We’re kicking off the anniversary celebrations with a bang! On this day 4 years ago, the Lightning Hero Agency was founded to support the legacy hero E-Soul. Since then, we’ve grown from a team of 3 to a team of over 40 employees spanning different departments, dedicated to aiding E-Soul in saving others.

“Here’s your cue cards.”

“Thanks.” Yang Cheng gratefully takes the papers from where Xia Qing is holding them out to him, putting his cup of coffee to the side as he skims through the papers before pausing. “This is specifically for the bursary announcement, right?”

Xia Qing nods, a small smile on her face. “You’ll go live in about 10 minutes, once they’re done preparing the stage.”

“Alright, thanks.” Yang Cheng’s head dips as he skims the script with a renewed intensity, blue eyes narrowing.

There’s a soft click as Xia Qing switches off her tablet, before she pulls out a chair next to him and sits down. “Nervous?” she asks, lifting a hand to gently smooth down some of Yang Cheng’s flyaway hairs as best as she can. Despite her best efforts, more of them seem to pop up, and the both of them huff out a laugh.

Even on the best of days, some of his hair is always flat or sticks out weirdly – a long term consequence, Yang Cheng figures, of wearing the E-Soul helmet. It drives PR and any makeup artists crazy when they have to do broadcasts with his helmet off, but even with all the complaints to Engineering, nothing has changed about it. He has a sneaking suspicion that it’s probably because Shang Chao thinks it’s cute.

“I’m always going to be nervous,” he admits, shifting slightly in his seat. The armor he’s wearing dims its blue light a little, even as he taps a steel-toed boot against the floor. “PR wrote this?”

Xia Qing hums. “Yes.”

“Will you kill me if I, uh,” Yang Cheng winces. “Go off-script?”

“How off-script are we talking?”

There’s no use lying to her. After six years of being his manager and partner, she can read him like a book. “...Everything.”

Xia Qing laughs, bopping him lightly on the head with her tablet. “As your manager, I’m obliged to tell you to stick to the given speech so that you cause less trouble for all of us, especially since this is a live press conference. Even if I give a heads-up to PR, I can’t protect you from their wrath later, you know. But as your partner…”

Her voice is softer, even as she taps Yang Cheng’s chest with her index finger, smiling as their eyes meet. The core in his armor pulses with a soft blue light under her fingertips. “We know how much this means to you, specifically,” she says quietly.

He can’t help but let out a laugh, allowing her to prod him. “It feels a bit selfish.”

“You were the one who pushed for it when we started the agency. And now that we finally have the funds to do it…” Xia Qing trails off, before she motions for Yang Cheng to lean down. The kiss she brushes on top of his forehead is gentle, loving. “Go for it. You know this topic better than all of us. And we’ll support you all the way, even if–”

“– I fuck up the broadcast,” Yang Cheng finishes, wincing at the tremor already present in his voice. Even after all these years, there are some things he’s never been fully able to get over.

Like public speaking, he thinks to himself ruefully. Even despite Xia Qing and Shang Chao’s reassurances, he’s sure there’s still a couple of his mistakes out there on the Internet.

“It’s okay.” As usual, the weight of Xia Qing’s hand on his shoulder is reassuring. If he closes his eyes and imagines hard enough, he might be able to feel the warmth of her palms, too. “Remember, we’re all supporting you.”

Just then, a beeping alarm on Xia Qing’s tablet goes off, ringing out into the small, enclosed space of the dressing room. Xia Qing barely glances at it before she dismisses it with a flick of her finger. “Come on, E-Soul. It’s time.”

Yang Cheng heaves himself up from the seat as the helmet slots into place around his face, clicking shut with a satisfying whrrr that makes him smile. “Promise me you’ll at least try and protect me from PR?”

Xia Qing laughs, her voice now sounding slightly faraway and muffled to Yang Cheng’s ears. “I’ll see what I can do. Let’s go.”

