Chapter 1: Knowing the monster

Chapter Text

Who is Natsuki Subaru?

The existence of this popular name had always been a mystery.

Everything about him seemed strange, even anomalous: his clothes, mannerisms, expressions, appearance and behaviour. Everything.

All of these details could have had answers if he revealed more about his origins, but Subaru was always very evasive about this topic.

Even Emilia, the person he served as her knight, knew very little about him before he joined her Camp.

All Subaru told her was that he came from an island to the east of the world called Japan, yet this answer raised even more doubts, as there was no territory east of Lugunica.

This was unfortunate. She trusted him blindly and saw him every day, yet she couldn’t claim to truly know who he was.

Quite paradoxical, considering the relationship they shared.

But, above all, the most mysterious things about Natsuki Subaru were his achievements and how he managed to accomplish them.

Emilia had only known him for a year, yet he had accomplished a whole series of legendary feats that no one in 400 years of history, including all the Sword Saints, had achieved in just two weeks.

To ordinary people, this timeframe might seem short, but for her, it was a very long time to be with someone who cared for her, which is why she was so confused when she met him.

She hadn’t done anything special for him, yet he saved her life repeatedly and claimed to love her.

A baseless sentiment; that’s how Emilia judged it.

She still cared for her knight, but it was difficult for her to understand him.

How did he do all of this?

How did he manage to do all those things, to plan so meticulously, and always know what to do?

Various people gave their own answers to who Natsuki Subaru was.

A legendary hero forgotten because of Gluttony, a man whose only distinctive trait was his timing, a reckless madman who didn’t care for his own life, a clown, an exiled warrior from the Empire of Vollachia, an incredibly farsighted strategist.

They were all wrong.

However, when they learned the truth about who Natsuki Subaru really was, seeing all his successes and failures, they were shocked by the revelation.

At first, they saw a cheerful, kind-hearted boy with big dreams but few abilities to achieve them.

Then they saw a great hero, perhaps the greatest since the Calamity, capable of performing the most majestic feats despite being powerless.

The life perspectives of those in that Theater of Despair were shattered when they saw who they were dealing with.

Many found themselves filled with enormous affection for him, while others even discovered a new feeling, love, for the boy with raven hair, but almost all felt deep sadness and bitterness.

A sea of tears was shed for Natsuki Subaru, who was completely unaware that his greatest secret had been discovered.

He was, without a doubt, an exemplary case of nobility and altruism, unlike anything seen before, despite all the suffering he had faced.

But they still didn’t know there was much more behind it. They hadn’t yet seen the bigger picture.

They thought they had abandoned all forms of selfishness and naivety after witnessing the events of Arc 4.

Oh, how wrong they were, because afterward, they no longer saw a past that hadn’t happened. The guardian showed them the future—no, many horrible futures.

The fact that even a year after Natsuki Subaru’s suffering, it wasn’t over yet was a cause of great dismay for the members of all the camps, who realized that those two weeks of pure hell wouldn’t be a terribly dark chapter in Subaru’s life but a constant in his achievements.

Many thought things would change after that year of peace, which seemed like paradise for the knight from another world, but unfortunately, this wouldn’t be the case if they hadn’t seen Arcs 5 and 6.

These additional visions cemented in the minds of those present a feeling of devotion and affection, as well as an almost unhealthy desire to protect him, to make his life better.

They thought they now had the power to make the boy’s fate a bit brighter.

But then they saw other things… some that hadn’t happened and could no longer happen, but others that still represented a possibility.

They saw with their own eyes parallel futures, what would have happened if Natsuki Subaru had made different choices.

And once again, all the certainties that had formed in the hearts of those who knew him were shattered like shards of glass.

Many minds were broken, shattered, disfigured, stunned, plunged completely into the abyss of madness.

Some even tried to kill themselves, but the theater’s guardian intervened and stabilized everyone’s minds to at least the level where they could still help Natsuki Subaru.

However, the damage was done: the heroic image of Natsuki Subaru still existed, but now it was compromised by other images that were its exact opposite.

A Sin archbishop, the Purge King, a mass murderer, someone capable of weaponizing death, someone who had abandoned almost everyone.

Now these, too, were valid answers to the question “Who is Natsuki Subaru?”

A new, unlikely feeling crept into the hearts of those who now knew the truth, burdened with the weight of awareness: fear.

