Chapter Text
The violent winds howled outside. It was quite a snowy night in Blackrock, nothing unusual. A blizzard raging through the mountains and jagged peaks. Although the moon was high up in the sky, the lights in the half hidden laboratory were still on.
A few scientists and other employees were still dragging themselves through the hallways, working on whatever projects they had to finish. One of those was none other than Subspace. He sat in his office at his workbench, trying to think of new upgrades he could add to his biografts. Was he tired? Yes. Was he going to leave? Absolutely not.
In his mindset, this was wayyyy more important than sleep, although it was driving him a little crazy. His office had absolutely no windows because it was located deep within the mountain the laboratory was built in. The only light source he had was a single fluorescent light that occasionally flickered.
The noise of its constant low hum and it buzzing on and off, leaving him in total darkness even just for a split second was truly starting to piss him off. Subspace had all of his focus on the work before him. A severed biograft arm lay on the table. He was carefully trying to tweak a few wires and circuits on the inside of the arm when suddenly the door to his office was flung open without warning.
Subspace practically flew out of the chair he was sitting on. That caused him to stab the severed arm with a screwdriver he was holding, making all of his hard work go to waste as it was destroyed.
The demon whipped his head towards the door "DON'T YOU KNOW HOW TO KNOCK???!!!" he yelled angrily. In the frame stood none other than Hyperlaser. He stayed in place, unmoving and without saying a word. That pissed off Subspace even more.
"What the HELL do you want??" once more his question was met with silence.
Something felt off, but Subspace didn't have the patience to deal with this bullshit. He stomped over to the mercenary and looked up at his covered face. Was Hyperlaser always this tall? Subspace was pretty sure he has always been the taller one.
It didn't matter. It was probably the scientists mind playing tricks on him. He started poking the blue demons chest, well, more of stabbing due to his sharp claws.
"YOU need to GET OUT of MY OFFICE! I DON'T have TIME for YO-" Suddenly Hyperlaser grabbed the pink demons left arm, the one he was using to poke him. Subspace tried to pull his arm out of the tight grip but he couldn't. Where was all of this insane strength coming from? What kind of crazy steroids was this guy taking??
"HEY LET GO OF ME! I'LL HAVE YOU GUTTED AND HUNG UP ON A WALL FOR THI-" His yells turned into a screech of pain, a sickening crack accompanying it. Hyperlaser had applied so much force to the grip that it managed to break the arm.
Subspace was now desperately trying to wriggle out of the grasp "YOU ABSOLUTE-" the scientist was about to insult the mercenary but he was swiftly thrown across the room, crashing into a shelf.
To add insult to injury a few glass beakers fell out of it and right onto the pink demons head.
He groaned in pain and stared up at the other demon in both anger and fear. The fear quickly grew stronger as he realized that something was totally wrong.
As Hyperlaser fully stepped into the room the door closed behind him. He was tall, almost as tall as the ceiling. The way he walked was weird and uncoordinated, as if he didn't know how to properly use his own legs. With each step he took a crack sounded, as if every bone in his body was broken.
It didn't even sound like Hyperlaser either. Subspace heard deep raspy breaths coming from the demon before him. Blood dripped from under the blue demons helmet. Was that really Hyperlaser he was looking at? Well, the scientist wasn't going to stick around and find out.
Subspace swiftly picked himself up, holding his injured arm. He had to alert the nearest biograft, he was sure one of them could take care of this thing. Now the issue was that the thing was standing in the middle of the room, meaning that he would have to get around it first.
They stood still, staring at each other for a few seconds. Subspace acted first. He pulled out a little pink crystal and threw it below his feet, turning into a puff of smoke.
Quickly he moved across the room, trying to make it to the other side but to his dismay, he was unsuccessful. He felt a cold gloved hand wrap around his neck and another ripped the gas mask off his face.
Within a second Subspace found himself lifted above the ground. The thing threw away the scientists mask and then lifted its large hand. It was totally bigger than before, was this creature becoming stronger?
