Only the Moon Watches

Summary:

Draco is struggling, Luna sees him.

Notes:

Prompt: Moon

Work Text:

Dappled moonlight danced across the forest floor in concert with the rustling leaves above. Luna skipped between the trees, softly humming to herself. He'd come this way, the trail of angry red wrackspurts confirmed it.

She found him. Huddled in the shadows. Black cloak wrapped tightly to the neck. Beautiful starlit hair snuffed out by his hood. Eyes downcast, as if unaware of her presence.

"Draco," Luna murmured, dropping to her knees. She reached out to brush away the tear that rolled down his cheek.

"Go away," he snapped, twisting from her.

"Where to?" Luna asked.

"Back to the castle, where you are supposed to be."

"I'm supposed to be here, Draco. This is my home. Listen! You can hear my friends calling."

A low whinnying cry rumbled across the clearing. Hoofbeats cantered towards them. The warm breath of the thestral stirred her hair.

"Hello Eowyn," Luna greeted her friend, patting the velvety skin.

Eowyn neighed.

"A wonderful idea," Luna answered. "A flight is perfect for dispelling wrackspurts."

"Come on, up we go." She tugged Draco to his feet.

"I'm not getting on that."

"She'll be most upset if you don't."

A single menacing hoof-stamp; Draco clambered aboard. Luna leapt up lightly behind.

They took to the air.

"She's not a broomstick, Draco," Luna chided as Draco's fingers tugged Eowyn's wiry mane. "Just let her fly."

Luna threaded an arm around his waist. He leant back, his grip slackening.

They soared together, in silent companionship, watched only by the moon.
