Oh, What a Life we Live

Summary:

Just months after defeating Leviathan, and the sudden disappearance of Lex Luthor, the SuperFriends have gone into a lax state. The city has gone quiet recently, allowing Kara to let her guard down. However, a recent tip from a former DEO agent has set the organization on the watchout for a new drug - one that has Extranormal properties.

Notes:

I want to thank AO3 for delaying this fic by hours due to being down. I was barely able to survive not having this site.

Work Text:

Sunlight filtered in the room from the windows. The glare directly shone into Lena’s eyes, with the walls and floor being a cream white that bounced any of the light that came in. Scrunching her face, the CEO groaned lightly, not wanting to wake up this early – her alarm had not gone off yet.

Sighing heavily with disappointment, she opened her eyes slowly to adjust to the sudden brightness of the room. Lena stared at her dresser, with a mirror above it, and a smile grew on her face when she saw the tan, veined arm wrapped around her. Speaking of that arm, the person it was attached to was quietly snoring into her hair. She grasped her hand to bring it up to her lips, kissing it, before removing herself from the bed. Kara immediately grumbled at the loss before her girlfriend put her pillow in the place she vacated, causing the hero to bundle into it.

Walking into her bathroom, Lena closed her left eye and raised her hand to block her face as the motion sensors turned on the lights. After opening her eye, she walked over to start her shower, waiting for the water to heat up. She looked at herself in the mirror above the sink and groaned again, glaring at all the bruises on her naked body. There were a bunch in places where she needed to either wear conservative clothing or spend an hour masking with makeup. She needs to stop doing this now, the CEO thought to herself.

Stepping into the shower, Lena let out a relieved hum as the aches in her body lessened. She spent her time in her shower, knowing she could, with waking up with the sunrise - something she didn’t do often anymore. The act of washing her hair alone was so relaxing, filtering her fingers through strands of black for her shampoo, to then massage her scalp as she washed it away. As she began washing her body, Lena nearly jumped when the touchpad in the shower alerted that her alarm had begun to go off, making her quickly shut it off in hopes of allowing her girlfriend some much-needed sleep.

After finishing her shower and shutting off the water, Lena spent her time drying herself off before getting out to start getting ready for the day. First, she brushed and flossed her teeth before using mouthwash, gargling for 20 seconds before spitting it out. Next, Lena applied her face care creams only after splashing her face with cold water. Finally, she then applied lotion to her face and then washed her hands. Once finished, she opened the door that connected her closet to the bathroom.

Inside, the CEO went to pick an outfit to wear, which was important as there was a press conference outside L-Corp at 3 pm. Going with a navy blue suit and white shirt, she went out to grab a pair of underwear and a bra from her dresser, taking a moment to watch Kara sprawled out on her bed. She returned after her short delay to get dressed, waiting until after she did her makeup before putting her shirt and jacket on. With red lips, and killer eyebrows, Lena left the bedroom to begin brewing coffee for work, another departure from her regular life before a committed relationship.

As she poured coffee into her travel cup, Kara stumbled out of her room in a tank top and underwear, with her hair all over the place and rubbing her eyes. The CEO chucked at the sight, heading over to the hero and pecking her cheek, “Good morning, darling, sleep well?”

“I definitely slept well after last night,” she replied with a smug grin, leaning in to kiss Lena. She reciprocated easily, wrapping her arm around Kara’s neck to deepen it. Their short time together was interrupted by the CEO’s phone blaring, letting Lena know that her driver arrived at the building,

Pulling away, she sighed, “I love you, honey, but I gotta go.”

“Go save the world,” Kara whispered, giving Lena a look of pure love as she grabbed her things and headed for the door. Once she left, the hero stared at the door for another moment before making herself a cup of coffee.

“What’s the word?”

“Don’t engage yet, Supergirl, we need them to act first before intervening,” Alex replied to her sister, watching the scene of a supposed drug deal go down. Normally, they wouldn’t involve themselves with something like this, at least to the degree they were now, but a former DEO agent informed them that there was a new drug on the market that gave powers.

