“You wanted to talk to me?” Charlie walked into Vaggies room and shut the door quietly behind her before walking up and sitting next to her friend on the bed. She put her hands in her lap, and looked over at Vaggie expectantly.
“Yeah… I just, Angeldust, I don’t trust him.” Vaggie thought about her bad experiences with men, mostly Adam, the guys on the streets of hell catcalling her, the boys that touch her without permission when she’s out. “I don’t know,” she tried explaining to Charlie “He just seems irresponsible, and unloyal.” She didn’t know much about the spider-demon but she had a bad feeling.
“What? Why?” Vaggie knew her friend would try and defend their only guest at the hotel. She was just like that, she loved that about her, but she also didn’t want her getting hurt, she couldn’t bear to see that. Charlie always saw the best in people… but she also saw good in bad people that would hurt her if given the chance.
“His real name obviously isn’t Angeldust, so- so what else is he hiding?” Vaggie definitely had trust issues, but it was a good thing in her mind, she didn’t want to be used, or to get hurt, or get Charlie hurt. “I just… I don’t want you getting hurt.” Vaggie spoke quietly, looking away from Charlie for a moment before glancing back.
“Vaggie… I know it can be hard to trust people.” Charlie thought back to when she first found Vaggie, it had taken forever for her to get the girl to trust her. She was so tense at first, never sharing anything about herself. But that changed eventually and now they basically share everything with each other. Charlie smiled, “You don’t need to worry, I can take care of myself.”
Vaggie knew that, she saw her demon form on multiple occasions, the other side of her that would not hesitate to put people in their place, the side of her that would certainly put up a fight. She also knew Charlie wasn’t stupid, she wouldn’t get into bad life-or-death situations or be kidnapped or whatever else but…
“I know. I just don’t want you to have to. I want to be able to protect you from everything.” Vaggie thought back to what she had been through, her eye torn out, her wings ripped out, being kicked out of her home. She didn’t want Charlie to go through anything like that, she was optimistic, cheerful, always seeing the best in people, and Vaggie would do anything to keep her like that.
“You’re everything I admire. Everything I aspire to be. Everything I… have.” Vaggie wouldn’t deny she loved Charlie, she was there at her worst, helped her get to her best, stayed by her through breakdowns, panic-attacks, even through the exterminations. She would always give her headphones to block out the screams and practically cuddle her to death during those bad days. She was all she had left to be alive for, she used to have a purpose… to kill sinners to protect heaven. Now she had a good purpose, one she chose for herself, she would always be Charlie's armor.
“You’re like no one else in the universe.” Vaggie continued, “I want to be able to shield you from any harm.” Vaggie wouldn’t hesitate to kill someone for Charlie, wouldn’t have to be asked twice to do something Charlie asked of her, wouldn’t hesitate to sacrifice herself if it meant Charlie would stay alive and happy. She would always put Charlie first.
“I don't want you to feel betrayed or abandoned. No one deserves that. Especially if that one is you.” Vaggie would prefer to go through being kicked from heaven several times over if it meant not making Charlie feel that way ever. She would kill anyone who did, threaten them into apologizing first though. Charlie was just so… Charlie, she didn’t deserve the cruel hell she had been born into.
Charlie looked like she was fighting back tears as she unexpectedly lunged forward and into Vaggies arms, giving her a warm hug with her chin on Vaggie’s shoulder and her arms around her neck, her warmth spreading to Vaggie. Vaggie tensed up for a second before relaxing and hugging back, it was too short.
Charlie leaned back so that she could look at Vaggies face, “That’s the sweetest thing anyones ever said to me.” Charlie said, her eyes softened as she smiled gently. Vaggie then realized the little space between them and blushed.
Charlies face was red too “Vaggie… You’re just - so…” Charlies eyes traveled down to Vaggies lips, it would be so easy to kiss her right now, to thank her in ways that words could never properly express.
“Charlie… I-” Vaggie was an exorcist, she lied to her, she murdered thousands of her people, she hurts people, she would hurt Charlie, if she ever found out she would be heartbroken, betrayed. “I… I don’t…” Vaggie loved Charlie, more than anything, she will put her before herself every time, she loved Charlie, so she had to protect her.
“I think Angeldust is calling you.” See tried her best to keep the emotion out of her voice but it still wavered slightly, she pulled back from Charlie and shuffled farther away on the bed.
“Ah… I understand.” The princesses voice cracked as she took a breath, her eyes welled with unshed tears and she looked away from her friend (ex-friend?). “I’ll… I'll go see what he needs.” Charlie got up and walked out of the door, Vaggie couldn’t see the tears rolling down the demon's face.
I'm sorry… I love you too much to allow you to love someone like me.
