Chapter Text
It had been roughly two weeks since the battle with the Red Death. Hiccup was trying to enjoy his breakfast at the great hall with his friends and their newly trained dragons. He stared down at the table and clenched his eyes shut. Ever since the battle, Hiccup had had a hard time sleeping at night due to the plague of constant nightmares about what happened and the phantom aches in his leg he'd received almost on a constant. Every time he closed his eyes, it was like he was right back in the fight. Riding on the back of Toothless as the Red Death followed them down a vertical drop through the air; Toothless's prosthetic tail fin in flames and on the verge of falling apart entirely.
He remembered it all so clearly, as if it had only just happened. He remembered the sound of his heartbeat, beating rapidly as he and Toothless rapidly descended from the clouds. He remembered the loud roar of the dragon that flew just inches behind them. He remembered the smell of smoke and fire as the prosthetic tail fin continued burning away from the flames. He remembered Toothless flying over the dragon to try and escape the flames that chased them when the dragon hit the ground and practically exploded. He remembered the fear that washed over him when the prosthetic tail fin finally burnt away leaving him and Toothless completely helpless as the giant bludgeon-like tail came barreling towards them. He remembered Toothless trying to push them out of the way and then...everything went dark. When he woke up, he was resting in his home with Toothless but something wasn't right. Something was missing. His leg. Hiccup was stunned and had nothing to say. He just did his best to walk it off, with the help of Toothless, and then forget about the whole ordeal. However, that would be easier said than done.
"Hiccup!"
Hiccup snapped his eyes open and looked up to see Astrid hovering over him.
"Are you okay? I've been trying to get your attention for the last two minutes." She said in an almost concerned tone.
"Yea, I'm fine. Just a little tired." Hiccup responded with a yawn.
"Rough night?"
Hiccup nodded his head slightly and looked back at the table.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" Astrid asked hesitantly.
"It's nothing, don't worry about it. I'm fine." Hiccup replied with yet another yawn.
Astrid didn't respond. She just looked at Hiccup with concern as she had never seen him act like this before. Then again, she knew that it would do no good to try and push it considering how stubborn he was. She just sighed and walked out of the great hall with Stormfly.
I'm fine. Hiccup thought to himself one last time before he and Toothless got up and left.
Just fine.
