Work Text:

Diana knew it would happen.

There was no doubt the ICA wanted her dead, for what she'd done, just as they wanted Victoria back where they thought she belonged. The only glimmer of hope in one regard was the most painful punishment in the other: there was only one agent they'd sent after her and the girl, and it was her own.

It'd made for complicated and conflicting feelings on her part, and who knew, maybe even on 47's. He wasn't as cold and unfeeling as everyone else wanted to see him. They had loyalty, they had trust. And from his point of view, Diana had thrown all of this away without hesitation, to steal ICA's most secret project.

He'd understand once he read the letter she prepared for him, once he knew what the Agency had planned for Victoria. The girl was just like he was, born and bred to be held captive, to follow orders and kill on their captors' behalf. He would recognise himself in her, and he'd do anything to protect her.

For Diana herself, it'd be too late. She'd made her peace with it, over the long weeks of hiding and waiting for her own agent to come and take her life and the girl away. Stopping him was impossible, running and hiding only bought her a bit more time.

Time she used to tell Victoria about him, about the lives they led and the lives they took together. It made it both harder and easier to accept the finality of it. At least Victoria wouldn't be scared of him when he came for her, at least Diana got to relive the good memories and share them with the only other person she allowed into her life.

And it worked, Victoria kept asking for more bedtime stories about 47, and she soon had her favourites she asked to hear again and again. It was soothing, it felt appropriate, like welcoming Death as an old friend while inviting Sleep into their home.

At last, she turned down the lights and wished the girl a good night. A long shower before bed should help clear Diana's thoughts and gather strength for another long night of waiting.