The person in the hood, the supposed dealer, pulled something out of their pocket and showed it off to the buyer. Alex bit her lip, pulling out her binoculars to see what was exactly being shown. Giving it to Brainy, he also watched what was occurring, “That does appear to be the drug, it has the same look as what we were detailed, but I can’t get a definitive confirmation.”

He pulled down the binoculars, tapping his earpiece, “If it’s any consolation, I calculate an 82.43% odds th-“

“Wait,” Supergirl interrupted, confused as to why they were heading to a car. She continued to hover above, attempting to use her X-ray vision to see what was in the trunk that was being unlocked, but she couldn’t see anything. Holding her earpiece, the hero relayed what she witnessed.

Alex ordered DEO agents to stand by to intervene, but something stopped them. Kara watched as the trunk opened to reveal a rocket launcher. She tuned her hearing into what the two were conversing by the car.

So, this is the FHJ-18 AA rocket launcher, a beauty of a weapon, if I say so myself. Just had a group buy a shipment of them. I’ve been told they’re planning on using them later today. It can carry normal explosive ammunition, but can be retrofitted with Kryptonite, nuclear warheads, and has a lock-on system to target any airborne target.”

The sudden smugness from the dealer shocked Kara, who gasped before a rocket was shot at her. Eyes widening, the hero flew away from the area, hoping to take the rocket out of the area. As she did so, DEO agents swarmed the buyer and seller. The buyer held his hands up and kneeled, but the seller didn’t. He grabbed the drug and chugged it before crying out, collapsing on the ground and convulsing.

“Supergirl, what’s your status?!”

“I can’t shake this off,” Supergirl replied, panting as she pushed herself close to her limits as the rocket continued to follow her. She groaned, “it can’t be running on fuel, it looks like repulsor tech from L-Corp.”

Alex ordered her agents to restrain the buyer, hoping to keep him from causing havoc, but everything went to shit quickly. As they went to put power-dampening handcuffs on him, he threw them across the alley. He quickly grew, going from a measly 5’6” and maybe 145 pounds to 8’7” and weighed maybe 7 times as much.

“Dreamer, J’onn, we need assistance.”

Dreamer, from the same rooftop Kara had been perched on, made a lasso with her powers and jumped off, wrapping it around the fire escape to cushion her landing. J’onn made his entrance by phasing through a building in his Martian form. They stared at the creature, who roared at them before charging.

Lena had been sitting on her couch when she got a phone call. Sighing, she quickly looked over the rest of the document before signing it and grabbing her phone. When she saw the caller ID, she didn’t react to the picture of her and Alex from Al’s.

“What’s wrong?”

The sound of gunshots shocked the CEO, who put her hand on her chest. Grunts could be heard from the other side as Alex struggled with what she was doing. Panting, the director informed Lena, “We got a tip from an agent of an alien drug trade going down, but now we’re fighting a super-powered drug dealer and Kara is getting chased by a Kryptonite warhead that runs on your propulsion tech. Brai-“

“He’s here,” Lena interrupted before ending the call. The Coluan landed on her balcony, rushing into her office with the rocket launcher that had been used. Filling her in, the CEO began to work on hacking the rocket shot at Kara, after Brainy had connected the launcher to her computer.

They worked tirelessly to finish thoroughly, as any mistake could hurt Kara. When a breakthrough was made, neither spoke but simply continued to work as time was precious at the moment. Lena grinned as she wrote code that acted as a Trojan Horse, which was accepted by the server used for the rocket, and began to destroy it from the inside.

Brainy turned away from their work, to speak with Alex about their progress and how the others were making do. While he was busy, Lena went to the couch to call Kara.

Supergirl, meanwhile, was miles from the coast above the Pacific. She was gasping for breath as she hovered above the ocean. Pressing her earpiece, she smiled to hear the CEO, “How was your morning workout? I heard it got to you today, but those are Brainy’s words, not mine.”

“I don’t know what I’d do without you, Lena,” the hero sighed. She took a second to look at the scenery before starting her journey back to National City.

