For you

Summary:

“Oh, there goes another one.” Nie Huaisang mentions with a sigh, snapping his fan open and gently fanning himself.

“What do you mean? Do you know what’s going on?” Wei Wuxian asks, his gaze still on Lan Zhan and the person. They wore the Lan sect robes, so maybe they were talking about a night hunt, but if that were the case why did Lan Zhan look so… uncomfortable?

“You may not know this, Wei-Xiong, but Lan Zhan receives a lot of courting gifts when The Cloud Recesses invites other clans for the lectures every year.”

Or, after finding out Lan Zhan gets courting gifts, Wei Wuxian decides to his own gift.

Work Text:

“Isn’t this great? Old man Lan is away again, so we get to do whatever we want!” Wei Wuxian says with a laugh as he crosses the bridge with Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang in tow. It had been like that every other week Lan Qiren would be summoned to go visit the other sects for a leadership meeting and then come back for the lectures. He was glad to not have to attend classes but at the same time… the classes might be the most entertaining thing around here. “It’s a shame we can’t just visit Caiyi town when we want, the food here is so bland! Seriously, what do the Lans have against good food!”

“Maybe if you stop sneaking out past curfew we would get a pass or two to do so.” Jiang Cheng mumbles next to him.

Wei Wuxian jumps onto the rail of the bridge, balancing himself with outstretched arms as he takes careful steps. He really missed Lotus Pier, he can only hope his disciples aren’t getting pushed too hard. He knows training under Madam Yu can be both beneficial and crushing. Wei Wuxian chuckles, hands now resting behind his head. “So what if I broke some rules, it’s fun to see Lan Zhan’s face when I break them. He still owes me two jars of emperor’s smile.”

Jiang Cheng tsks, his arms crossed above his chest. “Is that all you can think about? Wei Wuxian, you really never learn. Wasn’t your last punishment enough?”

“It’s nothing I can’t take!”

“Says the one who begged me to carry him from the Ancestral Hall.” Jiang Cheng shoots back, eyeing his brother. Despite the scowl, there was a hint of concern behind his eyes. “I still think Lan Wangji went too far.”

He shrugs, if anything, he couldn’t help but admire Lan Zhan even more for taking the punishment with him. The way he accepted the consequences even if it wasn’t his fault. The breeze picks up, making Wei Wuxian’s hair flow along with it. All in all, he could appreciate the beauty that is The Cloud Recesses, especially now in spring with all the flowers in full bloom. He wonders how it would look if there were a few ponds with lotus flowers. Maybe he can talk to Lan Zhan about it.

“Is that Lan Zhan over there?” He hears Nie Huaisang mention, his gaze directed towards the top of the hill.

Without thinking, Wei Wuxian follows his gaze and instantly finds the Second Jade of Lan, a bright smile is quick to spread on his face and he jumps from the railing back to the bridge. Lan Zhan is standing under a plum tree, the pink petals slowly cascading and dancing along the soft breeze. Lan Zhan’s hair dances along the wind, the trails of his forehead ribbon getting lost in the sea of ebony. A few petals bounce from his head as they fall, and Wei Wuxian is amazed at how even the flowers seem to stir away from Lan Zhan. “Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan!” He calls, waving his hand to get his attention. In reality, Wei Wuxian was hoping to find him so he could properly apologize, again, for the punishment, even if it was a few days ago. If Wei Wuxian didn’t know better, it almost seemed like he was avoiding him on purpose. When he gets closer, he notices Lan Zhan talking with someone else, or more like, the other person was doing all the talking and Lan Zhan just stared at them with boredom.

‘That’s odd’, Wei Wuxian thinks. The only people who would be brave enough to talk to Lan Zhan were his brother, the elders, and Wei Wuxian himself. The Jiang head disciple tilts his head with curiosity but stays far away enough that he doesn’t break the “do not gossip” rule. Yet, he couldn’t help but want to listen to what was going on, especially since that person was bowing to Lan Zhan while offering something to him. The person was shaking while Lan Zhan stood there as rigid as he had ever seen him stand.

“You may not know this, Wei-Xiong, but Lan Zhan receives a lot of courting gifts when The Cloud Recesses invites other clans for the lectures every year.” Wei Wuxian’s brows furrow, his stomach twisting with an unknown feeling. His hands close into fists, knuckles turning white while his nails dig into his skin. “Wei-Xiong, are you alright?”

Before his mind can catch up his body has already decided to move. His blood was boiling and all he wanted to do was pull Lan Zhan away from that disciple. How can that person not tell how uncomfortable Lan Zhan is?? It’s not even that hard to notice, Lan Zhan might be an unreadable wall and cold and inflexible but… but…

No one had seen how he looked at the bunnies he had gifted him, the look of slight panic in his golden eyes when Wei Wuxian said he’d roast and eat them. It had been funny to see Lan Zhan angry at the threat, but deep down Wei Wuxian was happy he had accepted to keep them. The Jiang disciple is next to Lan Zhan and soon stands in between the two cultivators.