They were frightened by the existence of Natsuki Subaru, a small man capable of achieving impossible things, both good and evil.

They were frightened by the alternative versions of themselves. Some had become true monsters, others were dead, and others still didn’t know whom to trust.

Now that they fully grasped the implications of Subaru’s ability, they were convinced they shouldn’t have known—that it was something beyond them. They regretted it completely.

But it was already too late.

In this chaos of absolute anguish and terror, one certainty remained: Natsuki Subaru was no longer just a person to be loved, but also someone to be feared and watched.

And, for some, a menace to eradicate.

“…Guys? Something’s wrong?”

“...”

“...”

Subaru had no idea what was going on.

Just a moment before, he, Emilia, and Beatrice were peacefully chatting about their plans once they arrived in Priestella, but suddenly the carriage filled with silence.

The faces of the half-elf and the spirit were blank, vacant, as if their minds were elsewhere, even though they had been cheerful and joyful just seconds earlier. He had never seen them with such an expression before.

He took a few seconds to look at them more intently to see if anything was out of place.

It could have been some kind of hypnotic attack, like the one Ram had used on him when they were fighting Petelgeuse.

However, as he was checking on them, he heard a faint thud outside the carriage.

“-Hmph!”

Subaru quickly opened the window to peek outside and see what had caused the sound.

It was Garfiel. His body was sprawled face-down on the ground, as if he had slipped on a banana peel.

It would have been a scene straight out of a cartoon if not for the serious implications: with Garfiel down, their main line of defense was out of commission. This was no good at all.

Luckily, he was unharmed, but he had likely fallen under the same spell that affected Beatrice and Emilia. They were truly under attack!

There wasn’t a second to lose.

Subaru quickly moved to the driver’s seat and opened the hatch to speak with the driver.

“Otto! Stop the carriage right away! Garfiel is down!”

“A-ah! W-what did you say, Natsuki-san?”

“Stop the carriage!”

“A-ah! Y-yes!”

Otto immediately did as Subaru told him and halted the carriage.

“What’s going on, Natsuki-san!?”

“We’re probably under attack. Are you alright, Otto? You look pale…”

“Y-yes, don’t worry about me, Natsuki-bleergh!”

“O-Otto?!”

The poor merchant didn’t even have time to finish the honorific before his breakfast spilled onto the grass.

Despite the vomiting and slight shudders, Subaru wasn’t sure if the merchant had been affected by the same hypnotic effects.

At least he was fully conscious, unlike the other passengers.

After confirming this, the black-haired knight lifted the spirit onto his shoulders and stepped out to go check on Garfiel; but as he did so, he heard the little girl panting heavily beside him, as if she was hyperventilating.

Her tiny body was trembling, her hands were freezing, and after a few seconds, he felt his shoulder getting wet.

“…Beako?”

“S-Subaru… Subaru! Subaru! Subaru! Subaruuu!”

He began to hear his partner whisper his name, then gradually raise her voice, until she was screaming desperately.

He had no idea why, but in that moment, Beatrice was having a full-blown hysterical attack out of nowhere, clutching onto him tightly as if he would disappear at any second.

Subaru had never seen her this distressed, not even when she was still a recluse.

What the hell was going on? Was she under hypnosis or not?

“Beako, I’m here! Everything’s alright! Nothing happened to me!”

“Betty is so sorry…! Betty is so sorry…! Betty is so sorry…! Betty is so sorry…!”

“What are you apologizing for, Beako? You can tell me what’s wrong later, but now isn’t the time! We’re under attack!”

“WHO?! WHO’S ATTACKING YOU, SUBARU?!”

“Huh?!”

In an instant, after his failed attempt to pull her out of her crisis, dozens of crystals surrounded the knight-spirit duo, so she could protect her contractor from any direction. Including the carriage and Garfiel.

This was definitely a reaction Subaru hadn’t expected.

Usually, Beatrice was the calmest and most composed person in the Emilia camp during a battle. Her vast knowledge and intelligence allowed her to formulate strategies, analyze situations, and help Subaru stay focused.

Now, however, it seemed that the twintail-haired girl had decided to resort to brute force to solve her problems; something they never did considering their mana reserve had always been very limited since they made the contract.

“Beako, what are you doing?! We need to help Garfiel!”

“No, Subaru! That murderous tiger doesn’t need your help!”

“…What are you talking about?”