“I call that a success, comrade!” Brainy cheered as he ended his call with Alex. Lena quickly ended hers with Kara, paying attention to her friend, smiling, “I was just informed by Director Danvers that the mutant was contained and given a sedative for transport back to the DEO. I shall meet them there,”

“Bye, Brainy,” The CEO chuckled while the Coluan collected his things and flew away. She watched him leave, not helping but having a familiar feeling seeing a friend fly from her balcony. Oh, what a life she lived…

“How you feeling, Supergirl?” Alex asked as Kara came from the DEO showers with a towel on and using another one to rub her hair. She leaned against a locker parallel to her sister’s, with a row between them to block the redhead from seeing the blonde as she changed. Kara trekked to her locker, unlocking it to pull out a pair of DEO sweats.

She placed them on the bench behind her, “What the hell happened? I thought it was just the drug trade, but that guy had something specifically targeted for me, like they knew we were going to be there.”

“I don’t know,” the director responded, grabbing a lock and playing with it as her sister changed. She sighed, putting it down and allowing the clink from the metal to fill the room. Alex sat down on the floor, holding her knees to her chest and scratching her head, “we’re checking for any leaks from us, and I have Brainy meeting with the informant.”

Kara sighed as she pulled her shirt over her head. Putting shoes down in front of Alex’s eyesight, she sat down to begin putting them on, “I’m mainly worried about what is stored for the other launchers. Did Brainy get anywhere with the Trojan Horse Lena used?”

The redhead shook her head, “No, whoever used the server for the rockets got rid of any trace. We’re still at a dead end on what they were planning.”

“It’s gotta do something with L-Corp, right?”

“Maybe, if Lena’s luck has anything to say about it,” Alex joked, attempting to lighten the mood between the two. Kara simply glared at her sister, who frowned before looking down at the floor. The hero got up, after tying her shoes and fluffing her hair, before walking out of the bathroom. Alex followed her to the mainframe of the base, watching agents work on any leads they had.

Kara put her hands on her hips, creating the classic Supergirl pose that many found inspiring or found themselves in fear, depending on who they were. She stared at the main TV screen in the middle of all the others, which was showing live coverage of the L-Corp press conference. Her eyes widened dramatically at the sight, checking her watch to see it was 2:15. She was late.

Kara rushed past attendees as she made for the backstage, attempting to see Lena before things got underway. Security stopped her before making it, standing in front of the gate that separated the L-Corp team and the public. Whilst she was annoyed that they still didn’t know of their relationship, Kara was happy to see that they were serious about protecting her girlfriend.

One of the guards turned his head, obviously being told something, which turned out to be letting the reporter in as he motioned for the others to move out of the way. Kara smiled, and nodded at them, before walking past them and directly to the CEO, who looked up just in time to see her coming.

Lena pulled her girlfriend into a tight hug, keeping in mind that she could hold her as tight as she wanted to. Burying her face into the blonde’s neck, she whispered, “Are you ok? Any lasting effects from the warhead?”

“I’m fine,” Kara answered, pulling herself back to see her girlfriend’s face. She leaned in to peck Lena’s lips but was interrupted by Jess informing her boss that they were ready for her. The CEO thanked her assistant before they sighed, and Kara backed away.

Once the reporter left backstage, Lena collected her notes and took a moment to calm herself. Given the go by her team, she moved to the open stage that faced press and citizens of National City. Putting on her business face, she smiled while watching the crowd and gazing at the buildings that loomed over.

Kara found herself in the middle of the crowd, paying half a mind to Lena’s speech while checking her surroundings. Tapping her ear, she asked, “Are we good?”

“Everyone is in position,” Alex responded. Putting herself in her ‘Supergirl’ mindset, the hero watched her sister go push through the crowd in civilian clothes, “I’ve got snipers on the buildings around us running reconnaissance. Brainy is with a team up there while Dreamer is with Lena’s security team as a precaution.”

Kara turned her attention back to Lena, and whilst she wanted to just listen to her girlfriend, she kept her super-hearing tuned for anything irregular. The reporter, in a blue button-up and grey slacks with a press pass, looked like any other person with her glasses on, but she lowered them just slightly to use her x-ray vision.

