When Way asked Sonic for help in coming up with an idea as to what to wear for North’s birthday party, he was expecting Sonic to suggest googling Halloween style costumes to order online. While he was sure Sonic had been planning for weeks on what to wear to the costume themed party that the Omega had asked for, no doubt something elaborate and eye-searing, he’d figured Sonic wouldn’t have any ideas for him. Way had really just wanted Sonic’s opinion on what to choose online, and whether or not he should pick matching family costumes or separate ones.
Instead, Sonic immediately screamed and pulled out his own phone, dragging Way to the couch. “I know exactly what you guys should wear to the party!”
Martin looked over from where he was playing with an iPad inside of his kid’s play tent, eyes wide, almost dropping the little Lactasoy carton he was sipping from as Sonic’s sudden volume startled him. Way mouthed an apology to the pup.
Sonic practically climbed onto Way’s lap, showing him pictures on his phone in an album labeled ‘Way & mini Way.’ There were all sorts of outfits in it, most of them for a parent and child, some for two parents and a child. Before Way could really take in any of the pictures and that before Sonic had clicked on the album that there were albums for all of their closest friends, Sonic clicked on one towards the bottom. Immediately the screen was filled with bright pink and white, with someone wearing a onesie with big ears and a tail and long ribbons.
Way didn’t recognize what animal it was supposed to be, though it was cute. A dog? A fox? Was it some anime thing he was supposed to know? Sonic and North loved silly shows and games and though Way tried to pay attention when Sonic gushed about things to him, he couldn’t recall this thing being from any of them.
“This one would be perfect for you! You’re totally a Sylveon, Phi.”
He wasn’t sure how, but he wasn’t going to argue with Sonic. If he thought this thing somehow matched him, then surely North also agreed, and that would make it a good costume to wear for North’s party.
Way noticed a little logo at the corner of the photo. One he recognized. “Oh, it's a Pokémon.” North especially enjoyed playing the game, while Sonic just liked the different animal characters and a version of the game on his phone that was apparently different from the ones North played. They’d tried to get him to play a few of them, but Way just wasn’t into gaming. Martin enjoyed watching the show, and had a few toys from it, so that was were the majority of his limited knowledge came from.
“And P’Pete would definitely be an Espeon!” Sonic went to the next picture, which was of a similar Pokémon, this one in purple with more simple features and a red dot between the eyes. “Cuz of the psychic thing.”
Way supposed that meant the Pokemon had mind reading like Pete, though he wasn’t sure how that would work in the battling games North like. “Sure.” He couldn’t really picture Pete in the onesie. His mate hadn’t worn anything like that before, but it would be fun to wear similar costumes, and fun to see Pete in something silly and cute. “Are they… evolutions from each other?” The two had similar names. From the episodes he’d seen when Martin watched the show, the Pokémon tended to have similar names when they evolved.
“They’re two different evolutions from the same base Pokémon!” Sonic explained. “They have a sort of baby form they start off as- Eevee!”
The next picture was a children’s size onesie, of a Pokémon Way did recognize, a small brown one that Martin had a plush of. It was adorable, and Way knew Martin would look so cute in the costume.
“Isn’t it great? If you and P’Pete are Sylveon and Espeon, then Martin can be your little Eevee baby! You’d all look so cute!”
Martin already looked so much like Pete that it was adorable when the two of them were together. It’d be even cuter if they were in the silly onesies.
“That’s perfect, Sonic! Oh, but- hold on a second.” Pete had left Way in charge of picking costumes for them for the party, so Way didn’t need his mate’s opinion on the outfit, but Way wanted to make sure Martin was alright with it. “Martin, come look at the costume Sonic picked out for you.”
The pup hurried over to see, grabbing at the phone. He lit up when he saw it, gasping. “It’s Eevee, Mama! Pokémon! Like my toy!”
“Do you like it?”
Martin nodded eagerly. “Yeah! I wanna be Eevee, please!”
Sonic beamed. “You’re gonna match with your mom and dad! This is what they’re gonna wear, see?”
“That’s Eevee’s mama and papa?”
“Yup! Eevee’s parents, Sylveon and Espeon. I’ll show you what they look like.” Sonic searched for the non-onesie versions. Way really wasn’t sure how exactly he was supposed to be the pink, white, and blue one. It was very cute and sweet looking. Martin looked thrilled, scrolling through the different pictures from the show and games.
The purple one, oddly enough, did seem to suit Pete. It was pictured with a black one more than the others in most images, and Way wondered why Sonic hadn’t picked that one for him instead.
“Is Banzai gonna have a costume too, Mama?” Martin asked.
Way had not considered getting Pete’s dog a costume, even though Pete brought the dog everywhere they went and would surely be bringing him to the party. He hoped there were more of the Eevee family that Sonic could pick from, and a dog outfit somewhere online he could order. If not, he would have to find one that matched another of Martin’s toys. Before he could even tell Martin that he’d try to find one, Sonic went back to his photo album and brought up another picture. “Banzai can be the Poké Ball!”
He’d already been prepared for the dog’s costume. Way was impressed. It was a little dog backpack in the shape of the ball from the series. Since Banzai was so small as a shih tzu, it was sure to make it seem like the dog’s whole body was the ball.
“He’s the ball!” Martin said loudly, absolutely thrilled. “Cuz he’s little!”
“Right? Won’t he look so cute as the Poké Ball when your dad is holding him? It’ll be just like a trainer holding one! Maybe we can even have him say, ‘Banzai, I choose you!’”
