Honey, Tell Me How Your Love Runs True

Summary:

The group spill some embarrassing stories about Tyler. Kate finds them cute.

Work Text:

It was a humid and hot night, the air thick and heavy with the lingering warmth of the day. The Tornado Wranglers were sprawled out in various relaxed positions around the flickering campfire, their faces illuminated by the dancing flames. They had endured a grueling chase just a few hours earlier, the adrenaline of the hunt now replaced by a deep-seated exhaustion. The fire crackled and popped, casting a comforting glow over the weary group.

Kate was perched on the bed of Tyler’s red Ram, her legs dangling off the edge. She sat so close to Tyler that their shoulders brushed against each other, the contact both comforting and electrifying. Tyler’s smile was soft and serene, a stark contrast to the intensity he had displayed during the chase. Every once in a while, he would glance over at Kate, his eyes filled with an emotion he couldn’t quite name, before turning his attention back to the rest of the Wranglers.

Kate took a slow sip of her cold beer, the bottle damp with condensation, and savored the refreshing taste. The chill of the drink was a welcome relief from the heat that clung to their skin. She smiled amusedly at the stories being shared around the fire, the camaraderie and banter lightening the mood. The Wranglers recounted their most daring chases and close calls, each tale more outrageous than the last, punctuated by bursts of laughter.

“Oh, OH! That makes me think about the first time we met Kate. Ah, I remember it like yesterday.” Boone said as he gestured enthusiastically. His brown eyes suddenly lit up with mischief and he pointed an accusatory finger in Tyler’s direction. “I remember Tyler coming up to me and saying-”

“Boone, that's enough.” Tyler cut the man off rather sternly.

Kate’s eyebrows shot up as she glanced over at the man, who had suddenly tensed up and was shooting daggers at the man across the fire.

Boone’s face fell and he pouted dramatically, “Come on, T! Kate would find it funny!”

The other members of the group shouted out their approval. Lilly, who was laid on the ground below Boone’s feet stated, “He’s just embarrassed, Booney.” Everyone began to hoot and holler about Tyler being embarrassed until the man suddenly jumped up from his seat on the truck bed.

“Fine! Tell the story if you have too, but I'm not gonna stick around and listen.” Tyler grumbled and stomped off somewhere into the darkness.

Everyone began to yell for him to come back, but the man didn't listen. Kate watched him leave with a confused expression on her face, returning her attention back over to Boone.

“He must've said something really nasty about me to act like that.” Kate said, her tone tinged with sadness.

Boone rubbed at the back of his neck and had the decency to look a little guilty, “Now I feel bad telling the story. I didn't realize he was gonna react like that. But naw, Kate, T’s never said a nasty word about you ever.”

His words only confused Kate more and she leaned forward, her hands twitching on her lap. “I'm confused, can you just finish the story? Please?.” she pleaded with desperate eyes.

Boone fiddled with his drink for a moment, seemingly thinking over the consequences of him telling her. He perked up and smacked his leg with a hoot. “Eh, Tyler will forgive me eventually. If he’s not gonna do it, someone has to.”

The Wranglers all yelled out excitedly, chanting for Boone to finish the story. The man stood up from his seat and gestured with his arms for quiet.

“So, the first time we met Kate, right? We pull up being cool as hell like us Tornado Wranglers do-” a few whoops from the crowd cut him off, he grinned widely before continuing, “ We get out of the Truck and I catch Tyler starring over at the Storm Par crew, which isn't unusual I guess for us to size them up.”

Boone redirected his gaze solely over to Kate now, “But he had this look on his face that I ain't ever seen before. And he turns back to me all flustered and I quote him exactly on this, ‘Lord have mercy, she's gorgeous’." His tone was a little softer than when he first began and his voice was suddenly drowned out by the cheers of the other Wranglers.

Kate immediately flushed at his words, a red hue creeping up her neck and cheeks. Her eyebrows knitted together and she bit at her lip, “He said that?” she questioned.

Boone nodded his head seriously, “ Next thing I know he was over there talking to you and the rest is history.” His face pulled into a smile, his eyes crinkling at the corners.

Dani, who was leaned up against the tire of the van, called out, “That’s not even the best part though. When we got back from that first tornado chase, Tyler would not shut up about you.”

Lilly rolled her eyes dramatically, “Oh god, yes! It was all ‘ She’s so smart’, ‘Why is she working with those idiots’, and ‘Do you think we're gonna see her tomorrow?’ ” she shook her head fondly.

Somehow, Kate blushed even brighter at these words. Her face literally radiating heat from how flustered she was. “Well, now I see why he didn't want y'all telling this. He must be so embarrassed.”

