Work Text:

Trini paused in her stride into the apartment, nearly dropping the bag of groceries in her left hand. "I knew you wanted to use the ultra huge muffin tins you found at the thrift store, but this is a bit much."

"Did you get the mixes?" Kim asked, ignoring Trini's snark.

"Yes, and the vanilla and cheesecake flavored icing and food dyes you asked for."

"Thank you baby." Kim continued to use the spatula in her hand to fold the bowl of mix she had in the crook of her arm. There was remanence of the batter on the counter, and a rack of  three dozen cupcakes already near the worst of the mess.

"So...? Bad day?" Trini asked, removing her heels and walking around the counter. Kim rarely cooked before becoming a parent, but Trini had more than once seen her wife stress bake during finals season in their college years, or at the height of the constant barrage of monsters that Rita sent their way from space.

"Nope! Since we're going to Pride tomorrow, and Sara wanted to bake with me earlier, I thought I'd make some cupcakes to sell for ten bucks a pop and donate the proceeds to Keshet, and some to The Trevor Project maybe." Kim accepted her wife's kiss mid-mix and turned so she would watch Trini sit at one of the stools by the counter. Trini let out a sigh of relief.

"Ten bucks? Really?"

"What's wrong with that?"

"That's a lot to charge our queer family members. Plus, it is Pride. You should give them out for free."

"Well put that way, you make me sound like an evil capitalist. It is for a good cause. We should at least cover the cost of the materials."

"This was maybe thirty dollars tops, since I got it from the dollar store. I'll have to get the receipt from my purse. We could eat the cost of materials. You got three dozen there. The stuff I got could make about four or five more batches if you want to. So going on the low side of seven dozen -  or eighty-four cupcakes of this size, even if you sell them even for five bucks each, that would be... four hundred twenty dollars to donate, assuming you sell out."

"Watching you do mental math should not be as hot as it is. Alright. I don't want to over charge, but I did want to make sure I had a decent donation."

"I get it. Tell you what: If you sell out, I will personally match it. Whichever charity you choose."

"Really?"

"Yes. It won't come from the joint account, but my own petty cash fund."

"Which has more in it than mine."

"Because you spend your money on coffee dates with Sara and large ass cupcake tins," Trini retorted fondly.

"I have to entertain the munchkin somehow."

"Speaking of, is she on her tablet again?"

"Not exactly."

"What could that possibly mean?" Trini asked with a raised eyebrow.

Kim smiled. "She has the tablet running on her music station. She is listening to her Disney soundtrack playlist, but she got really into one of the books from her summer reading list."

Trini looked surprised by this. It usually was like pulling teeth to get their daughter to read for fun. She made a mental note to see what book it was she liked and see about buying more like it to encourage the habit and keep her from being on her tablet every spare second, especially now that she is out of school for the summer. "Wow."

"Yeah. There is a book series from that same author, and it is similar from this one-off that maybe she will like. I plan to take her to the library on Monday to see if it is still there," Kim said as if to read her wife's mind.

"Sounds like a plan. The librarian may know other books like it or the genre itself to help her find others as well."

"Yeah, that is what I was thinkin'. SARA!!!"

A moment later, their nine year old daughter walked in. She grinned when she saw her mother. She hurried to the stool and wrapped her arms around her middle. "Hi Mama!"

"Hi Baby."

"Have a good day?"

"It was tiring, but yes. Good. You?" The girl nodded. "Do you still have some drawing pages and working coloring supplies?"

"Yeah, of course I do," Sara replied. Trini knew this, having taken her shopping for said materials not long before school let out so that she had things to do with Kim during the day if any outings weren't an option.

"Wanna make signs for the cupcakes? We need to let people know that they are not vegan friendly or gluten free."

"Oh yeah, because people need to know that," Kim nearly murmured.

"Yeah, lemme get them," Sara said at the same time. The two women watched their daughter hurry off. A moment later, the Disney music began to get louder as Sara returned with her art supplies and her tablet.

"Put that on the table out of the way so that Mommy doesn't get batter on it," Trini said.

"Good idea," Sara replied easily.

"You act as if I will spill it every where." When Trini looked around purposefully, her gaze landing on the largest of the messes,  Kim rolled her eyes. "Yeah yeah..." Then she brightened a bit. "Hey, when you are done with that, I should have this batch of batter in the oven and the dyes mixed into the frosting to decorate the cupcakes with the pride flags. Wanna help with that?" she asked.

Trini nodded, though she was sure the question was for their daughter, who let out a small yip of excitement. "Yes!"

"Alright!"

"So... when is dinner happening around here?" Trini asked after a moment of working sorting the colors for the signs.

"Um..." Kim looked at the oven and back to Trini.

Trini sighed. "Pizza?"

Kim and Sara both shouted, "PIZZA!" in unison.

Trini shook her head and took out her phone to make the order. After that the family worked together to make the signs and decorated the cupcakes together.
