gasped and said she loved it when Kate finally showed off her Lucky pumpkin attempt. It didn’t really look like him, nose too big and an eye that looked much more dastardly than it was in real life. Yelena had immediately taken a picture and ran off. Kate was left sitting at the kitchen table, dumbfounded, until Yelena came back with a printed picture of the pumpkin. Kate almost cried when Yelena hung it up on their refrigerator. She was so lucky to have such a supportive girlfriend, even if it was support for her shitty pumpkin carving skills.

Their first ever spooky date had been very different from the other ones.  They had just started going steady and hadn’t made plans to do anything. They just so happened to go on a small mission together and wouldn’t stop flirting throughout the entirety of it. That was what originally started their tradition of wholesome date nights. Though recently they hadn’t been doing many missions. They wanted to put it on hold while they decided if they wanted to expand their family and what that would change. Unbeknownst to Kate, Yelena was waiting for their date to be over to tell her she was ready for “The Next Step” as the Americans say.

“Would you like to go on one of the rides?” Yelena asked, eyeing the rest of Kate's apple.

Kate rolled her eyes and let her girlfriend have another bite. She hummed.

“What about the Thunderbolt?”

Yelena smirked again. “Why ride that when you can ride the better one at home?”

Kate's face flushed and she pushed the blonde away from her. Yelena cackled and wrapped her arm around her girlfriend's. Kate huffed but leaned into the touch.

On their way to the ride, they passed a stack of hay with a skeleton pirate spray painted on it and Yelena fondly smiled when Kate pointed it out to her.

They boarded the Thunderbolt, not without Yelena's plethora of innuendos, and tightly clasped hands once they were secured and buckled.

The roller coaster started to climb the steep rail and Kate turned pink as she held her breath. Yelena ran her thumb over the back of Kate's hand and the brunette finally released her breath before promptly screaming when the roller coaster dropped over the high peak. Yelena's laughter harmonized with Kate's screams.

“Oh, you big baby.” Yelena poked as she carried her girlfriend on her back. Kate whimpered and shoved her face into the back of the blonde's hair. Kate's long legs had been too wobbly to walk after riding the Thunderbolt (“Like usual.” Yelena had joked and a flustered Kate slapped her.) so Yelena had to carry her.

“Think you can handle Dante's Inferno or would you like to head home?” Yelena asked, she nodded towards the haunted house ride. Kate's head hurt from screaming so much but she didn't want their date to end so soon so she shook her head.

“I can handle more.” She bit Yelena's shoulder before she could make yet another innuendo. Yelena yelped but smiled wide as she walked them towards the Inferno.

Yelena grinned up at the demon statue coming out of the building. Kate reached out, still on top of Yelena's back, and touched the giant red tongue that stuck out of the wall. The two smiled at one another and Yelena set Kate into the cart and sat down next to her. The blonde wrapped an arm around her girlfriend's shoulders and Kate rested her head on Yelena's. They screamed, laughed, and even poked fun at the poorly aged paint on the walls.

Now they were headed home, holding hands and admiring the Halloween themed decorations everywhere. The street lamps had scarecrows strapped to them, stores had paintings of zombies on their windows, and they even passed by a balloon tied to a sewer drain which got a good chuckle out of the two. Their own apartment was covered in the same spirit-y type of stuff, faux cobwebs hanging in corners, fake skeletons in small plastic cages, and they had a candy bowl ready by the front door for Halloween day.

Nothing was better than spending the holidays together. Kate and Yelena both had so much spirit that even St. Patrick's Day was fun and loaded with activities. It didn't matter what the holiday was. What really made it special was their time together. Yelena couldn't wait to tell Kate she was ready to share the holidays with a new addition to their little family.
