Bruce had lost. He lost his parents. He lost his best friend Harvey who became Two-Face. And now, at 19 years of age, Bruce Thomas Wayne has lost to the Joker.
The Joker had taken over Gotham with the use of his Joker Venom, forcing everyone to believe that if they convinced Batman to reveal his identity once and for all that he would stop his carnage. And so the Gothamites who hadn't been affected by the Joker Venom tried to catch The Dark Knight and make him take off the mask. It had gotten to the stage where people were dying over the matter. Bruce had eventually given into Joker's demands and laid down the mask. Bruce had donated majority of his money to healthcare to help those who were harmed in the crossfire.
Alfred and him were forced out of Gotham now that The Joker and the rest of the rogue gallery knew who he was, and they were now on their way to Pelican Town to start over.