Sighing to herself, Kara pulled them back up. There was nothing out of the ordinary from what she could see, which was weird. Alex reported that the DEO couldn’t find anything wrong either. As the press conference began, the hero kept her ears tuned to anything that’d cause suspicion while watching Lena speak on stage. Minutes passed with nothing going on and before they knew it, the CEO was ending the event.

She took a few questions, thanked those who were there for attending, and then left the stage to most likely recuperate back in L-Corp. Kara stood there, despite other reporters and attendees walking past her to leave the area, staring at the stage in confusion. How could those guys refer to something occurring later on, only for them not to do anything?

“Supergirl, you copy?” the director asked her on the comms, worried that her sister was out of sorts. Not getting a reply, she walked up behind Kara, holding her shoulder, “Hey, Kar, are you ok?”

Humming, the blonde turned her head to Alex, her eyes focusing on the woman in front of her, “wha?”

“Kara, you’re just standing here and staring at the stage like you’re seeing through it.”

“S-sorry,” Kara ducked her head, turning to the stage and taking one last look before returning her attention to her sister, “I’m just so confused. We all thought they’d be targeting the conference, so why did nothing happen?”

Lena grabbed her bottle of 2012 Cabernet from the wine fridge in the kitchen. Cracking her neck and loosening her tie, the brunette pulled out the cork and poured some into her glass. Sighing, she took a sip and ate the leftovers on the kitchen island. It was midnight and she had just gotten back from work. With the press conference going well, by her standards, Lena was able to work on other projects that sorely needed her attention the last few weeks.

Checking her phone, she saw some texts from Kara, even a call from her girlfriend, but she decided to respond to them later, needing these few moments of silence and peace to herself. Lena continued sipping on her wine, rolling up her sleeves and unbuttoning just a little of her shirt before pulling her hair out of the ponytail that she put it in hours prior.

The CEO went to turn down the lights and get prepared for bed, but before she could, Lena couldn’t help but feel something was off. Call it sixth sense or whatever, but she had a knack for quarterly assassinations, so she was cautious about almost every situation she was in.

The sound of the storm outside infiltrated her penthouse. That was curious, considering she made sure her home used thick enough glass to deafen any sounds outside.

Walking from the light switch, she slowly ventured to her balcony. Her eyebrows knit together in confusion at how the door was open, letting rain come in. As Lena went to close the door, she paused. The door was never opened if she came into the penthouse. Someone must be there with her.

I need Kara, now, the CEO thought to herself. Fear gripped her being, thinking back to earlier that day with the threat on her girlfriend’s life with the Kryptonite warhead. Alex had informed her before she went down for the press conference that they might have been targeting the event.

Looking at her watch, she flipped up the face to show the ‘S’ button embedded in it. Lena went to press it, ready for the hero to be there within a moment’s notice, but something caught her eye, something glimmering in the middle of the night. Just as she looked up, a gasp left her lips when she looked at one of the launchers aimed straight for her penthouse. A guy waved before shooting a rocket.

The CEO ran from the balcony, jumping behind her couch for cover before an explosion rocked the building. The shockwave propelled Lena into her TV, shattering the screen as she dropped to the floor, motionless.

Lena groaned, her head pounding and her back in tremendous pain. She opened her eyes to see the balcony was gone, and before she knew it, another explosion rocked the building as a rocket was shot below her floor. Struggling to stand up, the Luthor wobbled to keep herself on her feet. She looked at her watch again, ready to call for Kara, but found it was busted.

Turning to look at her kitchen island, where her phone was, Lena knew she needed to get it quickly. While the hero could figure out there was trouble here without the use of the watch, the super friends needed to be here to reinforce her.

Lena cried out as she stumbled to her phone, no doubt having at least a sprained ankle, maybe even a broken leg if her luck had anything to say. As she neared her target, shots rang out from the building across. The CEO cried out in fear, dropping to hide behind the kitchen island, knowing that it was of no use to grab her phone at that point. She just needed to hope that Kara, and the super friends in extension, were on their way.

Kara had just left Paris after getting reports of an attack on the city. Once she made sure the threat was neutralized, not literally, she was on her way home to rest.

