41 years have passed since John Hammond and Benjamin Lockwood had a dream that seemed impossible: to bring back dinosaurs. Such a dream, starting as the best of intentions to bring joy to the world, would end in disaster in 1993, as well as many more, including a T. Rex rampage in 1997, and the opening and eventual closure of Jurassic World.
Various subsequent incidents would occur as a result, including rescuing a stranded child from Site B, as well as several kids stranded in Nublar, dubbed the Nublar Six.
But the most important event would be the Dinosaur Outbreak. Since 2018 and the Lockwood Manor incident, dinosaurs would finally set foot onto the mainland. Transported from Isla Nublar, along with genetic power being in the hands of multiple billionaires thanks to the auction, various corporations would have the material and tools to re-create and exploit these animals.
Things came to a head in 2022, when Biosyn Valley was at the epicenter of a conspiracy involving Biosyn, dinosaurs, and various genetically modified locusts that threatened the food supply. Once that was solved, it was believed that this would be the new normal: humanity having to learn to deal with and potentially co-exist with dinosaurs.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on who you ask, some things are not meant to be.
Since 2022, it has been discovered that dinosaurs and other de-extinct species, those outside of zoos, parks, and sanctuaries, are dying out due to the planet's climate, disease, and negative human-dinosaur interaction. Those outside of controlled environments would struggle to adapt or just outright die. It would seem the Neo-Jurassic Age would be short-lived.
But as said by Dr. Ian Malcolm…life will find a way.
The surviving dinosaur species either remain or migrate to equatorial environments to better suit their needs. There, especially in isolated regions, they thrive once more. Now, they, and other de-extinct animals, thrive in Central and Northern South America, the Caribbean Islands, Western and Central Africa, parts of Madagascar, and most of Indonesia and the Philippines. Areas within these regions became no-travel zones for the safety of the public.
The Neo-Jurassic Age is not over. It has merely transformed…evolved.
However, while human and dinosaur interactions became minimal, and much of the general public cares little about them, that does not mean certain people won't stop looking for these animals. Either to examine or exploit.
And sadly, whenever such encounters happen, things go very badly for man and dinosaur alike, with danger for both species…
Vale Do Javari, State of Amazonas, Brazil.
The Amazon Rainforest is one of the largest areas of biodiversity in the world. Located in several countries of South America, it is home to various creatures, from the tiny Poison Dart Frog to the elusive, yet dangerous Jaguars. In recent times, it has also become a hotspot for de-extinct fauna, one of the many places in the equatorial world that still houses them.
It is also home to numerous uncontacted tribes, which have been left alone by the outside world due to fears of contracting disease from the outside world.
Sadly, even without direct human contact, the outside world would come to affect them regardless.
In one corner of the Amazon River, three teenagers of the uncontacted Korubo tribe, armed with bows and arrows, are travelling near the river. One of them, a fourteen-year-old boy, leads ahead as they walk along the coast. Another, a 13-year-old boy named Netaye, asks him in his tribe's language,
"Luo, what's going on? What do you need to show us?"
The other boy, Luo, grins.
"There's a Uktamgo further down the riverbed! Come on!" Luo says. The others blink in confusion. Luo's referring to strange creatures that have been appearing here for a decade: the dinosaurs. But they didn't know this. Thus, they had to give them new names.
The third member, a 14-year-old girl named Iuagnia, blinks.
"Uktamgo? Brother, which kind of Uktamgo? If it's the ones with jaws that shatter bones, or the swimmer with sails, then we can-" she argues, but Luo shakes his head.
"No no no! It's one of the plant eaters. I think it's one with the bills like the Teal," he clarifies. Netaye and Igunia hum, the latter growing a smile before they continue to walk along the river.
"I remember seeing many of them before. They're beautiful. I wonder what they could mean in regards to the river gods," Igunia theorizes.
The three continue their journey across the river, talking to each other about what these dinosaurs could mean. As they walk on, they stop as they hear noises.
Hollow, bellowing sounds. Netaye raises a hand and pulls out a set of arrows, and they stop. They froze, listening to the jungle, listening to the bellowing that continues.
"I think it might be them," Igunia whispers. Netaye nods as they step back, hiding behind the bush.
"Let's hope the Witzcu are in our favor and we stay downwind," he whispers as the bellowing gets closer.
For what feels like an eternity, the bellowing continues, followed by heavy footsteps. Then, the trees push to the side as a large Parasauralophus walks out into view. The three watch as it sniffs the air. Then, making a bellowing noise, it walks over to the river. Before long, three more parasaurs walk into view: two adults and a baby.
Igunia, Netaye, and Luo watch in shock and amazement as the hadrosaurs walk close to the river for a drink. Netaye watches with amazement while Igunia grins, especially eyeing the baby, which is playing in the water, fascinated by the splashes it creates.
"Beautiful Uktamgo," she whispers to herself. The three teens watch as the parasaurs continue their business.