“Wei Ying?” Lan Zhan calls a little bit thrown off by the sudden appearance.

“Sorry Lan Zhan, didn’t realize you were still talking to—“ he eyes the other disciple who is now retreating but still holds a slight frown as they now stare at Wei Wuxian, but he has already forgotten about their existence. “Anyways, it’s time to head to the library. I still have some rules to copy, right, Lan Zhan?”

Lan Zhan’s brow knit in slight confusion, “Wei Ying does not have—”

“Right! I’m done copying the Lan Sect rules!” He said a little too loudly, and, from the corner of his eye, he could see Lan Zhan closing his eyes in annoyance. A smirk is quick to lift at the corner of his lip, his plan must be working. “Wait, didn’t I just break… OI! Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan wait!” Lan Zhan was grabbing Wei Wuxian by the back of his robe and pulling him away.

Both Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang stare at each other after witnessing the whole ordeal.

“That’s it, I’m not dealing with him anymore.” Jiang Cheng declared annoyed, throwing his hands upward. “Lan Wangji should’ve let him drown back in Billing Lake, or he’ll probably end up killing him after that and I’m not saving his ass.”

On the other hand, Nie Huaisang held a smile behind his fan. He couldn’t wait to tell Lan Xichen what he just witnessed.

A few days later, the trio walked back to classes. Wei Wuxian rubbed his arms and whined about how Lan Zhan made him do handstands while copying the Lan Rules, he had managed to copy a quarter of it before he started falling over again and again. He didn’t think Lan Zhan would take him seriously when he broke the rules, if anything he was doing him a favor.

“This is the thanks I get…” Wei Wuxian mumbles mostly to himself while he squeezes his arms to release the tension and ache in his muscles.

“Only you would expect something in return.” Jiang Cheng mentions, “Are you going to explain to me what the hell crawled up your ass yesterday?”

He tsks next to him, annoyance still evident on his face. “Whatever that disciple was saying to Lan Zhan it was making him uncomfortable. You could see it all over his face!”

“See what? Admit it already, you just wanted to annoy him.” Jiang Cheng rolls his eyes, “Will you stop messing around? You’re gonna get us kicked out if you keep this up.”

Wei Wuxian pouts but stays quiet. He wasn’t messing around, he just wanted to help. Why can’t Lan Zhan see that? He let himself fall and sit on the floor and soon leans against his desk while letting his head be propped on his hand. So much for being on Lan Zhan’s good side. His gaze falls to where Lan Zhan usually sits, and finds it weird how he’s still not here. His brows furrow and he whips his head around the classroom to look for him, but he’s nowhere to be found. Was Lan Zhan supposed to miss classes this often? Or was he still avoiding Wei Wuxian? He knew Lan Zhan had missed class the day after Wei Wuxian dropped the bunnies, but he didn’t expect to continuously miss them.

“Hey, Nie-Xiong, have you seen Lan Zhan?”

“Hm? Oh, he’s not attending classes anymore, remember?” His friend answers, his gaze briefly lifting from his book just in time to see Wei Wuxian frown. “I heard Lan Qiren sent him on a night hunt.”

“By himself?”

“Are you worried?” Nie Huaisang arches his eyebrow, encouraging him to talk.

“What? No! It’s Lan Zhan, I know he doesn’t need anyone to help him.” Wei Wuxian huffs and turns around, now facing forward. ‘ Well, class is definitely going to be boring. ’ He thinks to himself.  At least Lan Zhan can’t intercept his paperman. A sigh escapes his lips, even the thought of Lan Zhan not being here and being annoyed at him frustrates him, and why would he go on a night hunt alone and not take anyone with him? What is he trying to prove? That he’s cooler cause he can handle night hunts by himself?

A chuckle caught his attention and his eyes were soon searching for the source. It’s a group of cultivators from the Jin clan.

“Are you really going to try and get his attention?” One of the Jin cultivators said. He was the shortest amongst the group and had freckles on his face. “You’ve seen how he stares down on all of us, why risk humiliation?”

“After he sees my swordsmanship, how is he gonna decline my offer?” A brusque voice cut through, “Besides, is not like I’m actually looking for some sentimentality from him, it’s all about power. Is he even capable of feeling any— Hey!”

The guy rubs his arm while chuckling. What in the hell were they talking about?