It had been a long day. The hero was mentally, and physically, exhausted from the events that occurred. When she had left L-Corp, following Alex back to the DEO, the pair had spent the better part of an hour or two going over what went wrong. Neither of them, especially when Brainy eventually butted in, could figure out why there wasn’t an attack on the L-Corp press conference.

Kara was at cruising speeds over the Atlantic which, for her, was around Mach 6. The trip usually took an hour and a half to complete, with Kara being able to view the scenery as she flew. She’d sometimes fly with her back to the water, looking up at the night sky and gazing at the stars, hoping to one day find Rao with her naked eye. Other times, she’d watch the sunrise or sunset, maybe take witness to some of the sea animals that stared with what seemed to be confused faces.

The hero was just passing New York City when she tuned her hearing to National City, checking in on her girlfriend. Everything was muffled, the distance being the furthest she could hear with her super hearing. However, she was able to pick up commotion outside Lena’s penthouse, alerting Kara to the fact that she was in trouble.

Her eyes widened before a determined look fell upon her face. The hero grunted as she pushed herself to her max, to even a level she never knew she could push herself to. Within a few minutes, Kara could see Lena’s penthouse in her eyesight, noticing a group of men across the street on a building.

Swooping down, the hero took out the goon with the rocket launcher. She landed on the roof, cracking the area beneath her. Her eyes glowed red, showing her anger at the men who dared to attack Lena. Kara’s hands clenched into fists, the pressure cracking her knuckles.

They were in a stare-off, no one moving as Supergirl took a good look at all of them. Pressing the symbol on her chest, the anti-Kryptonite suit enveloped her body. As it did, she also pressed a button on her wrist, alerting the DEO that she needed backup.

Before any of the men could attack her, the hero restrained all of them within an instant. She turned to the building, noticing a fire had erupted near the 18th floor. Acting quickly, Supergirl hovered down and began to use her freeze breath, flying into the building to fight the flames. As they died down, with firefighters arriving on the scene, she escaped the building to head up to Lena.

Kara's eyes widened when she noticed the balcony was gone. All those memories…

She hovered through the broken glass doors, taking a look at the ruined penthouse. The hero held in her tears as she listened in for Lena’s heartbeat, quickly finding it, and her, behind the kitchen island. Rushing to the woman, Kara kneeled to take a look at her, using her X-ray vision to check for any injuries.

“K…Kara?”

The hero had to hold in her tears at the state her girlfriend was left in. The CEO was bruised on her arms and legs, ash all over her clothes, and her x-ray vision showed Kara that the woman had a broken shin. Her hands shook as she went to touch Lena, “I-It’s going to be OK, honey, I’m here now.”

She gently picked up Lena, who cried out in pain at the action. Kara bit her lip as she floated and left the penthouse, flying to the DEO to get help. Arriving there in a few moments, with a team of DEO doctors on the balcony, she laid her girlfriend on a gurney and let the doctors take Lena away.

The hero watched as the woman she loved was whisked away, knowing there was nothing she could do at this point. While she stared, Nia came up beside her, not saying anything for a few moments. The younger hero looked at her mentor and back at the place Lena was taken away, with a smile on her lips, “She’s gonna be fine.”

“I know.”

“You got there just in time,” the Naltorian stated. Kara simply nodded, not wanting to discuss how she could’ve been there sooner if she hadn’t taken so long over the Atlantic. Turning to face National City, she leaned on the railing and gazed at the view before her. Nia followed suit, standing a foot away from the other hero, whispering, “You’re going to hate yourself for this, but Lena would never blame you for letting this happen. There was nothing you could do.”

Kara shook her head, her voice cracking when she tried to respond. She let out a sniffle before collapsing, sitting against the railing as the tears from before finally flowed freely and her head dropped. The other hero watched with wide eyes having not been given many chances to see Supergirl like this. She kneeled, holding Kara’s shoulder, “Even if you were going at your top speed on your way back, you still wouldn’t make it before she was attacked. And although you are beating yourself up right now, the fact that you were willing to risk yourself on whether more Kryptonite warheads were there is one of the reasons why Lena loves you.”

The super’s head shot up to Nia’s, seeing a sympathetic face on her protégé. No one, outside maybe Jess, knew of their relationship. At least, that’s what they both thought. The Naltorian gave her friend a smile before whispering, “I see the way you two look at each other. I would have to be blind not to see the heart eyes that are sent.”