"Wanna kill one for lunch?" asks Luo jokingly. Netaye and Igunia glare at him, while he chuckles silently.
"Idiot, no! Our arrows can barely pierce their skin, and we don't have any spears. Let's just stay hidden and then leave," Netaye scolds. Luo snickers. Igunia scoffs before her eyes spot the baby parasaur looking in their direction. She gasps and pats Netaye.
"I think the baby's looking at us," she says. Netaye widens his eyes as he sees the baby slowly approaching, curious.
"Everyone…we've got to get out of here. If we do something that upsets the baby, the adults are gonna crush us," he warns. Luo and Igunia nod in agreement as they slowly begin to crawl back. The baby gets closer, pausing at the sight of rustling bushes.
At this point, one of the adults lifts its head from the river and looks back, seeing the baby growing tense. The adult grows cautious and turns around, approaching the baby. The three grit their teeth and stop, not wanting to risk escalation.
The adult watches where they are, the baby growing tense as a result.
"Shh…don't move…" Netaye whispers. Luo and Igunia watch.
Then, a noise from the jungle catches the baby parasaur's attention, and already tense from before, it begins to bellow in alarm. The other adults lift their heads as the standing adult bellows, going up on its hind legs and slamming its forelimbs onto the ground, before charging forward, desiring to protect the infant.
"SPLIT!" shouts Netaye as they split, the hadrosaur barely missing as they roll to the side. Netaye instinctively shoots an arrow, which hits the skin, but it doesn't go too deep, and the parasaur roars in response.
"Netaye!" Luo and Igunia shout as they stand up. They look to see the parasaur charging after them while the baby stays with the others.
"Go! Run!" Netaye shouts as he runs ahead. Igunia and Luo rush ahead as the parasaur chases after them. The three natives of the Amazons run as fast as they can as the parasaur chases after them. The hadrosaur barges through the foliage as it does so, stumbling as it gets thicker. Netaye notices and shouts,
"Follow me! The foliage will get too thick for it."
Igunia and Luo nod as they approach a different direction, following Netaye as they approach a thick section of the foliage. The parasaur bellows as it pushes through.
Soon, the three manage to jump over a log. But Igunia trips over a root. Luo looks back and rushes back as the parasaur continues to charge forward.
"Come on! You're not dying here!" he says as he grabs her and lifts her. Then, the two continue running, Netaye far ahead.
The chase continues for a bit before Luo notices the parasaur slowing down. Not only due to the foliage, but also because it felt satisfied. The parasaur soon stops and pants as the kids rush deeper into the woods. The parasaur stares before turning around, lumbering through the trees.
Soon, Netaye stops, exhausted. Panting, he looks back, not hearing or seeing the parasaur anywhere. Then, Luo and Igunia rush out of the brush.
"What happened? Are you two okay? Is it still after us?" asks Netaye. Luo looks back while Igunia shakes her head.
"I fell, but Luo went back and saved me. I…I don't think the Uktamgo's chasing us anymore. Otherwise it would've killed the both of us," she explains. Luo sighs.
"What happened? Why did it go after us? We didn't even do anything," he says. Netaye blinks.
"It's just protecting its baby. We were just too close, that's all. *sigh* Okay, next time, when we hear the Uktamgo…go the other way. Even if it's a herbivore," he says.
"What do we do now? Should we tell the Elder?" asks Luo as he and Igunia join Netaye. As the two boys talk, Igunia briefly looks back, imagining the parasaur returning to its child. She frowns.
"We're sorry for interrupting your peace," she says to herself before walking after the boys. Before long, the Amazon jungle is filled with the sounds of wildlife, both native and its new, de-extinct prehistoric creatures…
AN: Hey, everyone! I'm back!
It's been quite a while since I last wrote, and I'm terribly sorry for that. I don't really have any excuse other than procrastination. But I still want to write, so…here we are, at least!
This is another Jurassic Park/World fanfic I like to write, especially since after seeing Jurassic World: Rebirth. My thoughts on the film: it's fine. I think people were glazing it too much, especially on the Jurassic Park subreddit. The film's not good. But it's not BAD, either. It's alright. One thing I do hate is that they killed almost all the mainland dinosaurs, leaving them only in the tropics! I've ranted about this before, but I'll say: it's a dumb idea that limits the longevity of a franchise already struggling to justify its continuing of more sequels! And the reasons for it are dumb: climate, disease (that's more understandable, but still!) and oxygen levels being higher in the equator…when it's not that different from other parts of the world in real life! Ugh…That said, they are still in the equatorial mainland, so it's not like they haven't completely abandoned it.
So now, here we are. A story on the mainland that we should've gotten instead of Rebirth's story. Hopefully you guys enjoy it! And if you like Rebirth, that's great! I don't hate it: it's just a fun movie!
So…yeah! Hope you guys enjoy this prologue! And yes, I did make the aggressive dinosaur a herbivore because modern herbivores can be dangerous too, so why not dinosaurs?!