“You’re always getting hurt, I suppose! Betty can never do anything to keep you safe and prevent bad things from happening to you! Betty isn’t worthy of being with someone amazing like you, in fact! Betty is so, so sorry!”

After shouting until her voice gave out, the poor spirit—or rather, the poor little girl—resumed sobbing so heavily that she might have choked if Subaru hadn’t hugged her.

Soon, the Japanese boy felt his chest dampen with her bitter tears, and after only about thirty seconds, he heard his Beako lightly snoring. At that point, the massive El Minya that Beatrice had summoned to protect Subaru dissolved into particles of light.

“Beako…?”

What the hell is going on?! Ah shit, Garfiel!

Subaru really wished he had the time to stop and think things through to understand what was happening, but there were too many things to do first, including checking on Garfiel.

He hoped that at least Garfiel was in fighting shape, otherwise, he’d have to send Otto rushing to Priestella and pray that nothing went wrong.

When he reached him, he had the chance to assess his condition.

He wasn’t doing too well: he’d been down for a few minutes, yet he hadn’t gotten back up, staring at the ground. He was on his knees with his arms stretched out, as if preparing to start push-ups alongside him during morning muscle-wake exercises.

And yet, as he approached him to help him up…

“Garfiel! Are you alright?!”

“Don’t ya’ dare touch me, damn it!”

“-Argh!”

His body moved at a speed Subaru had never seen before. In the blink of an eye, he managed to scratch Subaru’s left leg and get back on his feet, in a fighting stance.

However, despite Garfiel’s quick reflexes and experience as a fighter, his body was shaking nervously, clearly terrified.

Subaru painfully leaned down to try and staunch the wound with his hands, and after a few seconds, he met Garfiel’s gaze but no longer recognized him.

Don’t misunderstand—Subaru had seen Garfiel frightened before. In the Sanctuary, Garfiel had been afraid of him, and a bit of Emilia too, but most of all he feared what they represented during those days of hell: the possibility of facing his past and venturing into the outside world.

At first, Garfiel wasn’t ready for that prospect. Despite this, the blond warrior always showed grit and a fierce determination to protect the Sanctuary from the unknown.

But now, in that look, Subaru saw no tenacity, strength, or courage. He saw only genuine, deep terror, as if Garfiel felt his life was seriously threatened by someone as insignificant as Subaru.

Before, Subaru might have dismissed the Sanctuary Shield’s attack as a mistake or an error induced by hypnosis; but when he looked into the eyes of someone he saw as a younger brother, he realized he was wrong. Garfiel’s fear was directed at him.

However, Subaru didn’t know that Garfiel had seen and heard something else, a vision his horror-stricken mind had conjured up.

When he saw a figure approaching, he didn’t recognize him as his Captain.

The person standing in front of him wore worn, sand-stained travel clothes, had white hair, a scar on his forehead, and only one functioning eye.

He heard someone speaking, but the sound was muffled, unclear.

Yet, he heard one fatal question perfectly:

“Hey, do you know my name?”

...

...

...

And after that enigmatic question, the spectral figure gave a cold smile—the ugliest, most twisted smile Garfiel had ever seen, almost mocking.

That man had every reason to be feared, for he had stained his hands with the blood of tens of thousands of people, including his own.

Faced with such a situation, how could Garfiel not be afraid?

His body, in a perfect, strange, morbid harmony with his mind, reacted defensively, like the helpless little kitten he was, saving him from the inevitable threat of that question.

So, it was justified, wasn’t it? He was only thinking of his own well-being, his own safety. He hadn’t done anything wrong this time, right?

A second later, Garfiel Tinzel returned to reality and got the answer he was looking for: he had made a mistake. Once again, as always, he had made a mistake; because where Natsuki Subaru failed, Garfiel Tinzel failed as well.

When he realized he had once again hurt his savior, he felt his heart plunge into a deep abyss.

He needed to make up for his error, and he needed to do it right away.

However, the association between Natsuki Subaru and danger was now etched in the subconscious of the half-human teenager; no matter how much he tried to act as if it wasn’t so.

“C-Captain!!”

He immediately ran to the boy, who was holding his injured right leg in pain, and reached out his hand—the same hand that had wounded his Captain—to heal him.

After about ten seconds, the wound was gone, leaving only a tear in the pants of the black-haired boy.

“Garfiel, what was that?! Did you feel attacked or something?”