“I…We…” Kara stumbled, not being able to come up with an excuse. She knew she was in a bad position. Nia read people like books, able to tell someone’s story right from their mannerisms. There was no way she could lie to the other hero.

Instead of an excuse, however, she explained, “Lena and I just wanted some privacy. So much is expected from us, and we felt like we needed this for ourselves, for now, especially with all the threats on her life already. She didn’t want my civilian life to be interrupted and I didn’t want Supergirl’s enemies to target her over our relationship if anyone ever found out who I am.”

Nia nodded, completely understanding what it was like to live a dual life and the threats it posed to the people they loved. Every superhero could attest to having the same experience. Being the partner of a hero makes a massive target on one’s back. Some get lucky and are with other heroes, like herself, while others, like Kara, are with regular people who wouldn’t be able to defend themselves if the worst came to shove.

“C’mon, let’s get you up, wouldn’t want Director Danvers to worry about you,” the hero joked, knowing how protective Alex was over her sister.

Nia held her hand out, offering to help pull Kara up, who accepted by holding on as she was pulled up. The super couldn’t help but sniffle and wipe her eyes, biting her bottom lip as she asked, “Does Alex know?”

“Nah, I don’t think so,” the Naltorian answered after thinking for a moment. She waved her hand towards the DEO as she expounded, “I don’t think that woman has much of a hang on this type of stuff. She’s more of the interrogating type. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kelly knows, though. She’s a lot better at reading people than I am.”

“Yeah, no kidding,” Kara chuckled, thinking back to how easily Kelly figured out her identity, even being frank enough to do a therapy session with her after hearing a story of when she and Alex were kids.

“There you are,” Alex exclaimed in relief, putting her hand to her chest as she ran up to the duo. She was in her DEO outfit but her hair was out of sorts, pointing to having been woken up due to the alert about the attack on Lena. The redhead walked up towards them, sighing, “I just got back from Lena’s place, it’s wrecked beyond belief. She can’t stay there for the time being. If she doesn’t have another place to live in, Kelly and I can spare a room, or the DE-“

“She can stay with me,” Kara interrupted, further explaining once given a confused look and a sly grin, “we’ve had movie nights where she’s stayed overnight. I have no problem having her as company for a while.”

Alex clicked her tongue, her eyebrow raising in confusion. She didn’t know that the two were at that stage in their friendship after their brief falling out. She was mainly confused about the fact that Lena had stayed over before, with her being the only one she knew for a fact had outside Kara’s boyfriends.

Nodding, the director smiled as she relayed the news, “I checked in with one of the surgeons and they said that Lena is fine. The worst of her injuries is a broken shin that will take a few months to heal, plus some rounds of PT to build up her muscle strength once her leg heals.”

Kara felt air return to her lungs, having felt like she was holding her breath for the longest time. Lena was fine, relatively speaking. All she needed was rest to recover.

Nia bid the sisters farewell as she planned to head back to her apartment. After she walked away, Alex asked the super if she wanted to come with her to discuss what occurred, but was quickly told, “I just want a few moments to myself, if that’s fine.”

The director assured her it was fine, leaving her sister alone. A frown fell on Kara’s lips as she turned to look back at National City, the night sky and stars faded due to the light pollution from the buildings.

The sudden thought that this could continue caused a huff to escape her lips. She knew for a fact this wasn’t a one-and-done situation. There were more of those launchers and she, with the DEO’s assistance, needed to track them down and destroy them. Kara couldn’t risk her loved ones like she did tonight. Not again.

Oh, what a life she lived….

“So, explain it again, where were you?”

Kara groaned, hating that she needed to do this all over again, “I’m telling you, I was just passing NYC, maybe getting close to Pennsylvania when I heard what was happening.”