“You’re stupid to assume Lan Wangji would even bat an eye at you, haven’t you seen how he treats Wei Wuxian?” His heart jumped in his chest, they were talking about Lan Zhan…? “Wei Wuxian can charm anyone, and not even he can get through that wall.”

“Who cares what Wei Wuxian does? Maybe Lan Wangji sees him for what he really is: a nuisance. He speaks so highly of himself and yet he can’t follow simple rules.” The cultivator snorts, “You need class and talent to impress someone like Lan Wangji. What can a servant like him accomplish anyway?”

He stops listening, this type of talk he has grown used to. Wei Wuxian couldn't care less what people had to say about him. He, however, draws the line when people talk about the people he cares about. Lan Zhan did not deserve that type of talk. He hadn’t realized his fingers were curled into fists under the table, and he was doing his best to hold himself back from unsheathing his sword on the spot. He doesn’t even notice when Lan Qiren walks in and tells the class to settle down. Wei Wuxian remains quiet for the rest of the class, which everyone found way too weird. Jiang Cheng kept glancing in his direction, concern written all over his face.

Once the class was over, Wei Wuxian stood up fast and walked towards Lan Qiren and bowed deeply.

“Master Lan, I would like to ask permission to fight one of the disciples in class.” Wei Wuxian said, his voice a little too harsh and serious which made Lan Qiren gaze at him with surprise.

A beat or two of silence went by, the Lan Master lifted his fingers and started stroking his beard in thought. “Wei Wuxian, you should know fighting is forbidden.”

“It isn’t if it is supervised.” He replied, and he should know about the Lan rules with how many times he had copied them. The cultivator bows deeper, “I wish for you, or Zewu-Jun, to supervise this fight, please.” If he has to take that Jin cultivator out of the Cloud Recesses borders then so be it because he will not let that piece of crap even attempt to take advantage of Lan Zhan behind his back.

Lan Qiren squints his eyes, it was bizarre to see Wei Wuxian acting so… proper and controlled, so unlike his carefree behavior. “Very well.” Lan Qiren decides with a nod. “I will decide when it’ll take place. Once I do, you may tell your opponent.”

He breathes out, not realizing he has been holding his breath the entire time. Wei Wuxian bows once more before taking his leave. He’ll try to practice his sword forms when everyone goes to sleep at curfew, he can’t really be slacking off now. Though, now it annoyed him that he did that punishment. As soon as he steps out of the Orchid room, a pair of hands grab him by surprise. Now he’s standing face to face with his brother.

“What the hell is up with you?!” He almost sneered.

Wei Wuxian blinks before chuckling, “Teaching the Jin’s a lesson.” And of course that didn’t make Jiang Cheng laugh, if anything it made him scowl harder. “I’m not touching the peacock! It’s one of his lackeys, he said something that annoyed me.”

The fist grabbing the outer layer of his robe relaxes, and then slowly releases the fabric. Jiang Cheng gives him another look before huffing and soon asks in a low, shaky voice. “Were they saying mean things about A-Jie again?”

“If they were, Old Man Lan wouldn’t hesitate to throw me out himself after the first time.” Wei Wuxian crossed his arms over his chest, peeved at the mere thought of someone being disrespectful towards his shijie. Yes, he had been careless and let his emotions out of control when Jin Zixuan spoke ill of Jiang Yanli, and he knows he should’ve been thrown out of the Cloud Recesses. He had expected it, actually. They had him kneel on the white gravel for hours and hours, and he thought Jiang-shushu would’ve come to get him but…

“Eh? What do you mean I don’t have to kneel anymore?” Wei Wuxian stares at the second jade of Lan, sword strap to his side and cold, golden gaze staring him down.

He must’ve heard wrong. Wei Wuxian might be aware of how bad his memory is, but he does recall Lan Qiren telling him to kneel and reflect until he set root on the white gravel underneath him. He knew it had gone too far when he started a fight with Jin Zixuan. Not like he regrets teaching that peacock a lesson.

Yet, Lan Zhan stood next to him and told him he was done with his punishment. ‘Well, this is a surprising turn of events’, he thought. He hopes it didn’t have anything to do with him playing with the anthill. Wei Wuxian briefly squints his eyes.

“Wait… you’re not tricking me into getting into another punishment, are you?” He asks warily.

The corner of Lan Zhan’s jaw ticks once before locking into place, lines form on his brow as a frown begins to set. The sleeves of his robe flutter as he turns and walks away. “Wei Ying may go back to the guest quarters when he pleases.” Lan Zhan states, his tone even and cutting. Wei Wuxian followed him with his gaze until he disappeared around the corner and was left alone once more.

Well, Lan Zhan was the disciple in charge of punishment and discipline, if he told him he was dismissed from it then it must be true. Wei Wuxian stands on his feet, dusting his robes off before taking a stroll back to the guest quarters.

