Dear Miles

Summary:

Sometimes, the people you love are half a world away.

Letters from Phoenix Wright to Miles Edgeworth in the time they were apart. (Spoilers up to Trials and Tribulations)

Notes:

This is a hard fic to sort into chapters, so rather than the number of letters being a set amount in each chapter I'll be going by word count! Any bits written in bold aren't written by Phoenix. Comments and Kudos are much appreciated and encourage me to actually work ^^; Thanks for reading!

Chapter 1: January 2002 - December 2002

Chapter Text

January 4th 2002

Dear Miles,

Happy New Year!

How are you? I hope you’re doing well. Mama said you moved away during Christmas break. Larry and I were very sad; school isn’t as fun without you, but it’s okay! We’ll manage as long as we stick together. We miss you a lot, though; Mama said she’d try and send you a letter if we wrote one- promise you’ll reply soon, okay?

Ma said something happened to Mr Edgeworth; that you’re moving to Germany with a friend because he’s gone away for a while. That sounds so cool- isn’t it cold? I think I’d be sick all the time. That’s because you’re sick, like, everyday, Nick. Edgey and I never get sick! Yeah, but still! You should wrap up! I’m sorry I never got the chance to give you back your scarf. I promise I’ll take good care of it, so come and visit and I’ll give it back!

Larry wants to tell you that he broke up with his girlfriend. Again. Do you remember her? It was Georgia from the classroom next to ours, the one who always wore her hair in pigtails. She said Larry was dumb! I mean, he doesn’t get good marks, and sometimes he does stupid things- Hey! Miles! Nick’s picking on me!

Okay, okay, sorry!

It was very mean. Larry was upset.

That bully from the year above us has been picking on us, too. It’s not fair, Edgey, you’ve gotta come back and help us! He won’t listen to Nick- you know he took his lunch money yesterday?

It’s okay! Larry is being overdramatic again. He’s not so scary. All I have to do is pretend I’m you and I can tell him to go away.

It’s not the same, though.

Yeah.

Class is harder, too. You explained everything really well. Larry is lost without you. Hey! Your grades dropped, too! Just Larry!!

We’re running out of paper, Miles. I guess we should say bye? We miss you! Here; we’re sending you some copies of the photos we took whilst you were here so you definitely can’t forget our faces. Come and visit soon, okay?

Bye Edgey!

Love from,

Larry and Phoenix xxx

Dear Miles,

Hello again! I wonder if Mama has the right address? Did you get any of our letters? It’s alright to take your time! I’ll keep waiting for a reply. I get it if you can’t think of anything to say- sometimes it takes me forever to fill the page.

Larry said he can’t come over as often to write letters anymore. I hope you don’t mind. He still misses you; we talk about you a lot. You know the other day was the one year anniversary of my class trial? Larry was the one who remembered. It’s been a full year since I became your friend. I kinda wish you were here so we could celebrate. We could have a party! Don’t tell Mama, but Mr Edgeworth’s cakes were a little tastier then hers. But they’re still great! She could have cooked us something, and we could have watched movies in my bedroom, like when you came over for my birthday. Except, maybe not horror movies, this time. Don’t lie, you were scared too. I only cried because I wasn’t afraid to admit it! That’s all!

Maybe next year?

Mr Misham said my drawings were getting better! Do you wanna see? I’ll sketch you on the back of the letter! You should send me one back, when you reply, that way we’ll match!

Hey, Miles, you will reply, right? I miss you so much

You aren’t worrying about us too much, are you? I remember you scolded us a lot. That’s okay; I know it was your way of looking after us. Don’t worry! We’re doing well! I mean, our grades are still really bad. But I’m trying my best. Maybe when you visit you can help me with my homework. How’s school in Germany? Is it harder? I bet you're doing okay, you’re super smart.

Don’t get too upset if you can’t do it right away, though! It’s okay to make mistakes. I make a lot and I’m okay! So you shouldn’t worry.

Um, Mama is calling- I guess this is it.

I’ll send another letter soon, okay? I miss you lots and lots.

Love from,

Phoenix xx

PS. I hope it’s okay that I’m using your scarf until you get back. It’s warmer than mine. It doesn’t smell like you anymore, though. That makes me kinda sad.

December 25th, 2002

Dear Miles,

Merry Christmas!

It’s been a year since you left, huh. Well, about a year, I think. Since I never got to know when exactly it was that you moved. Mama sends her love. It’s super cold over there, right? Does it snow in Germany? I hope you’re not sick.

Don’t worry about me! I’ve got a bit of a cold, but your scarf is keeping me warm.

I’m starting to think the mailman is stealing your letters, you know.

Because you wouldn’t ignore me for a whole year, right?

Or maybe he’s stealing mine! I hope not. Those letters were meant for you, not for anyone else. Or maybe the postman in Germany is really bad at his job and all my letters are ruined with rain or something before you can read them. That would explain why you haven’t replied yet. Yeah.

Christmas was good, this year. Mama got me a book called Law for Children! I bet you’d like it. It’s kinda hard to understand, but I’m trying to learn more about it so we can talk about it when you come visit. We’ll have loads to talk about. What did you get, Miles?

Hey, Miles, do you…have a new best friend? Is that why you haven’t replied? I mean, I know we promised we’d stick together forever, but I always hear adults saying forever isn’t a ‘realistic goal’. I’m not sure what to make of it. I was watching a movie and someone said you couldn’t love someone forever. That falling out of love was unevetable inevetable always going to happen. That’s not the same for friendship, right?

Because you’re still my best friend. And I still miss you. Lots. And I don’t think that’s going to change, so if you’re worried I’ll get bored or something if you reply, don’t be! I promise I won’t! I’d just really like to hear from you again!

I drew a picture of us for you. It’s… not a great Christmas present, I know, but I was worried if I sent a parcel when the mailman keeps losing my letters it would end up somewhere else. After you reply I’ll send you something super good! I’ll keep thinking about the perfect gift. Hey, maybe I can lend you Law for Children!

I have to go, Miles. Larry is coming over for Christmas dinner. It won’t be the same without you.

I’ll save you a seat at the table- I saw someone do that in a movie, too. It’s like you’re there in spirit, or something, I think they said. Mama looked kinda sad when I asked about it, but she said yes! I hope you have a wonderful Christmas in Germany, Miles. Send us pictures!

Love from,

Phoenix x

PS. The best Christmas present ever would be a visit! Hints for next year, Miles.