Brainy was muttering to himself, surely calculating something. He guffawed at whatever number he came up with, moving from working on his tablet to butt in the conversation the super and her sister were having, “Whilst I was working on tracking the other launchers, I couldn’t help but overhear what was going on. Based on my calculations, Supergirl must’ve been traveling at speeds close to 2,605,000 miles per hour, or Mach 3,391.927-“

“I’m sorry, WHAT?!” Kara screamed, shrinking in place as agents around them stared at the trio. She chuckled, pulling Brainy away, with Alex following, to a private area to discuss, “I thought my peak was Mach 10, as how we tested here a few months ago.”

The Coluan shrugged, not being able to figure out that problem at the moment. He turned away to continue working on his tablet while the Danvers sisters gawked, before continuing their discussion.

Dr. Hamilton, the DEO’s chief surgeon, chose that time to approach the duo as they discussed. They froze as the surgeon addressed them, “I’m happy to announce that Ms. Luthor is out of surgery. We set her shin back into place for healing and dealt with the sprain in her back.”

Kara felt a sense of relief fall over her, threading her fingers through her hair as she smiled. Taking a deep breath, the hero asked Dr. Hamilton desperately, “Is it ok if I see her?”

Alex looked at her sister, with a raised eyebrow, in confusion. The desperation in her voice wasn’t something reserved for friends, not how Kara was speaking at the moment. It wasn’t just how she sounded, however, it was the pleading look in her eyes as it seemed like tears were going to fall from her eyes.

Dr. Hamilton’s lips thinned, looking up in the direction of Lena’s room. She took a moment to ponder before returning her gaze to the hero, “I would normally recommend allowing her some time to rest, but considering the circumstance we are in, I will allow it. Just…”

The surgeon sighed, crossing her arms while contemplating her next words. She bit her lip, responding before walking away, “Just be careful with her. She needs time to heal.”

As Dr. Hamilton left the two, Kara turned to her sister with wide eyes. Alex simply held up her hand, shooing the hero away with a smile on her face, watching her run toward Lena’s room.

Once she walked away, the Director’s smile turned neutral. Her eyes hardened, analyzing the last 24 hours in her head, even going as far back as years prior. A hand sliding down her arm caused Alex to whip her head to the side, seeing her girlfriend come up beside her. The smile that had left returned immediately, “Kell, what are you doing here? You should be back at your apartment.”

“Alex,” the woman playfully responded, knowing that the redhead would worry endlessly about the fact she was in the DEO, in harm's way. Kelly linked their fingers together, bringing Alex’s up to kiss her knuckles, “I came as soon as I heard about Lena. I just needed to check in and make sure she was fine.”

Alex huffed, turning her body toward the therapist and grabbing her other hand to report, “Well, you just missed Dr. Hamilton saying that she’s in recovery. Kara actually went to go see her as soon as Linda gave the go-ahead.”

“I sometimes forget how smitten she is,” Kelly chuckled, shaking her head. The director twisted her head, confused as to what her girlfriend was insinuating. She backed away, pulling her hands from the embrace, to put them on her waist.

Kelly’s furrowed her eyebrows at the action, not understanding what she was doing. Alex stared off to the side, her eyes going back and forth as she began to go over what she had just begun analyzing before. The therapist carefully approached her, knowing not to pull Alex out of her thought process with physical touch, “Al, you ok? Baby, you’re scaring me a little.”

“Why do you think Kara is smitten with Lena?” The director asked desperately.

“Alex, honey, I love you,” Kelly finally held her girlfriend’s shoulders when their eyes met. She took a moment to look deep into them, seeing what looked to be betrayal and slight heartbreak within them. Pulling her into a hug, the therapist whispered, “but Kara is blatantly in love with Lena.”

“Wh-Why didn’t she tell me?”

Kelly bit her lip, clenching her eyes as Alex’s voice broke. She could sympathize with her girlfriend, knowing the history the Danvers sisters went through since Kara was placed in her parents’ care.

Kara carefully trekked her way to Lena’s room, with the fear that if she wasn’t careful, she’d hurt the CEO in some way. When she opened the door and entered, the sight of what the hero felt was a broken Lena passed out broke her heart. The woman had a black eye, her face riddled with bruises, and Kara didn’t even want to use her X-ray vision to see what further injuries she had – ones she hadn’t caught before.

