White sparkles flash across a pink title card revealing the words: El’s History in black cursive. The title card pulls up to show a dark haired girl in her late twenties, staring dead at the camera.
El: Okay I know you guys were expecting my Little Women reaction and I’m sorry but that has been delayed for another week in order to support this insane theory.
She takes a deep breath raising her hands.
El: And yes! I know this sounds insane, but hear me out. I’ve done a stupid amount of research on this. And I’ve come to the conclusion that Klaus Hargreeves… is a time traveler.
A record scratch noise plays as the image freezes.
El, (voice over): Now you're probably wondering how I got here…
The scene cuts to El now nursing a steaming mug, that she sips periodically.
El: Okay so as long time viewers of my channel know I actually did my college thesis on the Vietnam war, so I was really excited to hear about a new movie, based on a true story called, Couching Beast set to come out in June 2020.
A poster of a four dirty looking men in American army fatigues with their arms around each other, all smiling the title The Crouching Beast written in bold letters at the top with the date of release underneath. Is shown on screen, before cutting back to El now a little closer to the camera.
El: The Crouching Beast is about a mysterious man trying to fit in and survive not only the Vietnam war but his own military. The characters and events that happen are loosely reflective of the people and events of the 173rd Sky Soldiers, in the late 60’s.
El: Now what does any of this have to do with time travel?
El leans in close to the camera staring intensely.
El: I’m getting there.
She leans back in her chair, picking up her mug.
El: Okay first, who is Klaus Hargreeves?
A close up headshot of Klaus beaming at a red carpet is shown on screen.
El, (v.o.): Klaus Hargreeves was born on October 1st, 1989 somewhere in Germany. After which he was adopted by Reginald Hargreeves.
A headshot of Reginald Hargreeves, scowling replaces Klaus’
El, (v.o.): Where he was raised with six siblings all also born on October 1st 1989, Luther, Diego, Allison, Number Five, Ben and Vanya Hargreeves.
Cropped and zoomed in photos from Luther’s moon publicity, Diego’s mug shot, Allison’s social media, A front page magazine photo with about the Umbrella Academy, Ben’s obituary and Vanya’s author photo form Extra Ordinary line the screen one at a time.
El, (v.o.): In 2002 Hargreeves debut his team of trained superpowered children that he called the Umbrella Academy.
The screen cuts back to El, trying to mask her disgust with professionalism.
El: Not much was known about them at the time, just their powers and their numbers.
The same series of photos this time flashing and holding one at a time in numerical order with bullet points summing up each sibling next to them.
El, (v.o.): Luther was Number One and has super strength.
El, (v.o.): Diego, Number Two can bend things he throws.
El, (v.o.): Allison, Number Three has… reality manipulation? I’m not quite sure how to word it but she says I heard a rumour… blah, blah, blah and the person does whatever she says.
The screen cuts back to El, absently fiddling with her pink jumper’s sleeves.
El: Klaus, otherwise known as Number Four has the power to see and talk to the dead. And was later discovered thanks to a broken NDA to have telekinesis, the ability to move things without touching them.
El: Number Five, whose real name we never learned before he vanished at thirteen, had the power to teleport.
El: Ben, Number Six …had a H.P Lovecraft monster in his stomach.
El shrugs slightly looking kind of uncomfortable.
El: That’s the best way I can describe it. Anyway unfortunately Ben died in an accident on January 14th 2006.
El: Vanya, the pretty recently discovered Number Seven, doesn’t have any powers but did grow up with the rest of them, and later wrote an autobiography Extra Ordinary: My Life as Number Seven.
She claps her hands together.
El: Okay back to Klaus
A picture of a much younger Klaus and Allison grinning at the camera arms linked are shown on screen.
El, (v.o.): Klaus and Allison Hargreeves moved to L.A. when they were eighteen and started building their careers as an special effects artist and an actress respectively, Klaus has become very respected and known in his field dozens of movies under his belt, a documentary: The CGI That Revolutionized Horror: Klaus Hargreeves and an Oscar.
Snapshots from Klaus’ career pop up on screen, before cutting back to El.
El: So in anticipation of the, The Crouching Beast coming out, I in my history nerd heart immediately went into research mode, …only to see a familiar face.
El raises her eyebrows.
El: Recognize it?
The squad photo of the 173rd Sky Soldiers zoomed into the face on the far right hand corner, the photo quality isn’t great but the resemblance is uncanny.
El: This friends, is private Klaus Hargrove. Yes you heard correctly Klaus Hargrove.
She looks disbelieving at the camera.
El: Yeah, and just in case you don’t see the resemblance, here’s them side by side.
The same army photo with the letters Klaus Hargrove underneath take up half of the screen, in the over half is a close up of a still from the documentary Klaus was in making a similar expression to the military photo with the name Klaus Hargreeves written underneath.
The clip from the Incredibles of Dash’s teacher yelling "coincidence I think not!”, plays on the screen. Before cutting back to El gesturing with her hands.
El: This is where the rest of the evidence comes in.
A black title card fills the screen, “The Evidence” written on in bold white letters. Before cutting back.
El: First off the chances of having two people look that alike with such similar names is astronomically small.
She holds up a hand in a stop motion, almost spilling her drink.
El: And before anyone accuses me of faking the military photo, I got it from Remembering the Vietnam War .