Yes. “No, Captain, it wasn’t that. My amazin’ self was just… nervous cuz I tripped, that’s all.”

Subaru maintained an expression of doubt mixed with concern.

It was true that Garfiel tended to be rather volatile with his emotions, but in the past year, he had never dared to offend Subaru in any way. On the contrary, he constantly showed a reverential attitude, almost to the point of worship.

Furthermore, Garfiel has always been a terrible liar, especially to someone like Subaru, who was so used to sweeping things under the rug.

At that moment, Garfiel wore the expression of someone lying through his teeth.

It was definitely a strange reaction, but Subaru decided not to push: it wasn’t the right time to be distracted trying to understand why Garfiel was so upset.

With Priestella so close, it was best to take a practical approach.

“We’ll think about this later. For now, I need you to guard the carriage. I’m not sure, but there’s a good chance we’re under some kind of hypnotic attack.”

At this statement, a dangerous red aura surrounded Garfiel’s body, and he took on a furious, almost insane expression. Subaru hadn’t seen him this angry, even in the many failed loops at the Sanctuary.

Then, he cracked his knuckles ominously, ready to crush anyone who stood against them.

“Captain. Gimme the order, and I’ll make sure they all dead.”

“Eh?! No, no, we need to protect Emilia all the way to Priestella! You and I will handle the defense while Otto drives the carriage with Beatrice and Emilia inside!”

“A-ah! Y-yeah, alright, Captain.”

In an instant, Garfiel’s murderous attitude disappeared, replaced by a submissive demeanor, the complete opposite of what he had shown just moments before.

After organizing a defense plan, Garfiel and Subaru—still holding his sleeping spirit in his arms—ran to the carriage, but they were almost immediately stopped by another unexpected sight: Emilia had woken up and was standing at the entrance of the carriage.

Yet, the exact moment Subaru’s pupils registered her image, he immediately sensed that something was wrong with her as well.

Physically, she was unharmed, but her beautiful white dress was stained with a disgusting green liquid, which had also left a trail on her face, on the left side of her mouth.

The pupils of her amethyst eyes were completely constricted, a sign of the absolute panic consuming her, her mouth trembled, her eyebrows moved in almost spasmodic motions, her body language was fragile, and the color of her pale skin was almost entirely drained.

Subaru wanted to ask her what had shaken her so deeply, even worse than when she faced the Trial of the Past in the Sanctuary; but when their eyes met, the half-elf wore an expression of pure terror for a couple of seconds before fainting, falling face-first to the ground, just like Garfiel.

“Emilia!!!”

If Subaru had been very anxious before, now he was starting to panic, which gave him more energy than ever to run toward his beloved lady.

In just a few seconds, Subaru covered the 50 meters separating them (which would have set a new personal record in the obstacle course he’d devised for himself, though clearly, this was not the time to think about athletic achievements).

“Emilia! Emilia, please, answer me! Hey, Emilia! God, please, don’t do this to me!”

When he reached her delicate body lying on the ground, he carefully set Beatrice down on a carriage seat and then turned Emilia over with the utmost care, making sure there were no visible injuries.

God, he hoped with all his heart that she hadn’t been cursed like he had been at the mansion, but at first glance, all the symptoms were there…

“Garfiel! Take Emilia into the carriage, check if she’s been cursed, and if she has, use everything you have to heal her! I don’t want to see a single scratch, got it!?”

“Y-Yes!”

Perhaps Subaru had gone a bit overboard in that last moment, but this was no time to be overly polite or delay. Something, anything, needed to be done to protect everyone.

For this reason, reluctantly, he had to leave Emilia in Garfiel’s care to alert Otto to prepare Patrasche to race full speed to Priestella.

“Otto! Emilia and Beako can’t defend themselves; we need to get to Priestella as fast as possible! When Garfiel finishes loading Emilia, tell Patrasche to go as fast as she can, and ask every animal you see to keep an eye on the perimeter!”

“O-Okay!”

Subaru didn’t even notice Otto’s scared, trembling expression, but he immediately carried out the commands.

After what felt like an hour to Subaru but was really only a minute, they set off at maximum speed.

The travel time was reduced from the expected two hours to just half an hour, during which the tension was so thick it could be cut with a knife.

Subaru could feel the veins in his head ready to burst from the stress.

During this time, they kept their guard up as much as possible, with Garfiel watching the perimeter from the roof, Subaru checking the interior and rear of the carriage, and Otto driving at full speed, aided by various insects he found along the way.

