“Haya-chan, where are we going?” Kiryu giggled, amused as the other boy covered his eyes and led him along.
Suo shushed him gently, leaning in so his breath tickled his boyfriend’s ear. “You’ll see, Mitsuki-kun, but you have to be patient,” he responded in a soft whisper.
“Aaaaahhhhhh,” Kiryu whined, “but you know I don’t have much patience,” he admitted with another small laugh. “Why do you have to be so mysterious about it?”
“Me? Mysterious? Never.” Suo’s voice lilted with a teasing sarcasm, a sound Kiryu had come to know and love.
“Sure, sure,” Kiryu chuckled at his boyfriend’s antics. “Are we almost there? I feel like I’m gonna trip over my own feet,” he joked, even though he’d been walking perfectly fine with Suo guiding him to their unknown destination.
“What, you don’t trust me to catch you if you fall?”
“Mmm, I’d rather not fall to begin with.”
“And yet,” Suo leaned in closer, “you already fell for me, didn’t you?”
At that, Kiryu cackled, the sound sudden and sharp and yet oh so delightful to Suo’s ears. “Oh my god, you did not just say that. Haya-chan, that was bad. Like, really bad. You’re such an old man with your jokes!” he teased.
“I thought it was smooth,” Suo replied light-heartedly, a hint of humor in his voice.
“It was.” Kiryu’s hands reached up to wrap around his boyfriend’s wrists, not removing them from his eyes but keeping hold in his own form of a hug as he tugged Suo closer. “Still bad though,” he joked with a short huff of laughter. “How have I put up with you for so long?”
“That’s a very good question. How have you?” Suo wondered aloud, then let out a very dramatic, fake gasp. “Could it be you actually like me?”
Kiryu laughed again. “I sure would hope so. Otherwise our first anniversary living together is gonna be super awkward.”
“Is that so?” Suo hummed contently, finally stopping Kiryu in his tracks, hands slipping away from the other’s eyes. “Perhaps you’ll like me even more when I’m making terrible dad jokes to our children.”
“Our what now?” Kiryu snickered, opening his eyes and widening them upon sight of the animal shelter in front of them. They’d been talking for a while now about possibly adopting a cat or two, but Suo had never been ready for it. Was this his way of saying it was finally time? Neither of them had ever had pets before, so this would be their first time adopting. And they’d be doing it together. “Haya-chan, really?!” Excitement pouring out of him, Kiryu swung around to face his boyfriend, hands clasping the other’s upper arms. “Really, you really mean it?! We’re finally gonna get a furbaby?!”
Suo’s smile grew. “I’ve already gotten us pre-approved to adopt, so we could even take one home today if we find one we like. Maybe even two. Wouldn’t want them to get lonely, after all.”
“Haya-chaaaaan,” Kiryu cried happily, jumping up and pulling the other into a crushing hug, his face burrowed into Suo’s neck. “You jerk, how could you keep this from me?!” he said, but the giddy kicking of his feet as Suo held onto him spoke to his true feelings.
“I wanted it to be a surprise,” Suo chuckled as he set his boyfriend back on his feet. “Are you surprised?” he asked, hands sliding down to hold Kiryu’s own in front of him.
“Of course I am, you dummy!” Kiryu laughed, wiping a gleeful tear from his eye as his lips settled into that typical cat-like smile of his. Staring back into Suo’s soft gaze, Kiryu watched him quietly for a moment, his voice lowering to a quiet, calm yet loving tone. “You’re always so mysterious, Haya-chan.”
Suo’s smile was gentle as he leaned in to capture the other’s lips in a delicate kiss. “You love that about me,” he quietly declared as they parted.
“I do,” Kiryu admitted, his fingers curling around Suo’s. His loving gaze morphed into something lighter as he tilted his head toward the entrance to the animal shelter. “Now what do you say we go meet our furbabies?”
“...Honestly, I thought you’d barge right in and leave me behind,” Suo joked as they walked hand-in-hand to the front door.
Kiryu gave him a small, teasing smack. “Nope. We’re doing this together, Hayato.”
“I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
It was the first anniversary of the two moving in together. And now, it would be the first time they would expand their little family – the first time they’d get to work together to look after a little one, furball or not.
And who knows – maybe someday they’ll adopt another first.