Lan Zhan’s behavior was definitely off, why would he pass up the opportunity to see him punished?

Soon he’s patting his brother’s shoulder, “Aiya, don’t think about it too much! I asked for permission, didn’t I? I just want to make sure the JJinsknow what they’re doing. If shijie is gonna marry that peacock, at least I have to make sure these cultivators know what they’re doing.”

Jiang Cheng pursed his lips and then sighs, “Just stay out of trouble. I’m going to the banquet hall, you coming?”

Wei Wuxian had already started walking in the opposite direction, “Nah, I’m gonna take a walk.” And with that, he waved Jiang Cheng off. His hands were clasped behind his head while taking leisurely steps, he really had to hand it to the Lans, the Cloud Recesses really brought peace to his mind. The quietness and stillness still bothered him, it urged him to want to run and make some noise. Maybe roll down the green hills and jump in the ponds, just to disturb it. The thought of a certain someone dirtying his white robes by rolling down the hill with him almost made him go into a fit of giggles, maybe he can try and trick him into doing so.

The sun had started to set, casting a golden hue over the peaceful mountain. The thought of drawing this hit him out of nowhere, and he almost turned around to go back into the sleeping quarters when he saw two people at the very entrance of the Cloud Recesses. Of course, he could tell who the two people were. A smile is quick to draw on his face and he sets on a hurried walk. “Lan Zhan!” Wei Wuxian calls, and both Twin Jades look in his direction.

“Ah, Wei-Gongzi! Are you here to see Wangji off?” Lan Xichen says with a soft smile, unlike Lan Zhan’s who had already turned away from the two.

Oh, Lan Zhan was leaving already? His smile falters but he’s fast to recover. “Aiya, Lan Zhan! You were leaving without saying goodbye to your favorite person?”

“Shameless.” Lan Zhan snaps, the tip of his ears a soft shade of red.

Wei Wuxian chuckles as he takes a step closer while pulling something from his lapels. Lan Zhan instantly took a step back while glaring at him, but Wei Wuxian was faster. He had pulled a pair of talismans and pressed them to Lan Zhan’s hand. Lan Zhan is taken by surprise when the items are placed in his hand. He stares at the talismans for a few seconds and then redirects his gaze at Wei Wuxian, handing the talismans back. “I have plenty, thank you.”

Wei Wuxian pouts, “Lan Zhaaaan, is that any way to treat a friend? I know you’re prepared, but these ones are exclusive from the Jiang Clan.” He pushed them back towards Lan Zhan, and kept them pressed in his hand. “These ones create a shield with butterflies, it’s excellent to form a distraction and even break through wards.”

Lan Zhan stares at their hands before sighing, but at least he takes the said talismans and places them in his sleeve. “I’ll be going now.” He announces, bowing to both his brother and Wei Wuxian. If Lan Zhan’s voice sounded a little higher, no one said anything about it.

After the younger Lan walks away, Wei Wuxian finally let his smile fall. Hands clasp tightly behind his back, his fingers digging into his skin. Was he really that annoying? Were those Jin cultivators right…? It wasn’t often Wei Wuxian found himself doubting certain things about himself, but the thought that Lan Zhan might feel that way towards him… Maybe he should listen to Jiang Cheng and leave Lan Zhan alone, like he wants. But how can he when all he wants is to extend a helping hand? Why can’t he stand the thought of Lan Zhan being alone? But why should he care… it’s not like Lan Zhan cares for him, right?

“Wei-Gongzi?” Lan Xichen calls, his attention fully on him. Oddly enough Wei Wuxian feels a tinge of embarrassment, he’s quick to bring up his bright smile and shrug whatever feelings were trying to disrupt him.

“I must’ve embarrassed Lan Zhan, Huh? He was just trying to say goodbye to you and I ruined everything.” He says with a chuckle before offering a quick bow. “I’ll take my leave now. Zewu-Jun.”

“Wei-Gongzi, a word?” Lan Xichen calls softly once more, and Wei Wuxian turns on his heels to meet him. He hums in question, he wasn’t in trouble for intruding, was he? If anything, he wouldn’t be surprised if he broke ten rules just by taking a breath. “I just wanted to say thank you, on Wangji’s behalf.” The man can only chuckle at the confused look on the young one’s face. “After yesterday’s punishment, Wangji told me you stirred him away from an unwanted conversation. He did not want me to mention it to you, but it would be against my principles if I didn’t show any gratitude.”

Oh. Sudden heat creeps up his neck and settles in his cheeks. Wei Wuxian was only doing what he thought was right. He saw his friend in need and he stepped in, like any friend would. But this was not like any other friendship Wei Wuxian had ever had.