The only two fortunate aspects of this dramatic situation were that Emilia and Beatrice had just fainted and the terrain was completely flat and devoid of any trees, making it hard for an attacker to hide.

However, for the rest of the journey, no one appeared to attack or prolong the effects of the hypnosis or whatever had just happened.

For Subaru, this was a positive development, yet it made no sense. What had caused the recent events?

Otto and Garfiel, the only others besides Subaru still conscious, though visibly shaken by the experience, instead had an idea of what had happened.

It was due to their sudden return from the theater hall.

The entity that had kidnapped them and taken them to that theater had returned them to their bodies at that exact moment.

For Subaru, not even a second had passed since their minds were taken against their will; while for them, several hours, perhaps days, had passed.

During that indefinite time, they had been forced against their will to see not only Natsuki Subaru’s memories since he was transported to their world through a strange metia called “screen,” but also his dark future, along with parallel worlds to theirs.

All of this happened without allowing them a single pause to process the events.

An absolutely inhuman and shocking experience, which at some point no one wanted to endure any longer.

Even Reinhard, the fucking Sword Saint, practically a god-like figure, reached a point where he couldn’t take it anymore; however, he was prevented from resisting in any way.

Some even tried to commit suicide while watching, overwhelmed by the guilt weighing on their consciences; but they were saved (or condemned), treated, or forcibly restrained.

The only reason they all managed to retain a shred of sanity, akin to Subaru’s, was because the unknown entity intervened and stabilized their souls to prevent them from going insane.

For this reason, Garfiel and Otto were more than certain they weren’t under attack (though they had suffered a grave offense unbeknownst to Subaru), yet they remained alert because Subaru might have always returned by death.

With Beatrice already unconscious, she wouldn’t be able to vouch for him at that moment (not that she was clear-headed enough to do so).

They hoped with all their hearts that they were just being paranoid about this possibility, but if they had learned anything, it was that their caution had been practically nonexistent until now.

They had all been utterly incompetent.

After that incredibly nerve-wracking journey, Emilia’s royal carriage reached the gates of Priestella.

The reception that awaited them was just one more in the surprisingly long list of unexpected challenges Subaru faced that day.

In particular, the strangest thing was the behavior of the knights.

Certainly, Priestella was known for its especially strict border controls beyond the walls.

And yet, not only were there simple knights guarding the area, but also dozens of members of the Royal Army, all looking particularly stern and intimidating.

Furthermore, looking around, Subaru noticed that many of the carriages were turning back, and the number of people entering was almost negligible compared to those leaving.

In short, they were letting almost no one in, except after extremely strict inspections.

Could they somehow have known about their meeting with Anastasia, even though it was supposed to be secret, prompting them to increase security measures?

To clear this doubt, Subaru decided he would ask the person involved directly later.

For the moment, he had to prioritize Emilia’s safety. Perhaps they could find a good healer inside Priestella; or at least, that’s what the knight from another world hoped.

The problem was that they couldn’t afford to go through the usual inspections, given the urgency of the situation.

It wasn’t the best thing to do, but they had to skip the line.

“Otto, please, can you ask a Royal Knight if there’s a good healer here in Priestella? You can tell them we’re transporting a royal candidate and that we need help.”

“Oh, sure thing, Natsuki-san...”

After replying affirmatively, Otto looked around for someone approachable.

He spotted one guard who seemed fairly flexible, young, and of apparently good nature.

"Excuse me?"

"Good morning, do you need something?"

"Yes, thank you. I’m Otto Suwen, Minister of Internal Affairs for the Emilia Camp."

At the introduction, the young man's face hardened considerably.

"Otto Suwen, could you hand over your documents for verification? If you are who you claim to be and aren’t deceiving us, we need the Emilia Camp immediately. We’re following orders from the Anastasia Camp."

"Yes, we figured as much..."

"No, you might have figured it out, because I certainly didn’t!"

The person who made this exclamation was none other than Subaru, looking confused and seeking answers.

"Hello, I’m Natsuki Subaru, knight of the Emilia Camp. I’d like to know, if possible, why the Royal Knights are requesting our presence on behalf of Anastasia. Has something happened?"

At Subaru's introduction, the other knight, after checking Otto’s document, respectfully bowed and answered Subaru’s somewhat overemphatic question with polite formality.

