Work Text:

He didn’t know exactly what he was expecting.

The other night, Lampert had mentioned that he’d never actually tried ice cream yet. He’d never found the time to within ROKEA, things like sweet treats not really being a necessity to him before. Kasper couldn’t believe it, practically dragging him to the elevator the next day.

They’d rode the elevator all the way to HC Icecream, Kasper promising he’d like it there.

“They’ve got mint, chocolate, blueberry, strawberry and vanilla. The best part is, you can pick whichever one you want!” He beamed, giving Lampert the time to decide on a flavor he wanted.

Lampert wasn’t too sure what to pick. He didn’t want anything too overwhelming or sweet right off the bat.

“Vanilla sounds nice, I suppose. I’ll have that one.”

They put in their orders, and Lampert watched his be made. Scooped neatly, onto a waffle cone. Kasper had told him there was more than one type of cone you could get, but it made sense to start with what was the common one.

When they’d been handed their respective ice creams, he'd tried some of his own cone. It was cold, though he expected that from everything he DID know about frozen treats.

When he turned to Kasper to tell him how he’d liked it, instead, he’d found him facing some sort of row of machines that dispensed out more ice cream. “Dude, check this out!” He spoke up, moving to the next one, then the next.

“I uh- found out a way to get more ice cream. Normally, they only let you get one extra scoop BUT, If you move your cone under every single dispenser, you can get one of every single flavor, see!” He turned around to reveal an ice cream cone with just as he said, every single flavor they had available. There were so many it stacked nearly to the ceiling, slightly taller than he was even.

In a way, Lampert found it endearing, although he himself was content with only one.

They moved their things to a table near the corner of the shop with the goal of actually sitting down to eat the ice cream they’d gotten, mostly considering it’d began to melt down Kasper’s hands.

(He remedied this by licking them clean, much to Lampert’s dismay.)

“You know,” Kasper started, half distracted with the task of working on the large stack he’d gotten. “I forgot to ask, did you end up liking yours? The ice cream, I mean.”
Lampert perks up, halfway done with his at that point. Well..
He enjoyed the simplicity of vanilla, but he liked how it was still the right amount of sweet. Not too little to be bland, but not enough to overwhelm him. It was nice.

“Yeah, it’s pretty good, actually. I like it.”

Kasper’s grinning from ear to ear. In response, he reaches into one of the pockets of his red jacket to pull out... A camera. Huh.

Lampert had suggested offhand a camera would be a good way for them to keep track of all the time they’d spent together, and Kasper had actually caved in and went to go get one shortly after. They hadn’t taken any photos yet, and Kasper decided now would be a perfect time to commemorate something.

“We’ve gotta take a photo, save the moment..” He says, setting up the timer and placing it on the other counter, before racing back to get in the frame.

There’s a small shutter noise, and upon retrieval, He presents the photo to Lampert, proud of himself.

Oh.

“Kas, your face isn’t in it.” Lampert notes. He’d sat down just before the photo would be taken, his ice cream accidentally obscuring his face before he had time to move it for the photo.

He laughed, moving the camera back into his pocket anyway. “We’ll take a better one later, then.”

The implication that they’ll spend more time together, and take more photos.

When they’ve mostly finished all their food, they separate ways in the elevator. Kasper leaves first, but not before waving him goodbye.

“I’ll see you around, man.” He says, stepping off.

“I’ll see you.” Lampert replies, and he watches as Kasper begins the walk to his apartment down the hall and eventually disappears around the corner.

When Lampert eventually makes it back home, going up the ramps to his base and having a seat in one of his chairs, he thinks to himself.

He appreciates what he does for him. The way he knows a place, or a guy, or a thing to do. The way there’s an entire world outside of what he’s known. And he thinks he likes that.

Spending more time together.

Trying new things.

He’d like that.
