Autumn Winds

Summary:

Augustine startled at the noise. Who could possible be knocking at his door on thanksgiving of all times-?!

Augustine sighed. Regardless, Augustine had nothing else to do but answer it. So, he walked over to the door, not even bothering to look through the peephole. Augustine wasn't expecting much, maybe just some poor sales person trying to get his money instead of spending their time with their family. Augustine grips the handle, turning the door nob-

Only to jump back in surprise at the person in front of him. Blond hair, Blue eyes... He could recognize this person from a mile away.

"WINNIE?!"
____________

Augustine thought he would be alone for thanksgiving. He thought wrong. Not when Winnie is here!

Notes:

Made this as a happy thanksgiving! I adore Augustine and Winnie, I want them to have a good thanksgiving, so... I wrote this! It's pretty short, but I haven't written in a while so I thought: why not?

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Augustine loved thanksgiving, ever since he was little.

The only problem Augustine has with thanksgiving was the, well, lack of company he had at the moment.

Augustine's mom wasn't on very good relations with her family, and his dad's side was non-existent, so when Augustine was a kid it was just him and his mom for thanksgiving.

Eventually, Winnie's mom seemed to notice this, and that year Augustine had lots of fun having dinner with Winnie's huge family. They ended up keeping up this tradition until Winnie moved away a summer ago. He and Winnie still talked a bunch over text, but it wasn't the same. Yesterday, Winnie had texted on and on about how he and his family were having another big thanksgiving this year at Winnie's new house.

Augustine was happy for Winnie, he was. But Augustine still wished he was there with him. Augustine had prepared himself a turkey and some mashed potatoes with carrots, but it wasn't the same without someone with him.

Augustine had hoped to maybe call and talk with Winnie while eating, but Winnie hadn't picked up. Nor did Winnie pick up for the next three times Augustine called. It was.. weird, as Winnie usually picked up, no matter how busy he was. Augustine tried his best to ignore his worry. He pulled the turkey forward, ready to cut some pieces off, when..

KNOCK!

"WINNIE?!" Augustine gasped, eyes practically popping out of his skull. "What are you doing here?"

Winnie laughed at Augustine's expression, shaking the container he was holding close to his chest. "I came to visit you, silly! Knowing you, you didn't make any plans for anyone on thanksgiving..." Winnie looked around Augustine's living room, "...So I came to keep you company!"

Augustine blinked. That was very sweet of Winnie. But...

"You had dinner yesterday though? Won't you get tired of eating the same dinner twice in a row?"

"With you?" Winnie shock his head, stepping into the house. "Of course not! I love spending time with you, Auggie!"

Augustine blushed a little at Winnie blatant affection, but he does his best to shove it to the back of his mind. He can think of his feelings later.

For now, Augustine puts his attention on whatever is in the container Winnie is carrying.

Winnie was slipping off his jacket, careful to not jostle the container to much before Augustine blurted out his question. "What is that?"

"This?" Winnie lifted the container slightly, the translucent material creating a blurry type of image. "It's cupcakes. I made them for us to eat!"

"Cupcakes?" Augustine stared. "For Thanksgiving?" Winnie just walked past Augustine, ignoring his flat tone. When Augustine caught up, Winnie was already putting the container on Augustine's kitchen table, right next to the mashed potatoes.

"Is there set rules for what is not allowed at thanksgiving I should be worried about?" Winnie teased, grinning. Augustine just sat down, trying to push down a smile. "No... But it still doesn't fit the theme."

"Ah yes, the theme. How could I forget? The them is so important to you." Winnie deadpanned, hands pointing around Augustine's bland and colour-less kitchen. Augustine rolled his eyes at the motion, but stopped when Winnie pulled a chair and sat down next to Augustine.

Winnie was now making heart eyes at the food, dragging a sigh out of him. Winnie is somehow always been a wild card and completely predictable at the same time. "We better eat before it goes cold!" Winnie said, reaching out for the plate and fork in front of him that was... the only plate and fork there was.

Augustine stared at empty spot. He had no idea Winnie was coming, so... Augustine only washed one plate. He rarely had people over, so one of every cutlery and plate was all he needed for everything.

Winnie only seemed to notice when Augustine left his seat to get something he can eat with. Winnie looked confused. "Do you not already have a plate washed?" Winnie asked.

"No, it's not like I have anyone else over often." Augustine didn't even hesitate at his answer, too busy scrubbing a dirty plate. He didn't even question the silence that came afterwards, until he looked over at the table. Winnie was slumped a little, looking.. sad? Why?

"I'm not the only one that goes to your place, right?" Winnie asked, hesitantly.

Augustine sat down net to Winnie, new washed plate and fork in hand. He reached over and took some mashed potatoes, putting carrots on top. "...Yeah. But it's fine. You live very far away now. You don't need to worry about me-"

He was cut off by Winnie pulling Augustine into a weird side-hug. "Oh, Auggie... You should've told me, I would've come more often!"

"Winnie, I told you, it's fine. I'm not upset or anything." Augustine stared at his food he should be eating right now. Winnie finally let Augustine go. "Well, still. If you ever need company..." Winnie trailed off, looking dejected. Augustine held out his pinkie. "This is dumb, but I promise you i'll call you if I ever feel lonely, okay?"

Winnie took the pinkie promise, starting to smile a little again. "Okay, I trust you." Winnie sounded so sincere and bright, Augustine felt he needed to look away, his heart beating a mile a minute. He went back to his food as a distraction.

As he and Winnie ate, Augustine found himself remember just how much he liked thanksgiving. Eating turkey and mashed potatoes and carrots was great. If only he remembered to buy some gravy..

Augustine watched as Winnie finally opened the lid of the container to chocolate cupcakes with cute little sprinkles. He passed Augustine one. "What are you thankful for, Auggie?" Winnie was now looking at Augustine with a bright sparkle in his eye. It was cute. "I'm thankful for this wonderful food, and my family." Winnie then nudged Augustine with his shoulder to indicate that it was Augustine's turn to share.

"I'm thankful for not dying." Augustine then took a bite of his cupcake. The look of shock Winnie gave him afterwards made it worth it. "Auggie! Give an actual thing you're thankful for!"

"I'm thankful for.. Food, coffee, hockey, and... uh.." Augustine's eyes land on the man in front of him. "Our friendship."

Now it was Winnie's turn to blush. "Wow, Auggie.. That's so sweet.." Winnie was now giving Augustine a soft smile, leaning ever-so-closer to Augustine. Augustine could feel Winnie's breath. It's tempting to just push himself forward, catching Winnie with his lips, but Augustine stops himself.

Soon enough, the moment leaves. Winnie reaches and takes a bite of his cupcake. "Mmmm! This is really good..

Augustine sighed. He hopes he gets the confidence to do something eventually.

But until then, Augustine will enjoy thanksgiving with his best friend.

Notes:

If the end seems rushed, that is because it is! I was getting a little tired at the very end, so I wanted to make sure I finished it.