"It’s an honor to meet you in person, sir, though I would have preferred it under different circumstances. Nothing has happened yet, fortunately, but Lady Anastasia has raised the alarm to tighten security and ensure that no one enters except you, in order to prevent an attack."

"…An attack by whom?"

"Those are confidential details available only to royal candidates."

"Wait, are there other royal candidates besides Anastasia and Emilia here in Priestella?"

At this question, the young guard nodded.

"Exactly. All five candidates are here."

Subaru felt quite relieved upon hearing this information. Not only would he be able to see his friends, but this way, he could have Emilia treated by Felix, since Crusch would logically be in Priestella as well.

He had no idea of what awaited him soon.

"Alright. Could you possibly escort us to Anastasia as soon as possible? We need a doctor to ensure that all passengers are in good health, and she might have someone available."

"Certainly, as you wish."

After a few minutes of preparation, a group of sixteen knights and the carriage entered the city gates.

The city looked truly beautiful. The houses were colorful, the squares well-maintained, and the water in the canals as clear as the bright sky on that magnificent day.

Despite this, Subaru couldn’t shake an increasing sense of unease as they traveled; the streets were empty due to Anastasia’s order to have all civilians barricade themselves indoors.

It dangerously reminded him of that loop when it started snowing, where there was no one left… when he… he…

If he were in the kararagian merchant’s place, Subaru wasn’t sure if he would have adopted the same strategy.

If there were enemies, they were surely aware by now that Anastasia knew of their planned attack.

This was a problem, as they’d lost the element of surprise in exchange for a tighter defense. Moreover, since there was no one around, their carriage was the only sign of life in the city, making them an ideal target for an ambush.

The young man from Earth had to trust that Anastasia’s precautions would effectively prevent any harm.

"Natsuki-san, we’re here."

Otto (to Subaru’s internal relief) interrupted his dark train of thought by announcing their arrival at the Muse Company, the city’s temporary defense headquarters.

Since they had entered the city, the merchant’s complexion had become almost cadaverous with how pale he was.

The situation did seem critical, it was true, but Otto had shown courage during the Sanctuary events, so Subaru thought he’d be able to keep his cool more easily.

He didn’t know that Otto’s unease was due to the fact that he was practically visiting his own grave—along with the graves of tens of thousands of drowned civilians—in the company of his own killer.

Not that he had any right to feel that way; Otto, too, had betrayed Natsuki Subaru in his moment of need during the events of Arc 3.

Yet, even knowing the goodness of the Natsuki Subaru who was accompanying him, his subconscious was screaming at him to run, to get as far away from the danger as possible, because the person who would someday become the Hero of Priestella and his killer could very well be the same person, no matter how much he denied it.

He had no idea how Subaru could see the faces of people who had killed him every day and still manage to smile. Surely, Otto couldn’t do the same, despite everything Subaru had done for him.

It was an unfair comparison, and he knew it, but his mind made it anyway.

After disembarking safely from the carriage and transporting the dazed Emilia and Beatrice inside the building to the medical wing, one of the guards went to announce the arrival of the Emilia Camp.

A few minutes later, the messenger returned and escorted them to the meeting room.

As they reached the wooden door, Otto turned to Subaru with a visibly uneasy expression.

“E-Erm… N-Natsuki-san… could you wait a minute before entering? I’ll go in first and announce our presence.”

At this strange request, Subaru raised an eyebrow, puzzled.

“Alright, Otto, but wouldn’t it be better if we all went in together?”

“Y-Yes, it’s just a matter of protocol. After all, I am your envoy, right?”

“Okay, if you say so. I trust you…”

After Otto left, Subaru waited a couple of minutes, reflecting on recent events.

Everyone had been acting very, very strange since they had experienced the hypnotic attack.

Garfiel was visibly anxious, lightly tapping his right foot on the ground; they all seemed genuinely tense since that moment during the carriage ride, even though everything had been fine just a moment before.

One thing was certain: all the passengers, except for Subaru, had come under the influence of some unknown force that had shown them something; and it was the knight’s duty to find out what it was.

Then there was the matter of the attack on Priestella. Subaru could feel the tension enveloping the entire city, despite the general silence.

After a couple of minutes, Otto reopened the door and gestured for him to enter.

A second after Subaru stepped into the room, there was a disgusting, nauseating sound: Anastasia Hoshin had vomited on the refined, decorated floor of the room.

…What on earth is going on?!