It really isn’t Xia Qing’s fault that the moment he takes the stage, everything that he’s memorised from the script goes up in a puff of smoke. There’s a teleprompter out of view of the cameras currently livestreaming E-Soul standing on stage, screening the words that he’s supposed to say. And right behind it, he can see Shang Chao holding up a thumbs up, confident smile in place.

Xia Qing’s words from before echo in his head, sweet and gentle. We’ll support you all the way. Said like a fact, not a possibility.

Fuck it, he thinks. Let’s do this.

“Before I was E-Soul,” he begins, his voice scratchy and electronic through the helmet, “I was an orphan.”

The agency’s broadcast room is set up so that the stage and speaker’s podium is in the center, illuminated all over by soft blue lights. The bright lighting, combined with his central position in the room, means that Yang Cheng gets treated to a full view of the exact second in which his PR team realises he’s not going to be following the script.

“Thugs killed my parents when I was a child, and the first E-Soul was the one who saved me.” He holds out his wrist, watching the bright blue Trust Value numbers flash into existence, rapidly rising the longer the livestream rolls. “Years later, here I am – standing in front of you all as the next E-Soul. But what was I before then?”

It only takes a second. With a practiced flick, he unlatches his helmet, taking it off and setting it on the podium in front of him.

“I was a nobody,” he says out loud, to the room at large full of his employees and to the unseen masses out there beyond the glass doors, listening into the livestream as they go about their daily lives, absent and unmissable.

His breath hitches on his next inhale.

“I was someone with no Trust Value at all, because there was no one in my life to believe in me.”

All around him, the world seems frozen, waiting for the next word that leaves his mouth.

Hands trembling, he reaches around the back of his neck to unlatch another mechanism. A piece of his shoulder guards lands on the stage, the thud echoing in the silence. “And because of that, I was invisible to society for the first 22 years of my life.”

“When I was visible, I was called so many things. Loser, liar, criminal. Maybe they assumed I was one when I was an adult. But what about when I was just a child?”

Chestpiece, arm guards, greaves. They all fall to the floor one by one, until he stands there on the stage entirely armorless. With a final click, he detaches his prosthetic from his right arm, and looking into the camera, lets that fall, too.

“Those with 0 Trust Value are continually discriminated against in society. Having a 0 is always associated with past villainy or crime, despite the fact that 90% of repeat offenders still retain some form of Trust Value after their first conviction. But there’s another class of people that are more susceptible to having 0 Trust Value, and that is orphans.”

Sorry, we only accept people who have Trust Value. Sorry, we can’t help someone like you. Why would we help someone like you? You’re nothing but a–

“ I had opportunities denied to me multiple times on the basis of my dead parents, despite qualifying for them fair and square. I was lucky enough to meet friends, eventually. People that were important to me, who gave me my first few points of Trust Value. I was lucky. But what about those who aren’t?”

Finally, finally, he dares to look away from the camera, briefly surveying the room. They’re all staring at him, wide-eyed, even his PR team – except for Xia Qing and Shang Chao, standing together in the wings, smiling at him.

And just like that, the strength in his voice returns.

“It is my honor to announce that Lightning Hero Agency will be introducing a bursary directed at supporting those with 0 Trust Value…”

The moment the cameras cut, Yang Cheng sprints off the stage, ducking behind Xia Qing as fast as he can. “Hide me,” he hisses into Xia Qing’s ear, using his left arm to spin her in place so that she’s facing forward.

Xia Qing, the traitor, just laughs and moves aside so that Yang Cheng can see the gradually-approaching silhouette of one very angry, cardigan-wearing CEO holding a prosthetic hand.