El fumbles below camera for a second before she holds up a thick book with the words Remembering the Vietnam war written in bold text on the front.
El: Which was published in 1988, I encourage you to check it out for yourself. It’ll be in my biography at the end of this video with the rest of my sources.
She puts the book and her mug down, getting more and more animated as she continues.
El: Then there are the tattoos, Klaus Hargreeves has multiple very recognizable tattoos, the most famous of which are the words “HELLO” and “GOODBYE” written on his palms.
She raises her hands, palms showing for emphasis, before two separate photos of Klaus waving one with each hand are shown on screen. As well as a picture of Klaus wearing a low cut flouncy shirt with a very snazzy blazer over top, his Ouija style alphabet tattoo on his chest clearly visible.
Another army photo is shown featuring Hargrove posed much more casually smirking lazily, half waving with this right hand the letters L, L and O can be seen on his visible palm, as well as half the alphabet written across his shirtless chest only obscured by the green vest he’s wearing the 173rd insignia can be seen tattooed on his shoulder as well as his dog tags while the other holds a cigarette to his mouth a few of the other men around him playing cards and smiling at the camera.
El: And then they're are these new tattoo’s
A few zoomed in pictures of Klaus’ stomach, wrist and shoulder can be seen.
El: Now I know that the shoulder picture is blurry as hell but the size, placement and colour of the tattoo are a match for Klaus Hargrove’s in the picture I just showed.
The two pictures are seen again this time zoomed in on the shoulders and the tattoo there. Before cutting to a much clearer picture of Klaus’ wrist.
El: But moving on... Klaus did not have this tattoo before his dad’s funeral but he does one week later and this would be totally normal, if this tattoo wasn’t this healed.
A picture from the red carpet where Allison and Klaus learned about Reginald’s death, dated March, 23rd. Zooms into Klaus’ wrist where he’s holding Claire Baker’s hand.
Photo from Allison Hargreeves’ social media of Allison, Diego, Klaus Hargreeves at brunch, is shown on the screen dated April, 3rd before zooming into Klaus’ wrist a tattoo of a bear cub clearly visible where his chin is resting on his palm.
El: A tattoo takes at least three weeks to look that healed. So there is no way that he got that tattoo less than three weeks ago but yet twelve days earlier; no tattoo. Impossible. Unless he did in fact have it for longer, because he time traveled!
She waves it off, shaking her head.
El: There is also the fact that in every photo of him taken after his father’s funeral Klaus can be seen wearing a pair of dog tags.
Multiple recent photos of Klaus are shown on screen, his dog tags clearly visible. The last one has Klaus Hargreeves and his new husband mid laugh, their dog tags catching the light.
El: In an interview with that I found with Sergeant Jimmy Parker, about the 173rd, published in 2012, Hargrove is described as...
A photocopied interview article is shown on the screen.
El, (v.o.): “Hargrove came out of nowhere, to this day I have no idea how he got there. Queer as could be that one, it was obvious. I’m now ashamed to say that we gave him a hard time for it, it was only after he saved our lives a couple of times that he really became one of us. He was a freaky one, though, I once saw him throw a man twice his size across the room without laying a hand on him. He always knew where the traps or snipers were, it was like he could see something we couldn’t. He would talk to the air like it would answer him. He and his buddy Katz were declared MIA a few months later and we never saw them again.”
The matching quote on the picture of the article is highlighted as she talks, pausing so that it can be read before cutting back to El.
El: All this which fits with Klaus Hargreeves’ powers of seeing the dead and telekinesis!
She leans forward, speaking faster and more intensely.
El: And if you think the name Katz sounds familiar... well. Here the Hargrove’s buddy Katz, Sargent Parker is referring to Private David Katz of the 173rd.
The same group military photo is shown again, this time zoomed out a bit to show the face of David Katz, standing shoulder to shoulder with Klaus Hargrove.
Cutting back to El she raises her eyebrows in incredulity.
El: Klaus Hargreeves married an otherwise unknown man named Dave Katz four months ago.
A picture taken from Klaus’ social media of Dave and Klaus is shown on screen. After that a close up of David Katz’s army photo, with the words, David Katz (1968) takes up one side of the screen while a zoomed in photo of Klaus Hargreeves, Dave Katz and Claire Baker from Allison Hargreeves’ social media on the other with the words Dave Katz (2019) written underneath.
The screen cuts back to El waving her hands back and forth, smirking slightly.
El: Hell of a coincidence huh?
She leans into the camera, staring at it intensely.
El: Now some of you may be asking how did he time travel?
She shrugs wildly at the camera.
El: I have no F-BEEP-ing idea, but I also don’t know why Ben Hargreeves could hold a tentacle monster in his stomach or how Allison’s powers work, Umbrella Academy bulls-BEEP-t I’m guessing. Doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Either that or this is the weirdest coincidence ever. And frankly I think my theory makes more sense.
El claps her hands together.
El: Well if you made it this far, I thank you for humouring my rambling, I promise I will be going back to my usual reviews and reactions, starting with my promised “Little Woman” one next week. Don’t forget to like, subscribe, hit the bell more notifications and let me know how crazy I am in the comments below. And I’ll see you guys next week. Bye!
She beams at the camera waving goodbye.
A black title card comes on screen with over a dozen book, magazine and social media sources written in small white writing.
