Work Text:

Eddie woke up a little early than usual today. Why? Because he was seeing a pretty lady, that's why! He was supposed to meet her at 12 today. The date was nothing fancy, just a simple study date together, that's all.

When he was about to head out the door when he got a call from someone. Oh, it's his date! "Hey, what's up?" Eddie greeted, "We're still going to study together, right?" He asked. "Sorry, Eddie. But i think i have to cancel our date today." The girl apologized.

Eddie's heart sank when he heard that (but he kind of expected it since she called). "Why so sudden?" Eddie asked. "Oh, nothing. I remembered i need to do something today. Let's just... Reschedule, okay? I-I'll see you later..." His date hung the phone.

Eddie understood why she had to cancel the date abruptly (sort of). But he still felt a bit dissapointed since he looked forward to this for 2 whole days.

"Now what?" He asked to himself. He didn't know how to spend the day, and he had no plans for today either.

Eddie made the decision to just go on a walk, clear his mind and kill some time. And then, he noticed someone familliar on the sidewalk. "Hey, Max!" Eddie called out to his friend. "Eddie!" Max returned the greeting.

"Where are you going?" Max added, "Uh, nowhere, really. Where are you headed to?" Eddie asked, shoving his hands into the pocket of his jeans. "The bookstore. A new volume got released a week ago, and i've been dying to get my hands on it." Max explained as they walked. "You, reading?" Eddie raised a brow, "I never pictured you as a bookworm." He said playfully. "Nah, not really a bookworm. I like comics more than novels." Max dismissed Eddie's assumption.

When the two boys were in the bookstore, Max can't help but to feel frustrated. He checked every shelf and yet he can't find the book he was so desperate to get!

"Dude, you've been at it for half an hour now. Let's just go." Eddie tried to convinced Max to give up the search. "It must be here somewhere!" Max declined, unusually stubborn. Eddie was leaning against a book rack, he placed a hand over his mouth as he yawned, getting tired at whatever Max was searching for. Max on the other hand was squatting down. He was looking through the lowest shelf to see if it was hidden somewhere.

After a while, Max concluded that the book wasn't in that book rack. The brunette sighed as he stood up. He looked to the side, the last bookshelf standing there... With the book he was looking for?!

The electrician's lips curled into a big, wide smile before it curled downwards into a frown when someone else took it before he did.

Eddie could only smirk at the situation. "I guess we both have bad luck today, huh?"

"I guess so." Max replied, trying to cheer up by himself. It is what it is as they like to say.

"But now i'm hungry..." Max muttered. "Same." Eddie agreed, placing a hand on his rumbling stomach. "I wonder how much money i have left..." The blonde skimmed through his pockets, and the brunette followed suite.

"I got..." Max started, "Three dollars and seventy cents."

"Well i got two dollar and fifty." Eddie said.

The two men looked at eachother, realizing how broke they were at the moment. "Well, atleast we got five dollars and ninety cents, right?" Max asked, trying to enlighten the mood. "Well, i guess we can share..." Eddie shrugged, forcing his smile a bit.

"Damn, i kinda regret buying this..." Max muttered, looking down at the fifty centimeter crocodile-shaped bread in his hands. He was holding the upper part of the croc while Eddie held the lower part. The two men were sitting at a park bench at this moment.

"Are we even gonna finish this?" Eddie asked to himself. "Only one way to find out!" Max replied before ripping out the croc's head and eating it. Eddie followed suite, he tore the tail off before putting it in his mouth.

"Y'know? For five dollars, this is kind of worth it..." Max said while he was chewing. "Has your parents ever tell taught you about table manners?" Eddie teased, but the tone in his voice implicates that he's annoyed by the sound coming from his friend's mouth. "Yeah, like you have your own parents to teach you about that." Max retorted, but was quick to realize about what he had said to Eddie. The blonde looked a bit taken aback about what the brunette had said. "S-Sorry." Max apologized. "It's fine. I'll get over about it eventually." Eddie reassured him.

An awkward silence occurred. Neither of them not knowing what to say. Max felt bad for what he said to Eddie a few moments ago, he should've think before he spoke. Eddie on the other hand? He's trying to make the atmosphere more cheerful than more tight.

"So, uh... What should we do after this?" Eddie asked out of the blue.

"I know a harmless prank we can pull off..." Max replied with a mischievous smirk.

And what was the prank you may wonder? Carving their initials onto a tree (They also decided that their initials would be inside of a heart)!

"Pfft." Max tried to hold in a laugh as Eddie is near finished with his masterpiece. "Haha! Imagine if someone saw this in the future!" Max finally released his laughter. "Yeah. I could imagine someone seeing this and will be like 'what a sweet couple'!" Eddie also laughed his ass off.

"Hey, let's go before someone see's us." Eddie managed to speak through his laughter, and the two boys left the park.

Max decided to walk Eddie back to the ESU dorms before heading back home. On the way, they passed a flower shop, which Eddie decided to stop by.

"You like flowers?" Max asked, looking over at Eddie who is deciding on which flower to buy. "Oh, no, i'm not buying it for me. I'm buying it for a girl." Eddie explained. "A girl...?" Max repeated the last word Eddie said. "Dude i told you about her before!"

"Oh, that girl..." Max came to realization after realizing who the girl Eddie is reffering to. "Right, right..."

"Actually, let's just go. I ran out of money in my pockets anyways." Eddie said before walking through the streets again. For some reason, something snapped in Max. Something tells him that he should be his wingman and buy him the flowers so that Eddie can impress her. But at the same time, he spent his last few bucks on crocodile bread.

Or did he?

The electeicrician skimmed through the pocket of his pants and lo and behold, ge had 15 bucks in hand!

"Oh, right, i was gonna get a new volume of a comic i've been following...." He facepalmed himself internally.

Eddie was walking down the sidewalk when he heard faint footstep noises approaching. The blonde looked back and was jumpscared by Max, holding a single stem of a flower.

"For me?" Eddie asked and joked. A faint pinkish colour appeared on his cheeks. "Nah, for her." Max corrected. "I think you should go for it." Max suggested with a wink. "Playing wingman, huh?" Eddie chuckled as he admired the white flower in his hands.

"I think i'm keeping it." Eddie said mentally.

"I had fun today, Ed." Max smiled, and Eddie returned the smile to him. "I had fun as well."

"Well, see ya around." The brunette waved before going back home.

Eddie entered his dorm room. His roomate was taking a fat nap, and his snores felt like it could shake the earth at any moment. Eddie sat on his chair, still admiring the flower Max gave him. Despite what Max said, he decided to keep the flower for himself. A reminder of what a great day it was today.

He spended the night studying for tomorrow since it was a Sunday night. But Eddie can't help but steal glances at the flower with a smile.

Notes:

Bonus:

Eddie decided to bring the flower to the lab that Monday due to the clumsy and reckless nature of his roomate.

"Good afternoon, Eddie." Martha Connors greeted. "What a lovely flower you have there." She pointed out.

"Yeah, i was gonna put it in my dorm but then i remembered how reckless my roomate can be." Eddie explained. "Who was it from, then?" Martha asked, expecting to be a girl of some sort. "Oh, it's from Max!" Eddie replied.

"Max?" She repeated. "Eddie, did you and Max...?" She hesitated to even ask the question. "What? No! We didn't go on a date!" Eddie replied before Martha could even ask her question properly.

"Me and Max just hanged out for the whole day. We just went to a bookstore and ate bread together and we had fun in the park!" Eddie explained, his cheeks tinted pink.

"Eddie... That sounds like a date..."

"It is?"