He doesn’t manage to dodge the first whack that Shang Chao lands on his shoulder, wincing and cowering away as Shang Chao karate-chops the air furiously in front of him. “You!” Shang Chao whacks him again in the collarbone, a little more gently this time. “How many times have I told you not to throw your arm on the floor? Or your armor! Engineering’s going to come crying to me over how you don’t treat your equipment right again, and I’m going to have to comfort seven robotics nerds who use my weakness for crocodile tears to make me buy a thousand dollars’ worth of titanium alloy for experiments–”

“Ow, ow, I’m sorry–! I just thought it would help– get my point across–”

“Doesn’t mean you had to just drop it on the floor, if the studio tiles cracked–”

“I had to take it off somehow and there were no tables–”

“--stripping in front of everyone else, do you know how it looks–”

“-- I was not stripping–”

“It might as well be that way–”

“Alright, boys,” Xia Qing neatly steps in between them at the last possible moment, smiling as she catches Shang Chao’s arm. “The stream’s over. Good job, you two.”

With a twist of her wrist, she extracts the prosthetic forearm from Shang Chao’s hands, offering it hand-side up to Yang Cheng. He barely hesitates before taking it from her, slotting it back onto his stump and feeling the air rush out of the seam. With it, he exhales – even though it’s been more than three years since he’s lost it, it always feels odd to move without his arm for too long. A side effect, he supposes, of using it every chance he gets.

He glances up again to find both Xia Qing and Shang Chao watching him. There’s a trace of concern in Shang Chao’s eyes as he reaches forward to pat Yang Chao on the head, a small smile appearing on his face. “Jokes aside,” he says softly, “You did great. Thanks, A-Cheng.”

It’s stupid, how even the smallest bit of praise from either of them still has the power to make him blush red after five years. He can already feel his face heating up, even as the both of them glance at him amusedly, Xia Qing letting out a small giggle. “...Thanks,” he mumbles, willing the pink in his cheeks to die down faster. He looks back at Xia Qing and Shang Chao, his voice going a little bit quieter. “Do you think… it’ll be enough?”

He’s never needed to elaborate, with them.

When they glance at each other, it’s Xia Qing who responds first, voice gentle. “You can’t rescue everyone, A-Cheng.”

“What matters is that we’re doing our best.” Shang Chao adds, then grins. “While trying not to go bankrupt.”

“It just…” Yang Cheng forces himself to exhale. He links his fingers together, closing his eyes for a moment as he feels the sensation of warm metal against his skin before twisting the ring on his finger slightly. “We can’t stop helping them here. We should expand, grow bigger…”

“Of course not, A-Cheng,” Shang Chao says, voice warm. “This is just the beginning.”

EXCLUSIVE: Coffee Chat with #9 E-Soul’s Manager, Xia Qing

You may have heard of the 9th-ranked legacy hero E-Soul and his work in heroics. But have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes? We sit down for a coffee chat with E-Soul’s manager, Xia Qing, for a quick look into her work-life balance, her insights on the hero industry’s future, and what’s next in store for E-Soul and Lightning.

As the youngest-ever female founder of a hero agency, you’ve consistently advocated for greater representation of women not just within heroism, but within the industry as a whole.

Yes, I have.

What are your opinions on the current state of the industry for women?

It’s been a great few years for women in heroism. This year, we have three female heroes in the top 10. That’s the most there’s ever been since the founding of the Hero Commission. Queen’s steady position at number 2 for multiple years also shows that women are quite capable of ranking highly in the standings, and her fight with Hero X in the last tournament showed that she was nearly on par with him.

But outside of the top 10, the ratio of women to men in the overall hero standings still stands at 1 in 7. That’s 14 women in the top 100 total. If we count genderfluid and nonbinary heroes alongside them, we have 16 heroes. Much more needs to be done in terms of representation for women and gender non-conforming individuals, especially when both these two groups already face regular social discrimination.

Do you think it’s possible that we’ll see a shift towards gender equality and diversity in the hero industry, especially in the next few years?

Yes, I definitely believe it’s possible! After all, it’s only been 42 years since Trust Value was discovered and heroes were born. We still have a long way to change and grow.