The Jiang head disciple smiles, his chest definitely feeling lighter now that he knows he did the right thing. “I noticed how uncomfortable he was… how could I not step in?”

Lan Xichen offers a soft, gentle smile. His face showed nothing but fondness. “Wangji it’s not the best at expressing what he’s thinking.” He starts, and for the first time, Wei Wuxian can see how much love Lan Xichen holds for his brother. It’s not like he didn’t know, but seeing it was definitely reassuring, in a way. “Not many people understand him, and I hope you don’t come to the same conclusion as many people tend to do.”

Brows knit together in thought. Wei Wuxian can’t help but tilt his head, the red ribbon keeping his ponytail together gently fluttering along the wind. “Zewu-Jun?”

“If you want to know, you must pay close attention. Look for what can’t be easily seen.”

Confusion crossed his face which only made Lan Xichen chuckle. ‘ What is he talking about?’ Wei Wuxian thinks. Wei Wuxian knows Lan Zhan is not one to talk or speak his mind, but he’ll admit that he took pride in getting a few reactions from Lan Zhan with his antics. The reactions might not be what Wei Wuxian was hoping for, but he knows he’s stubborn enough to keep gravitating toward the Second Jade of Lan. If anything, he was just trying to be his friend! If only people just looked and listened, Lan Zhan could be funny! If people just— Oh

Gray eyes grow wide with surprise and understanding, but by the time Wei Wuxian had figured it out Lan Xichen has walked away.

Wei Wuxian never thought the lectures could get any more boring. Without Lan Zhan around, he really had no other choice but to pay attention to what Lan Qiren had to teach, and it was killing him.

Not only that, but he had been easily annoyed by his classmates. No matter what they did, it was enough for his easygoing, optimistic aura to dim and keep everyone at arm's reach. Well, everyone except Jiang Cheng and Nei Huaisang. At least he got some people to shut up when his examination scores started ranking dangerously close to the Twin Jades.

“Are you gonna tell me why the hell you dragged us away from our group? I swear if we get in trouble—“

“Aiya, you worry too much!”

Wei Wuxian mumbled nonchalantly as he gazed at the stall with different combs, ribbons of different fabrics, and a few rattle drums. The streets in Caiyi town were bustling with life around him, vendors yelled with enthusiasm as they tried to get people interested in their goods. Girls would walk past him and Jiang Cheng, giggling to themselves before running off. It was a nice surprise when Zewu-Jun came by their guest quarters and invited them for a stroll through the lively town.

It was even more surprising when he saw Lan Zhan tagging along, which only made Wei Wuxian smile until his cheeks hurt. Of course, Lan Zhan had decided to ignore him.

Lan Zhan won’t be able to ignore him if he gets him the best gift, would he?

“Gongzi, you have been staring at my items for quite a while! Are they not to your satisfaction?” The kind auntie smiles at him.

Wei Wuxian chuckles, “Nothing of the sort! I just can’t decide what to get! All of them are too good! How can I possibly choose…”

Wei Wuxian sees Jiang Cheng shifting from the corner of his eyes. He can literally feel him rolling his eyes.

“Well, do you mind me asking who’s the lucky lady to have such a thoughtful young man like you? I recommend this jade comb right here.” The elder points at a light purple jade comb, it looked pretty expensive since it was such an unusual color for jade. The question caused the teen to blush furiously, ‘Not exactly a lady…’ he thought to himself. He brushed the question away with a chuckle and focuses on the task at hand once more. Even if he could get it, it was too excessive for what he was looking for. He hums softly in thought. Maybe he could just get the rattle drum… No, if Wei Wuxian shows up with this Lan Zhan will just glare at it, recite the rules, and throw it away.

“How about that hairpin, Wei-Xiong?” Nie Huasiang points at a very simple, light blue jade hairpin with a single lotus flower held by a thin chain. His eyes grew wide with surprise, It’s perfect! He thought. It's simple enough, it matches the Gusu-Lan colors, and Lan Zhan will have something new to wear! A wide grin stretches over his face, giddiness consuming his very existence.

“It’s perfect! I’ll take this one, please!” Wei Wuxian beams while fetching the small pouch tied to his belt, and opening it. A crease forms between his brows, Ah… maybe he should go for something smaller. He sighs, shoulders sagging in defeat. “On second thought… I-I’ll just take that red—“

Before he could finish the sentence, the owner of the stall hands him the hairpin wrapped securely in white silk wrapping. She then takes the red, silky ribbon and ties it around the white wrapping. She smiled brightly, crinkles appearing at the corner of her eyes. “One red ribbon.”

“Ah… Auntie! I-I can’t accept— Just the red ribbon, it's still perfect!” Wei Wuxian said in a hurry, handing her the right amount, for the red ribbon. It’ll have to do, it's still perfect.

