5 Times Shadow Helped Sonic (and Pretended He Didn't Care) + 1 Time He Admitted It

Summary:

"Sonic blinked, stunned. Then, a slow smile spread across his face. “Knew it.”

“Don’t make me regret saying it,” Shadow warned."

TLDR: five times Shadow saved Sonic without admitting he cared—and the one time he finally did.

1.

The afternoon sun blazed over Station Square, baking the streets in a golden haze. Sonic’s nose twitched as the unmistakable scent of chili dogs wafted through the air. It was a siren’s call after a long morning of saving the day. His stomach growled as he skidded to a halt in front of his favorite stand.

“One chili dog with extra everything!” Sonic chirped, patting his quills to find his wallet. A chill ran down his spine as his hands came up empty.

“Oh no,” he groaned, slumping against the counter. “I left my wallet at Tails’ place!”

The vendor, a burly man with kind eyes, chuckled. “Sorry, kid, no tab today. Business has been slow.”

Sonic sighed dramatically, resting his chin on his hand as he stared longingly at the pile of freshly made chili dogs behind the glass. The sizzle of meat and the rich aroma felt like mockery.

“Pathetic.”

The familiar voice was smooth yet laced with its usual mix of irritation and amusement. Sonic turned to see Shadow standing a few feet away, arms crossed, crimson eyes boring into him.

“Oh great,” Sonic muttered, forcing a grin. “Here to rub salt in the wound, Shads?”

Shadow stepped forward, pulling out a sleek wallet and handing the vendor a few crisp bills. Before Sonic could process what was happening, a hot, steaming chili dog was thrust into his hands.

“Wait, seriously?” Sonic blinked.

“You’re an embarrassment,” Shadow said, tone flat.

“Hey!” Sonic took a bite of the chili dog, savoring the spicy kick. “You didn’t have to—”

“I didn’t,” Shadow interrupted. “I just couldn’t stand watching you make a fool of yourself.”

Sonic’s grin widened as he watched Shadow turn away, his movements as smooth and deliberate as ever. “Admit it, you care!”

Shadow didn’t respond, but just before he disappeared around the corner, Sonic caught a glimpse of the faintest smirk on his face.

Inside Eggman’s fortress, chaos reigned. Sonic darted through the labyrinthine hallways, clutching a glowing Chaos Emerald in one hand. The walls vibrated with the hum of machinery, and red lights cast eerie shadows across the corridors.

“Too easy,” Sonic muttered, dodging a set of laser traps. Just as he rounded a corner, a squad of advanced robots emerged, their weapons locking onto him.

“Alright, let’s do this,” Sonic said, charging forward in a blur of blue energy.

He managed to take down two robots with a Spin Dash, but the numbers weren’t in his favor. A laser grazed his side, knocking him off balance. As he scrambled to regain his footing, a sleek robot aimed its weapon directly at him.

A crimson streak cut through the air. Shadow appeared in a flash, Chaos Spear in hand. The robots barely had time to react before they were reduced to smoldering heaps of metal.

Sonic stared, wide-eyed. “Shadow? Not that I’m not grateful, but what are you doing here?”

Shadow scoffed, holding out the Chaos Emerald he’d snatched from one of the fallen robots. “Saving your reckless hide, apparently.”

Sonic grinned, taking the emerald. “You know, you could just admit you like having me around.”

Shadow didn’t dignify that with a response, but his lingering presence as Sonic caught his breath spoke volumes.

The rehearsal hall echoed with the sounds of warm-ups, but Sonic’s clarinet produced little more than strained squeaks. He frowned, glaring at the sheet music in front of him.

“This is impossible,” he muttered, poking at the unfamiliar black notes.

“You’re hopeless.”

Sonic turned to see Shadow standing in the doorway, arms crossed.

“Let me guess,” Sonic said, smirking. “Tails sent you to babysit me?”

“Something like that,” Shadow replied, walking over. “Move.”

Over the next hour, Shadow sat beside Sonic, guiding him through the basics of rhythm and timing. Despite his bluntness, his instructions were clear and patient.

“You’re surprisingly good at this,” Sonic admitted, after managing to play a simple melody.

Shadow hesitated, his gaze softening. “Maria loved music. She taught me some.”

For once, Sonic didn’t tease. Instead, he offered a genuine smile. “Thanks, Shads. This means a lot.”

“Just don’t make me regret it,” Shadow muttered, though the corners of his mouth twitched upward.

The battlefield was littered with debris as Sonic tried to stand, clutching his twisted ankle.

“I’m fine,” he insisted, wincing.

Shadow appeared beside him, frowning. “You can barely move.”

“Still faster than you,” Sonic quipped.

Shadow rolled his eyes before scooping Sonic up in one swift motion.

“Seriously?” Sonic groaned, crossing his arms. “This is so embarrassing.”

“Good,” Shadow retorted. “Maybe you’ll think twice before rushing in unprepared.”

Despite his complaints, Sonic found the steady rhythm of Shadow’s stride oddly comforting. “You’re not bad at this whole ‘hero’ thing,” he muttered.

Shadow didn’t respond, but his grip tightened slightly, as if silently reassuring him.

The beach was bathed in moonlight, the waves lapping gently against the shore. Sonic sat alone, staring at the stars, his thoughts heavy.

“Brooding doesn’t suit you,” Shadow said, approaching from behind.

Sonic glanced back, offering a weak smile. “Didn’t think you’d notice.”

Shadow sat beside him, silent for a moment. “What’s wrong?”

Sonic hesitated before speaking. “Just... thinking about the past. People I’ve lost.”

Shadow’s gaze softened. “You’re not the only one.”

The two sat in companionable silence, the sound of the waves filling the gaps between them.

“Thanks, Shads,” Sonic said eventually.

Shadow nodded, his expression unreadable but his presence steady.

Angel Island was peaceful under the stars, the Master Emerald glowing faintly in the background. Sonic found Shadow standing at the edge of the platform, his posture rigid.

“Yo, Shads,” Sonic called. “What’s with the midnight brooding?”

Shadow turned slightly, his gaze distant. “Why are you always so curious?”

“Because I care,” Sonic replied, stepping closer. “Why do you always help me, even when you pretend you don’t want to?”

Shadow hesitated before speaking, his voice low. “Because I care too.”

Sonic blinked, stunned. Then, a slow smile spread across his face. “Knew it.”

“Don’t make me regret saying it,” Shadow warned.

“Never,” Sonic promised, the sincerity in his voice unmistakable.

As they stood together under the stars, their bond felt unbreakable, a quiet acknowledgment of something deeper than words.