Your agency doesn’t have the most conventional structure.

A lot of that is because we were essentially a startup. When we first split from Mighty Glory, we were left with no resources. We got used to doing things by ourselves for a long time, and this carried over into our management. For example, our approach to publicity and promotion is a bit unorthodox. Most other hero agencies’ CEOs or founders keep a lower profile in the public eye compared to us. But, well… Shang Chao has always loved being actively involved in all aspects of Lightning, in whatever way he can.

And his 900,000 follower count on FOMO is quite reflective of that. That’s more than some celebrities or heroes will ever get in their lifetimes.

[laughs] Yes. He’s always been quite charismatic.

This brings me to my next question, which is regarding the public. There’s been a lot of attention on your relationship since it was first announced.

Yes. We expected this from the start, since we’re one of the first high-profile polyamorous relationships in the hero industry.

The first in history, actually!

Oh! Well, it’s nice to have that confirmation. [laughs]

Returning to the question – why do you think the public is so invested in your relationship in particular, and how has it affected you?

It’s simple – our history makes for a good story. Three friends meet in university, fall in love, and start a hero agency to achieve their dreams together. It almost feels like a fairytale.

Sometimes, people love trying to define me by my job or gender to read into my relationship with Shang Chao and Yang Cheng. I’ve heard phrases like “unequal power dynamics” and “internalised sexism” being thrown around in relation to my job, which is… absurd. I chose to be a hero manager not because it’s typically a “woman’s role”, but because it was the option that offered me the most stability at a time where I needed it. The money I'm making from managing E-Soul is putting my brother through school. The three of us agreed on what would happen from the start, because we’ve always been partners with an equal stake in the agency. So I hope that shuts down this line of thinking.

That’s a great response. About a year and a half ago, your fiance Shang Chao announced your engagement on social media. Can we look forward to a wedding in the near future?

Of course, it’s been on our minds. But saving lives will always come first, as well as prioritising the wellbeing of the agency… It’s hard enough to find pockets of time that we can all spend together. But marriage is still definitely on the cards.

Do you ever find it exhausting, balancing your professional and private life like this?

Wrangling them gets tiring sometimes, of course. But they’re my boys. I wouldn’t trade this life for anything else in the world.

We’re nearing the end of this interview. Is there anything you’d like to say to the readers of this article?

Lightning first came to life in a small, run-down storehouse. Since then, we’ve grown to become a true, full-fledged hero agency, dedicated to supporting E-Soul and other heroes our way.

A lot of people talk about Lightning like it was the product of three entrepreneurial geniuses. But we wouldn’t have gotten to where we are today without the support of many people, including our supporters and family. In fact, a huge part of our success has actually been luck - in circumstances, in resources, and for me, in finding the right people at the right time. This journey has been nothing short of a blessing, and I’m excited to see where we’ll be in ten years’ time. I hope those reading this article are, too.

Many of the problems Xia Qing mentions in her article are also issues that affect female heroes. For example, we face pressure to conform to the stereotype that women are better at managerial work, resulting in a lower number of women entering heroics every year. Our untapped potential is limited by people who believe that women should not be heroes, despite us clearly showing them otherwise. More needs to be done to raise awareness about the gender disparities in the industry.

It has come to my attention that a large majority of our employees have not been keeping up-to-date on their cybersecurity know-how. We’ve received a much larger course enrollment this time round compared to previous ones. More concerningly, most of the individuals who fell for our phishing email are from our tech-related departments (Engineering, R&D, Socials, I’m looking at you).

For those of you who fell for our phishing email, remember to complete the mandatory cybersecurity course by next Monday, 10am. If you need a deadline extension, feel free to email me.

Finally, this is a reminder that if you see any unsavory or suggestive pictures of E-Soul on the Internet, please forward them to me and Xia Qing ([email protected]) so that we can get PR to deboost and take them down. Thanks!