The Wranglers all laughed again, and Kate glanced into the darkness where Tyler had disappeared. She felt a warmth in her chest, a mixture of amusement and affection. “I should probably go check on him,” she said, standing up from the truck bed.

The Wranglers all watched her with knowing smiles and encouraging nods. Boone gave her a thumbs-up, and Dani winked.

Boone nodded, still grinning. “Yeah, go easy on him, Kate. He’s a good guy, just a bit dense when it comes to his feelings. He might seem all tough on the outside, but on the inside he's a big softy.”

Kate smiled, feeling a surge of courage. “I know,” she said softly before heading into the darkness in search of Tyler.

The night was quiet except for the distant chirping of crickets. Kate wandered away from the campfire, her eyes adjusting to the darkness. She found Tyler leaning against a tree, staring up at the sky. He looked deep in thought, and Kate felt a pang of sympathy for him.

“Hey,” she called out gently, approaching him.

Tyler turned to look at her, his expression softening. “Hey,” he replied, his voice a bit hesitant. “ I didn’t mean to make a scene back there.” He said quickly, rubbing his hand over his face.

Kate walked up to him with a gentle look on her face, stopping a few feet away. “You okay?”

Tyler sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “Yeah, I just...didn’t want to hear Boone’s story.”

Kate chuckled softly. “It wasn’t that bad. Actually, it was kind of sweet.”

Tyler looked at her, his eyes searching her face. “Really?”

“Really,” Kate affirmed. “I didn’t know you thought that about me. ‘Gorgeous’ and ‘Brilliant’, huh?”

Tyler’s face turned red, and he looked away, embarrassed. “Yeah, well...it’s true.”

Kate felt her heart swell at his words. She took a step closer, reaching out to gently touch his arm. “Tyler, you don’t have to be embarrassed. I’m flattered.”

Tyler glanced back at her, his eyes filled with a mixture of hope and uncertainty. “You are?”

Kate nodded, her smile warm and genuine. “Yeah. And for the record, I don’t think you're half bad either.”

Tyler barked out a laugh, his shoulders shaking from the force of it, before his expression softened even more, and he took a tentative step closer to her. “Kate, I...I’ve wanted to tell you for a long time, but I didn’t know how.”

Kate’s heart raced, and she took another step closer, closing the distance between them. “You just did, Tyler.”

Tyler’s eyes widened, and he looked down at Kate, the tension between them palpable. “So, what now?” he asked softly, his voice barely more than a whisper.

Kate smiled up at him, her heart pounding in her chest. “Well,” she began, “I think we should see where this goes. Take it one step at a time.”

Tyler’s expression softened, and he reached out to take her hand in his. “I’d like that,” he said, his voice sincere.

They stood there for a moment, just holding hands and looking at each other, the world around them fading away. The sounds of their friends laughing and talking around the campfire seemed distant, like a comforting background noise.

Kate broke the silence first, squeezing Tyler’s hand gently. “Come on, let’s go back. They’re probably making up all kinds of stories about us by now.”

Tyler chuckled, his tension melting away. “Yeah, you’re probably right. Let’s go.”

They walked back to the campfire hand in hand, and as they approached, the Wranglers erupted into cheers and applause. Boone stood up, dramatically bowing. “Ladies and gentlemen, the stars of the evening!” he announced, grinning widely.

Kate rolled her eyes, but she couldn’t help the smile that spread across her face. Tyler gave a mock salute, playing along with the theatrics. “Alright, alright, settle down,” he said, his voice light and playful.

Lilly leaned over and nudged Dani. “Looks like Operation Get Tyler and Kate Together was a success,” she whispered loudly enough for everyone to hear.

Kate laughed, shaking her head. “You guys are the worst,” she teased, but there was no malice in her tone.

Dani grinned, raising her drink in a toast. “To new beginnings and unexpected surprises!”

The group echoed her sentiment, raising their drinks and clinking them together. Kate felt a warmth spread through her, not just from the fire or the alcohol, but from the genuine camaraderie and support of her friends.

As the night wore on, Kate and Tyler found themselves sitting close together, their hands occasionally brushing against each other’s. Kate eventually leaned her head on his shoulder, which caused Tyler to wrap his arm around her tightly, grinning down at her with some lovestruck expression on his face. They shared stories, laughter, and stolen glances, the beginnings of something new and exciting blossoming between them.

They sat there for a while longer, talking about their hopes and dreams, their fears and uncertainties. And as the first light of dawn began to break on the horizon, they knew that whatever storms they faced, they would face them together.
