Happy Birthday

Summary:

A late birthday tribute to my favorite boy. Please enjoy.

Work Text:

It was loud.

Very loud.

But that was expected when the Bakusquad threw a party.

They went all out with the food, the decorations, the booze

But of course this was pushed to the max as it wasn't just any party they were doing today

Today was the birthday party of their very own leader, Bakugou Katsuki

The common room of the now 2-A students was packed to the brim with its own occupants and the occupants of class 2-B

Everyone was enjoying themselves, whether playing games, eating or just chatting with their fellow classmates

To no surprise, the birthday boy himself was closer to the edges of this party

Though his quirk was loud, Bakugou himself actually preferred quiet

Looking out into the common area, Bakugou found himself smiling softly

He'd be lying if he said he wasn't enjoying it

Being surrounded by all those he'd ran from hell and back with was quite nice

After years of being surrounded by people who only saw him for his quirk.

Being with people who genuinely liked him for him was a nice change of pace.

These were truly his people

And now at the ripe old age of 18 he wasn't ashamed to admit that

Perhaps he was just getting soft in his old age

Or perhaps he'd just grown accustomed to knowing that there was no point in denying the obvious

Either way he was more than happy to be here

Looking around the blonde searched for the familiar faces of his so called squad

Hanta and Jiro were near the food talking to some of class 2-B.

It seemed like they were both caught up in a very lively conversation as laugher could be heard as they talked.

Kirishima, Kaminari and Ashido on the other hand were off near the couches surrounded by others playing what looked like cards

Though likely it was more as there was a very obvious pile of money that lay in the middle of the table

Shaking his head, Bakugou let out a small chuckle

You'd have thought they'd try to be at least a bit more discrete about the fact that they were gambling

It was nice to see that some things never changed.

Casting a glance over to the kitchen, it seemed like that a good chunk of the Dekusquad were in there talking

But as red eyes scanned the group, he found that there was no Izuku in sight.

He was sure that he'd seen him earlier

Then again that had been during school.

Izuku had seemed fine at the time, just a bit stressed which the latter had told him was due to worrying about the upcoming test in Present Mics class

Of course that had ended up with Bakugou 'begrudgingly' agreeing to go over the notes and content of this unit with him later that week. To which Izuku had been quite pleased with.

Bakugou couldn't help but feel a slight pang of disappointment as he continued to look around.

After what had happened last year with him running off to be a vigilante, the greenette had promised him that he'd never miss another one of his birthdays.

But it seemed like things were turning out to be going otherwise.

Sighing, Bakugou ran a hand through his hair.

Well Izuku had a lot on his plate. He really couldn't blame him if he decided not to show up.

After the war, Izuku had been...quieter.

Perhaps it was just the fact that their time at UA was coming to end and he was going to miss it all.

But then again it perhaps wasn't.

Perhaps it was the thing that the pair had been dancing around since that day in the hospital after the war.

Perhaps it was due to the fact that Izuku couldn't bare to see them all together like this because he knew that it would all be short lived.

That sooner or later, he'd loose the embers of One For All and be unable to become a hero with the rest of them.

Bakugou prayed it wasn't for that reason. Izuku of all people should know that a quirk doesn't make a hero. That he would be a hero because that was just who he was.

Bakugou didn't notice Kirishima until the latter tapped on his shoulder.

"Bakubro, why so tense? Are you not enjoying your birthday party?"

"No, of course not. Just..."

"Midoriya isn't here?"

Had it been that obvious? Bakugou was almost tempted to ask, but decided to bite his tongue and wait for his friend to continue.

"Aww man you should have said. He's up on the roof. You should go up there and meet him. Pretty sure he said he had something special for you up there."

His body seemed to be running on autopilot as he had already started on his way up over the elevators once he heard the words 'on the roof'.

Even without turning around, he could feel the smirk Kirishima was wearing. He was going to get that rock haired idiot back for that later. Perhaps beat him into a pulp during training. Yeah that sounded good.

The elevator ride up to the roof was slow. So slow in fact that Bakugou started to get a tad antsy.

He really shouldn't be so nervous. The shitty nerd had probably just brought him a cake or something.

Getting off of the elevator, Bakugou took a deep breath before opening the door to the roof. And what he saw made his jaw drop.

It wasn't anything grand, nor particularly flashy. But it certainly did pull at his heart strings.

Fairy lights were strung around the edges of the roof, a few larger candles lining the corners. A large banner that said, 'Happy Birthday' in golden letters strung on makeshift posts made of what he could only guess was lamp posts. And in the middle stood Izuku with a cake in his hands, candles fully lit and flickering. Behind him lay a small picnic blanket with box of his favorite chocolates and what looked to be mapo tofu.

"Happy Birthday Kacchan."

In that moment all Bakugou could do was stop and stare

"I-Izuku?"

To this Izuku let out a small chuckle, shaking his head a bit before placing the cake down.

"I tried to do something that was a nice balance between simplistic, and extravagant. I know you'd likely kill me if I made a big deal. But I thought I should try to do something a bit more since I missed your last birthday. And-"

"It's perfect."

It seemed to be Izuku's turn to stop and stare, as the greenette's mouth lay open as he gazed at him.

"Thank you."

This seems to snap the latter out of his daze, as a smile grows on his features.

"Good. Wouldn't have let it be anything less."

Without thinking, Bakugou walks over to Izuku and pulls him into a tight hug. Of course the greenette doesn't fight him and just hugs him back.

"Happy Birthday Kacchan."

"Thank you for doing this Izuku."

"No problem. Now let's eat, I know how much you'd hate for the mapo tofu to get cold."

"You know it. Did you make it yourself?"

Izuku shifted his head away from Bakugou's shoulder to look him in his eyes, a faint blush on his face.

"Yeah. I had to ask Auntie about a million times how to make it. But I eventually got it right."

"Sounds about right, wouldn't expect anything less."

"What does that mean?! Are you saying that I'm a bad cook?"

From there a swell of laugher filled the air as the pair wrestled around, light hearted jabs flying left and right.

This was the best birthday he could ever ask for.
