Winter’s Flower Blooms

Summary:

The high school heartthrob — Itoshi Rin — was cold, calm, and calculated. He and his brother transferred to Ichinan High School. Everyone pretty much knew — to get close to him was a thing only a fool would try.

Your plain, average Joe — Isagi Yoichi — was anything but a quitter.

But perhaps sometimes giving up is the right thing.

Perhaps…he should have just given up earlier.

Notes:

First fic :D basically he has Hanahaki (good ending trust)
The build for this story is gonna be SLOW. Like the actual Hanahaki comes later.

Enjoy >.<

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: (Blue) Introductions

Chapter Text

The hanahaki disease — a disease known for its prolonged suffering. For one to develop this illness, they have to be faced with an unrequited, or in other words, one-sided love. This leads to a flower, specifically a red rose, blooming inside their heart and lungs, gradually filling every inch of it.
Till they forget what a breath of air even means.
Till they forget what breathing felt like.
And the last thing they'll see?
The face of the one they could never have.
The face of the one who planted the roses there in the first place.
The face of the one who wouldn't stop watering the flowers.
Before they know it, their consciousness slips away, just like how their beloved was never meant to stay.

"Rin. Itoshi Rin."

The words left his mouth, as dry as ever, leaving only the awkward silence to hang for a second too long in the classroom.

"Ah! Yes, uh Rin, what a nice name! Now please take a seat beside...Isagi Yoichi in the back."

Isagi's hand shot up almost immediately, signaling Rin on where to go. Rin's gaze locked on Isagi. 'Hm.' The former scanned the latter up and down. "Plain" was the first word that came to his mind. And he was right. Isagi did not look anything special or outstanding. He was of average height, had dark blue hair which you could tell he combs with only his fingers, and a...sprout? Rin furrowed his eyebrows, those two small bundles of hair sticking out from Isagi's head were weird; unsettling, even. Isagi had big, round and shining eyes filled with a deep ultramarine blue which made his eyes look like an ocean. "Well I guess it's obvious what kind of colour palette this kid is going for." Rin mused inwardly.

"Nice to meet you, Itoshi-kun," Isagi put out his hand. "I'm Isagi, Isagi Yoichi!"

'Bubbly...' Rin thought as he side-eyed Isagi, slowly shifting his gaze down towards the outstretched hand.

Rin blinked.

Isagi blinked.

But before Isagi could pull his hand back, Rin reached out his own and gripped onto Isagi's hand. 'What a strong grip...' Isagi sweat dropped.

"Drop the honorifics, just call me Rin. Don't confuse me with my brother, blueberry."
Rin said in a monotone voice, dry as ever, then turning back to face the teacher.

'Blueberry?' Isagi parroted in his head.

Or at least that was what he should have been thinking of. If only he wasn't so focused on his hands — and how perfectly they fit Rin's.

Word spread like wildfire about the Itoshi brothers among the Ichinan High students. For new students to be coming in during the second half of the year was pretty rare.
Plus, they were hot. Like criminally hot.
Tall?
Athletic?
Attractive?
They checked all the boxes. So naturally they had the whole school swooning for them by day two.

Rin had perfectly combed dark turquoise hair, with some hair falling down the front of his face being brushed to the right. His seemingly perfect face was complimented by a pair of sharp yet bright teal eyes. Eyes that would stand out in any room. The type of eyes that would make someone's breath hitch. The eyes that would catch one's attention from miles away, captivating them in the ethereal shades of blues and greens. Being paired with a sharp jawline and high-nose bridge, Itoshi Rin was the definition of beauty.

His brother was no less. Unlike Rin's neat hairstyle though, Itoshi Sae's hair was noticeably but deliberately more tousled, with brushed up bangs that complimented his face shape, all painted in a dull and dusty shade of magenta.
He had matching teal eyes. However his was more knowing, like he could see through a person with just a glance. His eyes would lock onto a person like he was analyzing their every move, judgemental and disorienting. Yet at the time, a touch of concern behind those unapologetically cold, teal eyes. Same sharp jawline, same nose-bridge — Itoshi Sae truly gave off the mature and analytic vibes, outrageously charming of him.

Their defining features such as their eyes made it easy for anyone to tell that they were related. However, for them, the Itoshi brothers couldn't care less about the popularity or the fangirls (and some boys).
They were too calm, too calculated, too indifferent for that kind of stuff.

That's what the students concluded, at least. But if someone were to really ask the siblings? They would say that these types of things are just distractions, annoying ones. Let's be real though — they're just anti-socials with minimal social skills, they just won't admit it.