The hero pulled up a chair beside the bed, sitting down quietly so as to not disturb her girlfriend. She placed her hand beside Lena’s, staying away from touching her. Kara stared, taking in each of the woman’s features whilst she slept, knowing that this was the only time she was truly safe. The DEO would do anything to protect her, and so would Supergirl.

“What are you doing out of bed?” The Kryptonian asked with disappointment, watching Lena slide herself from under her car. She sat up, taking a cloth to wipe the oil from her cheek. Standing up, albeit slowly and with help, she walked towards the tray Kara left on her desk.

Gulping down the liquid, and only slowing down when given a glare, the CEO cleared her throat, “I’ve been bedridden for a week and a half, Kara. I’m losing my mind.”

Kara shook her head, sighing with clear disapproval. She bit her lip as Lena took a bite of the crackers she had on the tray, advice from the doctors at the DEO for her snacks. The reporter rubbed her girlfriend’s shoulders as she spoke, “But Dr. Hamilton specifically said you need a few weeks of rest. I know you’re using the leg sleeve from L-Corp to move around, but you’re risking further injury, honey.”

“Darling,” Lena turned around, holding Kara’s cheek with her hand. She instinctively leaned into her palm, the stress on her face dissipating in an instant as she closed her eyes.

Tears escaped Kara’s eyelids, her voice choking as her shoulders shook, “I-I can’t lose you too. I nearly did that night and…”

She moved, turning her face away from her girlfriend. Lena watched, her lips quivering just thinking at how much Kara had lost in her life. Her planet, her way of life, Jeremiah, and nearly both her and Alex. Despite the sunny demeanor she showed, her girlfriend had so much trauma for one person.

“Oh, darling,” the CEO wrapped her arms around Kara, squeezing tightly to show her she didn’t lose her. I’m not leaving you if I have anything to say about it.

Kara whimpered, struggling to stand as her legs wobbled. She leaned on the desk beside her, gripping the edge of it, causing it to crumble beneath her hand of steel. She gasped, “I just need you to be safe, I can’t go through something like that again, not with you. You’re supposed to be off limits.”

“I will always be in danger, it comes with the Luthor name,” Lena whispered, using her left hand to pull at Kara’s chin, turning her head slightly so they could have some eye contact. The Kryptonian opened her eyes, staring at the CEO’s blue-green heterochromatic eyes with wonder.

Leaning her head against Kara’s chest, the brunette hummed as she heard her girlfriend’s heart pound. She knew Kara could hear hers too, with that super-hearing and all. Lena closed her eyes, whispering once again, “I have complete faith in you to come to me when I need you.”

“But I nearly didn’t.”

“But you did,” the CEO clarified, rubbing Kara’s arm as she did so, “and at speeds not tracked by a Kryptonian, if I might add. You went far beyond your limit to come to me, why should I not expect you to do so otherwise?”

The Kryptonian licked her top lip, leaning down to kiss Lena's head, and sighed. Even though her girlfriend had all this trust in her, she didn’t want it. There would eventually be a moment where, in an emergency, she wouldn’t be able to get to her in time. Her yearly crossover with the heroes from Earth-1, provided a bigger threat to Lena’s safety. Kara felt her heart twinge, something peculiar given her anatomy under Sol, with her voice wavering as she begged, “Just please, baby, please take some measures to ensure you’re safe. I can’t always be afraid you are going to get hurt.”

“I’ll see what I can do, but,” the CEO pulled away to stare at Kara’s ocean-blue eyes. They sparkled with tears, some of which escaped and were treading down her cheeks. Lena wiped some of them away with her finger, and kissed her cheek to get rid of the others, “let’s go back home. I don't know if you heard, but I’ve been given strict orders to rest, and I could REALLY use cuddles right now…. Only if that’s ok with you, Supergirl.”

“Why, Ms. Luthor,” Kara put her hands on her waist, her voice dropping in an attempt to be formal, and her lips turning into a neutral line. When Lena raised her eyebrow, the Kryptonian grinned, not being able to hold back as she chuckled, “I think that is a great idea. I would love being the big spoon.”

“Who said you’re gonna be the big spoon?”

“Me.”

“You’re too adorable, darling.”

“Is that a yes?”