“You’re a sweet one, gongzi.” She chuckles while taking the payment, “I’ve seen that look many, many times before. Whoever you decide to give this to-“ She then gently places the wrapped gift in Wei Wuxian’s hand, tapping his hand twice. “-Is extremely lucky.”

Heat settles on Wei Wuxian’s cheeks, and all he can do in response is bow deeply. Before he can say anything else, Jiang Cheng grabs him by the arm and takes him away. “They’re gonna leave without us!” His brother mumbles, the never-ending frown already being pinned on his face. “If Lan Wangji murders you for your prank, don't expect me to bury you.”

“This is not a prank!” The Jiang Head disciple pouts, though it soon disappears when his eyes land on the Twin Jades. He noticed how Lan Wangji gazed longingly at the stall with different types of Tanghulus, and an idea popped in his head.

“Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan! Let’s share a tanghulu!”

The Second Jade of Lan took a slow breath, his ears turning slightly red. “Frivolous.” Lan Zhan mumbled, tearing his golden gaze away from the desserts.

Next to him, Lan Xichen smiled warmly. “Wangji, it’s okay if you want one.”

“I do not.” Lan Zhan answers sharply before walking away, light blue robes fluttering behind him. Wei Wuxian watched him go, though, when he made sure Lan Zhan was far enough, he turned towards the stall owner and ordered two Tanghulus to go.

“Again!” He yelled while gripping Suibian tightly. Sweat beads on his forehead but the smirk on his face only grows. Wei Wuxian had been practicing his sword forms almost every night past curfew. Not like anyone noticed, especially with how everyone in the Cloud Recesses seemed to quiet down during the night.

That’s until Jiang Cheng found him out, and now they found themselves clashing swords.

Lan Qiren had come to him after class to tell him he had chosen the day to spar with the Jin cultivator. Well, he had decided that everyone in their class would benefit from sparing different sects so every student could learn what to do with an unexpected foe. Today was all about the students warming up so they could be ready for the next day.

“I can’t believe you convinced Lan Qiren to let us spar.” Jiang Cheng muses, grunting when Suibian met Sandu. Sweat rolls down his temple while his muscles tense up, attempting to throw off his brother’s balance. “Unless this is another scheme of yours—“

Wei Wuxian scoffs, “I already told you.” He twirls, movement fluid and fast like the currents of the calm Yunmeng waters. Suibian thrusts forward, jabbing in quick succession until he manages to disarm his brother. A smile threatens to lift the corner of his lips, but the pride swelling in his chest soon is smothered by his brother’s glare. Shit, he went too far again. He really needs to be more aware of holding back. He returns his sword to his scabbard and holds a callused hands up in defense. “Why don’t we take a break?”

Jiang Cheng picks up his sword from where it fell and sheathes it. “I thought you could go for a few more rounds.”

“I could.” Wei Wuxian admits, hands placed behind his head. He turns towards the rest of the sparing students, the sound of swords clashing making him feel a bit homesick. “But I don’t want to fatigue my arms when I’m gonna spar with that Jin trash.”

“Are you even going to tell us what he said?” Nie Huaisang asks from the sidelines. Wei Wuixian still doesn’t understand how he got away with not joining warm-ups. Then again, he saw how Nie Huaisang could barely lift his saber. The fan in his hand snaps open, half of his face being hidden behind the beautiful art except for expectant eyes.

“He just really pissed me off.” Wei Wuxian tsks before flicking his friend’s forehead, which earned a soft squeak from the other. “Stop making up stories in that brilliant head of yours. Like I told Jiang Cheng, I gotta make sure these so-called cultivators can protect shijie once she marries off.”

Oh, how he still hated the idea of his shijie marrying that peacock. She has always deserved the best of the best, and Jin Zixuan wasn’t it.

His eyes then captured a series of graceful movements. White and blue robes swoosh gracefully with each side step. Lan Zhan kept a schooled expression, his movements almost invisible to the eye if you didn’t know where to look. Wei Wuxian couldn’t help but be mesmerized by the gentle yet strong flow of his movements. Like the clouds dancing at the top of this peaceful mountain. His own heart skipped several beats when Lan Zhan parried his opponent with ease, and Wei Wuxian almost laughed at how bored he looked. After both cultivators bow, Wei Wuxian approaches them.

“Lan Zhan! You really are the best!” Wei Wuxian beams, bouncing on the ball of his feet. “Let’s spar tomorrow, okay?”

“Mn” Lan Zhan responds with a short nod. “Wei Ying has trained hard. I’m looking forward to it.”