It had long fingers that the gloves weren't big enough to contain anymore. They were ripped and torn at the tips. It had bony, sickly gray fingers ending with sharp black claws.
It raked at Subspaces back with its free hand, leaving large red marks. The pink demon bit down on his tongue to avoid screaming out in pain. If that's what the creature wanted, it wouldn't get it. It seemed to be intelligent and sadistic as it made raspy growly noises which resembled laughter.
Subspace clawed on its arm with his right hand but his claws were no good, the skin of the creature was tougher, and harder to scratch through. So he switched to a different tactic.
He opened his mouth and bit down on the things arm. This was enough to draw blood. The creature dropped Subspace onto the ground and inspected its fresh bite wound.
Meanwhile the scientist coughed and gasped, breathing in the air, happy his neck was finally out of the creatures grasp.
He spat out the creatures blood and quickly scuttered out of the room, snatching his gas mask off the floor. Subspace didn't mind the taste of blood at all but this things blood was disgusting. First of all, it was cold which already made it awful but it also tasted like wet mud mixed with piss.
He ran out into the hallway, he had to find a biograft, or somebody, anybody. The burning, stinging gashes on his back slowed him down and left a trail of blood.
Not to mention his left arm was still broken, sending extra shots of pain through his body. He swiftly put the gas mask back on his face. When he turned the corner to the next hallway he was met with an unexpected sight.
Broken biografts. Two of them. Their heads were ripped off and thrown far away from their bodies. "What the hell.." he muttered under his breath. Suddenly a wave of anger washed over him "YOU USELESS MACHINES!" he kicked one of the severed heads, sending it flying to the other side of the hallway.
"What the fuck did I create you for.." his anger disappeared in a matter of seconds. Low growls accompanied with a weird clicking noise echoed down the hallway. A long gray arm stretched out of Subspaces office. Its hand grabbed the doorframe and soon its other hand joined.
Subspace didn't wait around to find out how the thing looks like now. He bolted down the hallway with biograft corpses. His next destination was the infirmary. If he wasn't going to get the thing killed, he would at least get his wounds healed.
The halls felt empty and quiet. I wonder why, could it be because it was 1 am in the morning? Nooo, no way. After a few turns he stopped running, trying to preserve his energy. It seemed that he got away from the creature for now. He passed a few extra dead biografts until eventually he saw the infirmary door.
Subspace looked behind him. The hallway he just walked through had a few giant scratches embedded in the walls and in the middle of the previously gray clean tiles was a trail of his own red blood. He had a feeling that although he was safe for now, that wouldn't last long.
Before entering the infirmary he threw down a bunch of spiky pink mines. Afterwards he quietly opened the door and slowly crept into the room. He closed the door behind him and then looked around. The nearest wall was lined with 3 empty beds. The entire space looked awfully bright, white walls, white bed sheets, white ceiling and every other thing you could possibly think of was in either white or a light shade of gray. It was giving off that casual hospital look. Subspace was basically flashbanged by this because the hallways were painted a dark gray color and he wasn't used to this much light (it has probably been days since he has crawled out of his office.) For a second he thought nobody was there until he noticed a demon, seemingly asleep, with their head resting on the reception desk.
They had a pair of straight backwards-facing dark red horns and wore a white lab coat with little dark gray blackrock symbols on both sleeves. Subspace stomped over to them and slammed his fist on the desk. The demon didn't wake up which only aggravated the anger issues haver. He grabbed the demon by their horn and yanked their head up.
A few second later he realized the demon wasn't sleeping. They were dead long before Subspace arrived. Their neck had been broken an their body was cold to the touch. He let go of the demons horn, letting their head fall back on the table.
What the hell was going on? Was anyone even alive other than him? Was it really the thing that did all of this by itself, on its own? He had to get out of there, immediately. He felt a growing sense of doom rise with each second he stood still, frozen in place. But soon, his train of thought was interrupted by the sound of light quiet footsteps. Low clicking and rasping slowly got louder and louder. It was there. It was right outside the door.
