Teach Myself How To Die

Summary:

It’s late at night (in the morning?) and Izuku can’t sleep. He decided to sneak out of the dorms and leave the property. What happens when Aizawa sees something he isn’t supposed to see?

Notes:

Work Text:

Oh one, two.

Izuku woke up from his nightmare, gasping and grabbing his shirt as he looked around the room with wild eyes.

Honey, what’d you take?

Glancing at the clock, (It’s too early to start my routine. But I doubt I’ll be able to sleep again) he decided to get up and take a walk outside. It’s the most reasonable thing to do at 02:21, instead of just lying down. Changing into his sweatpants and a plain t-shirt (no sweater or jacket. They all have his face on them) he makes his way down the corridors to the elevator to the first floor.

I think my brain is rotting in places

Softly opening the door as to not alert anybody who might be up (Tokoyami is likely awake, and Denki was a 50/50 chance, one he’d rather not take), he swiftly leaves the dorms, looking up at the camera in the corner of the main room as he does.

I think my heart is ready to die

The soft crunch of leaves soothes his nerves, serving as a reminder that he’s real (not that he’d had any trouble remembering any other time) and breathing. Looking around, he sees motion from his peripheral. (It’s Aizawa-sensei. It’s always him. He’s safe.)

I think my body is falling in pieces

A sharp pain distracts him from his thoughts, a reminder that he isn’t safe anywhere. He makes his way to leave the property, uncaring of who’s around, until he’s stopped by a familiar shadowy form.

I think my blood is passing me by

“Problem child,” a gruff voice sighs. “Where are you going at this hour?” Izuku looks anywhere but his teacher’s face, tired and agitated.

Honey, what’d you take? What’d you take?

“Nowhere,” is the only reply he achieves.

Honey, look at me

“That isn’t an acceptable answer, and you know it.” Aizawa-sensei pinches his nose bridge as he wonders what he did to deserve such a problem child.

Tell me, what’d you took? What’d you take?

Instead of acknowledging his teacher, Izuku decided to push past him to his destination. Where is that? The beach of course. His only form of comfort. People aren’t safe, he knows that. Any time he even attempted to get close to someone, they pushed him away and made sure he stayed there. (“Yuuei isn’t like that!” his mind screamed, but why was he still called Deku here?)

Honey, what’d you take? What’d you take?

“Midoriya. Stop and look at me.” Aizawa planted his hand on his shoulder, filing away how Izuku flinched at the contact. “You aren’t going anywhere tonight. You haven’t asked, it’s 02:37 in the morning, and you don’t even have a jacket or anything. You’re being illogical.”

Honey, look at me

“I don’t care,” Izuku said, startling his teacher at his tone. “I’m going home and you can’t stop me.”

Tell me, what’d you took? What’d you take?

“If you wanted to see your mother, you could’ve asked, you kno-“

“That isn’t a home! That’s a house I live in! It’s not even relatively close to a home!” Izuku interrupted, tears pricking his eyes. He spun out of Aizawa-sensei’s grasp, turning to face him.

I think my fate is losing it’s patience

He sprints away, towards Dagoba, the one place where he can simply exist without issues, the pro hot on his tail. He slows down when he reaches his sanctuary, feeling the cool sand on his feet. He swishes the sand around him, probably looking incredibly stupid as he does. This is what he needed.

I think the ground is pulling me down

Aizawa nearly tackles him to the ground out of pure frustration that it led to this. “Problem child, why did you run here? We have to go back. It’s 3:20 now.”

I think my life is losing momentum

In favor of dancing instead of responding, Izuku spun and twirled around the beach, uncaring of who was watching. He didn’t stop when he felt another pair of eyes on him, a familiar pair.

“I think my ways are wearing me down”

Aizawa-sensei whipped his head around in surprise at the singing voice, unaware of the added presence. He looked around in search of the mysterious voice before he found it coming from the ocean.

“But if I gave up on being pretty, I wouldn’t know how to be alive.” The voice continued, a body matching it soon. A relatively slim body, with lightly tanned skin. Dark hair and dark blue eyes. Fin-like ears protruding from the side of their head, through the shoulder length hair.

“I should move to a brand new city and teach myself how to die.” Izuku took over, spinning into the strangers arms, eyes closed. If the fact the verse he just sung didn’t scare Aizawa-sensei, him being in someone’s arms definitely will.

Honey, what’d you take? What’d you take?

“Midoriya!” the dark clothed pro shouted, trying to get his attention. “Midoriya, get away from that person!”

Honey, look at me

Izuku twisted towards the water, holding hands with the mysterious person, gracefully dancing in the water. Splashes made their way up his body, his shirt wet and his pants drenched. He laughed, a genuine, bubbly laugh, at the circumstances.

“Tell me what’d you took? What’d you take?” Izuku sang, opening his eyes to look at the stranger. He had a look of regret cross his face as he let go of their hand, slowly walking towards Aizawa-sensei.

Honey, what’d you take? What’d you take?

The strangers eyes flashed a bright purple, realization crossing their features. Izuku’s flashed a sea foam green in response, or maybe that was the moon’s light playing tricks on onlookers eyes.

Honey, look at me

“Problem child. We need to go back to the dorms.” Aizawa-sensei checked his phone for the time. “It’s 3:33. We need to go back. Now.”

Tell me what’d you took? What’d you take?

Izuku swiftly turned around, making his way to the end of the beach, before the stranger called out to him.

“Izuku! You need to come down next week! It’ll be a blast, I swear!” The stranger shouted, a masculine voice that sounded around the same age as his students.

Honey, what’d you take? What’d you take?

“Maybe I will, Tazi! Would you bring me under again?” Izuku called in response, giving Aizawa a name to a face.

Honey, look at me

“No promises~” Tazi giggles before going into the water, disappearing completely. The only evidence that they were here are the foot prints that are too large to be Problem Child’s.

Tell me what you took? What’d you take?

“Midoriya.” Aizawa-sensei huffed. “We need to talk about this.”

“No.”

Looking at Izuku with an incredulous look in his eyes, he stopped in his tracks.

“Excuse me?”

Honey, what’d you take? What’d you take?

“We don’t need to talk about it. I’ll see you in the morning, sensei.” Without another word, Izuku started waking back to the dorms, tracking wet foot prints down the sidewalk.

Honey, look at me

“I just need to know, what did they do to you?” Aizawa called out, half expecting Izuku to ignore him.

“He did nothing, sir. That was all natural.” Izuku turned around to look him in the eyes. Those sea foam green ones with sharp pupils.

Tell me what’d you took?

Izuku turned back around, a two new additions to his pocket. A simple silver necklace with a singular scale on it, and some earrings with shells on them.

What’d you take?

Izuku lost something that night. He lost a little of his humanity to a siren, and in class that morning, his classmates were none the wiser.