A bright smile draws on his face, “Me too! Say, Lan Zhan.” Wei Wuxian moves closer to the Lan cultivator, bumping his shoulder against him. “I’ve been staying out of trouble— I have!”

Lan Zhan lifts his brow, “You have been picking fights with our classmates. That is not staying out of trouble.”

Wei Wuxian pouts at that before crossing his arms. How did he even know that? Lan Zhan is barely in their classes anymore. “Anyways! Why don’t we go pick loquats? I saw a tree next to your Cold Springs. What do you say, Lan Zhan? C’mooon, we’re already done! We have all this spare time.”

There’s a pause, and Wei Wuxian is ready to accept yet another rejection from Lan Zhan. What was he thinking? No matter what he did, Lan Zhan will always see him as nothing more than annoying. A designated sigh slips by, the Jiang cultivator getting ready to brush the idea off when, “Mn.”

He gawks momentarily at the Lan cultivator, did he hear wrong? But before he could question it, Lan Zhan had already started walking towards the path that led to the Cold Springs. Butterflies roam wildly inside his stomach, giddiness threatening to burst through his chest. Wei Wuxian lightly taps the small pouch wrapped on his belt, the hairpin sat protected in the bag. He really hopes Lan Zhan likes it. That way he’ll stop looking at Wei Wuxian with that death glare.

Wei Wuxian is quick to catch up to the Second Jade of Lan, a giggle resonates from the Jiang cultivator as he circles the other one while they walk together towards the Cold Springs.

“There’s so many of them! Lan Zhan, how come you keep this gem all to yourself?” Wei Wuxian teases while taking a bite of the many loquats on his lap. He happily munches away, his hand swiping his mouth from the excess juice. The Jiang Head disciple let his leg swing back and forth from the branch he was sitting on. “Gusu definitely has the best loquats, has the best wine. This would be the perfect place if it had lotus seed pods to pick!”

Lan Zhan sat quietly at the base of the tree, polishing Bichen. The sun had begun to set, the sky being painted with soft orange and yellow, giving off a golden glow. The rays made the water from the Cold Spring shimmer with life, and it was almost as breathtaking as the teen sitting next to him. Wei Wuxian had to admit, he had never seen anyone as attractive as Lan Zhan. Even if his own brother resembled him in every way, he still couldn’t compare. Anyone would be lucky to date him. And… he’s been scaring all his suitors away.

Well, those people were making Lan Zhan uncomfortable anyway. If they couldn’t even tell Lan Zhan felt that way, then they didn’t deserve to be near him. Or maybe they did, and Wei Wuxian was meddling where he shouldn’t. But once he remembered Lan Xichen’s words… maybe he and Lan Zhan could really be friends after all. That’s all he wanted, right? To be just friends.

“Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan, we should make this our hang-out spot. We’ve shared so many memories here.” Well, only one memory but who’s keeping count? “I see why you like it here, it’s so quiet. If only you’d come visit Lotus Pier, I can show you all the quiet places too.”

Lan Zhan directs a quiet stare, golden eyes shining with an emotion Wei Wuxian can’t really place. His cheeks heat up and he has to break the staring contest. “Lan Zhaaan, I can’t read minds, you know? I know I’m a genius, but I haven’t even developed a way to do that. Just say you’ll come to visit after the lectures.”

There’s silence and then, “No.” Before turning back to his sword. Wei Wuxian saw that coming, but he only giggles at the ever-so-serious Lan. He collects the remaining loquats into his arm and jumps from the tree branch he had climbed on.

“If you keep saying ‘no’ like that no one will want to be your friend.” Wei Wuxian reprimes while sitting next to Lan Zhan, setting the loquats in a pile between them. “Well, no one other than me! I’m pretty persistent.”

“Very.” Lan Zhan answers a little too quickly, which only causes the other to laugh.

“So, that means you don’t want to see your present?”

Wei Wuxian had never seen Lan Zhan look at him so fast, which only causes him to chuckle again. Carefully, he takes the white silk cloth tied with a red ribbon from the small pouch. His heart hammers against his chest, thrilled and terrified all at once. It’s just a gift, just like the bunnies. The bunnies he definitely did not see hanging out near the cold pond. He’ll also ignore that Lan Zhan had eaten the tanghulu he bought him the other day before going to the library.

He took a deep breath and handed the silk cloth to him. “Here. Hope you like it.”

Wei Wuxian tries not to fidget after Lan Zhan takes the gift. It didn’t help that Lan Zhan was just staring it. It made him rethink his actions. Maybe this was a bad idea, maybe he should take it back. Jiang Cheng was right, he should’ve listened to him. Trembling fingers untie the red, silky bow and lift the white cloth. A soft gasp is heard from Lan Zhan, and his ears are quick to turn a shade of bright cherry red. Lan Zhan doesn’t say anything, it almost seems like he stopped breathing altogether.

