Kyomi hugs Reki
“Damn it!” Koyomi Kyan stumbled off the board. It rolled aimlessly towards the lion statues in the Kyan's backyard before getting kicked up and captured by a familiar figure.
“Cool it with the language before Mom hears and blames me!” Reiki grabbed the nose of Koyomi’s board and investigated the scuff marks on the bridge. “You seem to be working hard for once.”
Koyomi scowled. “I bet Miya I could learn this stupid kickflip into a grind by the end of the week and it’s driving me crazy.”
Reiki raised his eyebrows, causing his headband to push his hair even higher, almost like he gained half an inch of height. “First of all, why are you making bets and Miya? And second, when did you two get so friendly?”
“None of your business Slime,” Koyomi pouted. Reki gripped her board tighter and stuck out his tongue.
“Ugh, I knew introducing you two was a bad idea. But nooooo, Langa had to make me introduce you two because it ‘was polite’, and now it’s come back to bite me in the ass. I’m going to whoop him in the next beef I swear…”
“Earth to Reki,” Koyomi moved forward, waving her hand in her brother’s face. “You seem to be spacing out there, big brother? And can I have my board back? Not that it’ll help, but I really want to try and nail this before tomorrow or I owe Miya strawberry shortcake for a month.”
“Hey, you said you’d only bake that for Gran!” Reki was outraged. Koyomi shrugged and reached out to grab her board. Reki had painted a strawberry field on the base and she didn’t want to admit how much she loved it. She was 13 now, it wasn’t cool to tell your big brother how talented he was.
Gross.
Reki held her board out of her reach.
“Hey!”
“I can’t have you baking shortcake for Miya before I get a piece.” He grinned. He lowered the board and placed it on her chest. “So let’s get to work.”
“Huh?” Koyomi clutched the board tight to her chest.
“I'll help you nail the trick. He showed me how to do it a while back. So, show me what you got. Half the fun of skating is working together to nail the trick. So let’s show that little shit that he can’t mess with the Kyans.”
“I’m telling Mom you cursed in front of me.” Koyomi dropped her board to the ground and threw one of the lollipops she kept in her pocket at Reki. He caught it with nimble fingers and winked. “What Mom doesn’t know won’t hurt her. Now do we have a deal?” Reki held out his hand.
Koyomi shook it. "Deal."
—------
The board hit the ground smoothly after Koyomi finally nailed the kickflip grind after several attempts and much encouragement and tips from Reki.
“I did it!” She said in awe, her words barely audibly between all the whoops from her older brother.
“Hell yeah you did!” Reki pounded his fist in the air and jumped forward to give his sister a high-five. Koyomi jumped toward him, wrapping her hands around his waist and pulling him into the tightest hug she could.
“Thanks, Reki,” She mumbled against his jumper.
She felt him soften beneath her hold. “Any time, sis.”
She pulled back to look at him and smiled. “You’re pretty cool, you know that?”
Reki scratched his cheek and couldn’t meet her eyes. Embarrassed after realising what she had done, Koyomi released him and took a spare lollipop from her pocket. Popping it in her mouth in victory, she grabbed her board and raced back toward the house.
“If you tell anyone I said that, I’ll deny it and tell everyone you have a shrine to Cherry Blossom in your closet.” She called over her shoulder.
“I don’t have a shrine–”
“They don’t know that,” She grinned.
She had the world’s best older brother, and she was most definitely keeping that secret to herself.
After all, what are little sisters for?
