Chapter Text

My mother’s funeral was a dreary thing. There weren’t many people and the stupid social worker won’t leave me alone.

That last part is my fault, really. I did try to run away the first chance I got. I didn’t get far.

They want to put me with my uncle Simon. But as far as I know uncle Simon is dead. Apparently he killed his family in a murder suicide. I feel like that would disqualify him from adopting me but whatever.

Right as the funeral ends a black jeep pulls up and a soldier gets out. The social worker waves him over and tells me that he will bring me to my uncle.

“Hey there kid. I’m Kyle, but people call me Gaz.”

Thats probably his call sign.

“I’m Maya.”

The social worker sighs.

“I’ll get her bags.”

She walks away without another word.

Gaz frowns.

“She doesn’t seem like a very nice person. Is she always like this?”

She is. But he doesn’t need to know that.

“I tried to run away.”

That doesn’t seem to make it better. But the social worker comes back with my bags and puts them in the car.

“Alright Maya. He has my number if anything goes wrong. If not, you shouldn’t have to see me ever again.”

Good.

Gaz opens the door for me and I climb in the car. I don’t look at the social worker.

Gaz turns on the radio as soon as he get in. It’s some country music. But it’s better than nothing.

He tells me how this is a surprise for my uncle. He doesn’t know that I exist, but him and my mother were close.

He also tells me about his other two team members, whose names are both John. But one goes by Soap. The military is weird.

The John who isn’t Soap is in charge, and my uncle is the next highest ranking. Gaz and Soap and just sergeants apparently.

Eventually I get tired and fall asleep, trusting that Gaz will wake me up when we get wherever we are going.
