Summary:

Thorn meets a woman he can’t look away from

Work Text:

In the bustling heart of a city that never slept, Thorn, the rugged and battle-hardened member of the Expendables, found himself in an unexpected predicament. After a long day of training and strategizing, he decided to unwind at a local bar, a place where the neon lights flickered like the adrenaline in his veins. He was accustomed to the attention of women, their eyes lighting up at the mere sight of him, but tonight was different.

As he leaned against the bar, nursing a whiskey, his gaze fell upon a woman sitting alone at a table across the room. She was striking, with long dark hair cascading over her shoulders and an air of confidence that drew him in. Yet, despite the magnetic pull, she seemed utterly uninterested in the world around her, her focus solely on the book in her hands.

Intrigued, Thorn approached her table, his usual swagger in full effect. “Mind if I join you?” he asked, flashing his trademark grin.

She looked up, her emerald eyes piercing through him like a dart. “Actually, I do mind,” she replied coolly, returning her attention to her book.

Taken aback, Thorn felt a rush of exhilaration. It was a refreshing change from the usual flattery he received. “I’m Thorn,” he introduced himself, undeterred. “What’s so interesting in that book?”

“Something far more interesting than a man who thinks he can charm his way into anyone’s attention,” she said, her tone playful yet firm.

Thorn chuckled, impressed by her boldness. “You’ve got me there. But I promise, I’m not just a pretty face.”

“Prove it,” she challenged, a hint of a smile tugging at her lips.

And so began an unexpected exchange. Thorn found himself drawn into a conversation that was both playful and intellectually stimulating. She was witty, sharp, and had a perspective on life that intrigued him. As they talked, he learned her name was Lila, an aspiring writer with dreams that reached far beyond the confines of the city.

Hours slipped by unnoticed, and Thorne realized he was captivated—not just by her beauty, but by her spirit. She challenged him in ways he had never experienced, making him question the very nature of his life and the choices he had made.

As the night wore on, Thorn felt a connection that was deeper than any fleeting romance he had encountered before. Lila was not impressed by his reputation or his past; she saw him for who he truly was, and that authenticity was intoxicating.

“Why do you do what you do?” she asked him, her eyes searching his.

“It’s complicated,” he replied, feeling the weight of his past. “But I guess I’m just trying to make a difference in my own way.”

Lila nodded, her expression softening. “That’s admirable. Just remember, there’s more to life than fighting battles. Sometimes, the hardest fight is letting someone in.”

As the bar began to empty, Thorn realized he didn’t want the night to end. “Can I see you again?” he asked, vulnerability creeping into his voice.

Lila smiled, a genuine warmth radiating from her. “Only if you promise to keep being yourself, not the soldier everyone expects you to be.”

Thorn nodded, feeling a sense of hope he hadn’t felt in years. In a world filled with chaos, Lila was a breath of fresh air, and he was ready to embrace whatever came next.
