Today was a normal day for Alice Woodward. She was visiting her girlfriend Ruth Fleming as she was staying with her dad for a while, which is where she always wants to be anyway. She was listening to the bustle of the busy school through her pink headphones while sitting on a seat in the winding hallway.
That’s when she felt a small hand tug on her dark pink cardigan, she looked down to see a short girl in a yellow flannel. Hannah Foster. Alice was friends with her older sister.
“Miss Alice?” Hannah murmured, her big brown eyes staring up into Alice’s own as she fidgeted with her braids.
“What do you need, Hannah?” Alice tilted her head, her blonde hair swaying in the chilly breeze of the building.
“Can I sit? Scary man.” Hannah pointed vaguely towards a group of jocks on the other side of the hallway. Alice nodded.
“Sure you can.” Alice lightly patted the spot next to her, and Hannah hopped up, a small smile on her face.
“What are you doing, weekend?” Hannah inquired, wringing her hands and staring off into a corner. Alice was aware of Hannah’s reputation in school as someone who still has an imaginary friend, or someone “crazy.” but Alice liked her, she was a sweet kid and the kindest freshman Alice knew.
“I wanted to spend time with Ruth but dad wants to have some bonding time at Watcher World or whatever.” Alice complained, switching the song In her headphones
Hannah lightly grabbed onto the older girls arm. “Don’t go. bad place. fight.” She cried, looking on the verge of tears.
Hannah yelled some other things too, the only thing Alice could make out of it was “guns.”
Alice noticed this, and smiled softly at Hannah. “Hey, shh, shh, it’s okay Hannah.” Alice handed her the headphones and her phone. “Here, listen to something calm.”
“Music always helps me calm down.” Alice admitted.
Hannah turned on a calm song, instrumental, and noticed her hair was coming unbraided. “Allie?” She turned to her.
“Yeah?” Alice ran her hand through her blonde hair, trying to untangle it from the craziness of the day.
“Rebraid my hair?” Hannah titled her head, she didn’t like the sensation of the strands of hair on the back of her neck.
“Sure, banana.” Hannah turned around, facing the wall as the music in Alice’s headphones calmed her, smiling as Alice began to braid her hair, getting it off her neck.
“Better?” Alice asked when she finished braiding Hannah’s hair, the only answer being a hug from the smaller girl.
Alice smiled down at her, hugging her back.
“You’re a good hugger, Miss Alice.” Hannah murmured
Alice laughed. “Thanks little miss.”
Today was a good day. She’d worry about Watcher World later.
