She stared at the soil in her hands. The seed in her palms was dead, but she tried to make it grow. Bloom, she thought, come on. Bloom.
No luck. She was a failure. Again. All the others could revive a dead seed, but not her. Her ears twitched and her back ached. She wanted to fly away, but she lost her wings the day she was born again.
Somatra was unfamiliar with this land. She wasn’t from here. But she would live here until she died and was born again.
Of course she was cast out. She was of no use to the nymphs who’d found her. Even her own ‘mother’ turned her cheek. So Somatra left and changed her name, found a nice cabin in the forest.
The humiliation burned. She couldn’t resist trying to make that dead seed grow. The trees felt like they were laughing at her.
When she found the human man—so alike to her Arata—she took him in. She would make him bloom.