Hairpin

“Wei Ying…”

“Pretty, isn’t it?” He chimes, his hand now scratching the back of his neck. “I saw it and it looked like something you’d wear! It matches your Lan colors, and the lotus flower is to represent our friendship! Cause we’re friends, right?”

Crack. Snap! The sound seems to echo and stretch between them. It takes a moment to register what happened. Maybe Wei Wuxian was seeing things, or maybe time decided to slow down at a horrible moment. Or maybe he needed to accept that Lan Zhan would always hate him. The delicate, light blue jade hairpin had snapped in half in Lan Zhan’s hand.

Why… why did it break?

The real question was, why did Lan Zhan break it instead of just rejecting it and giving it back? Was he really that cruel? Was Wei Wuxian stupid enough to think himself dignified to be Lan Zhan’s friend?

Right… Lan Zhan really, really hated him.

A chuckle is forced out. What else he could do? Is not like it mattered. It’s not like Wei Wuxian felt his heart breaking into millions of pieces. Guess this is what he gets for being a nuisance. For not listening. The Jiang disciple stands on his feet with incredible speed, even if he feels the world spinning around. Why does his chest hurt so terribly? He should be laughing this off like he always does. Like he always should.

“Ah…” It comes out in a squeak. He swallows hard, his throat gone dry with anxiety. Wei Wuxian has to try again. “If you didn’t like it then you could’ve just given it back.”

“I—I—“ Lan Zhan stared at the now broken hairpin with horror, his breath coming out in short, fast bursts.

He should leave before he makes things worse. Wei Wuxian bows, “I-I’m sorry for disturbing you, Lan-er-gongzi—“ his voice breaks at the last part. There shouldn’t be any reason why he feels like he can’t breathe. That everything is falling apart around him. It’s normal between them, right? Wei Wuxian tries to get closer and Lan Zhan shoves him away, each time harder than the last. Jiang Cheng was right, this was a stupid idea. Before unwanted tears can spill down his cheeks the Jiang Head disciple turns and runs away, ignoring Lan Zhan’s voice calling for him. Probably to yell at him for running.

It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter anymore.

He never learns, does he?

Everything happens in a blur, he loses track of where he was running to. Well, it’s not like Wei Wuxian had anywhere to hide. This wasn’t Lotus Pier, after all. He could leave the Cloud Recesses altogether, find a lake, and go for a swim. Swimming always calmed him down, it made him forget the ache in his heart and body, and it helped calm his racing thoughts when words seemed to fail. But he wasn’t home…

Pathetic couldn’t even amount to describe how he felt, how he looked. How he cursed loudly when he tripped over his two feet and fell. Since when he let a rejection throw him off balance, to make his chest feel so tight he was sure there was nothing left in it. Wei Wuxian clenched his fist on the soft grass before releasing it in defeat. He stands on his own feet, dusting his robes before heading back to the guest quarters.

Pathetic. Stupid. Lan Zhan probably thought you were proposing to him or something. Because that’s what everyone has been doing ever since the lectures started. Maybe he had misunderstood what Lan Xichen had said. Wei Wuxian finally reached the guest room, the sun had already set and the sky had let the stars scatter across it. Wei Wuxian takes a shaky breath, urging his racing heart to calm down and the tears to stay at bay. He’s not a maiden with a broken heart. There’s no broken heart to worry about anyway. One thing is for sure, from this moment forward he’ll stay away from Lan Zhan, like he should have ever since they met.

Trembling hands slide the door open, and both his brother and Nie Huaisang chatter away. None of them seemed to notice him coming back, and he would rather keep it that way. As quietly as he can, Wei Wuxian sneaks into his own bed and covers himself with the soft blankets. Maybe he’ll get struck by lightning and die.

“Wei Wuxian?” He flinches when Jiang Cheng calls his name, and he has to take a few calming breaths before uncovering himself and grinning widely at his brother.

“Hey.”

“Where have you been? You missed dinner, again.” Jiang Cheng scolds, “If A-Jie finds out that you’re skipping your meals you won’t hear the end of it.”

“I just wanted to go on a walk.” Wei Wuxian replies as casually as he can. “I wasn’t really hungry—“

“Spit it out, what’s wrong.” Jiang Cheng interrupts, examining him with incredulous eyes. “You’re always in the mood to eat, even if the food here is bland.”

“Nothing! Nothing, I just— I wasn’t…”

“What did Lan Wangji do? Did he punish you again? Tsks, how many times have I told you to stop pestering him!”

“Jiang Cheng.” Nie Huaisang calls, moving closer to both siblings. Eyes scan Wei Wuxian with caution and soon his brows furrow. “Wei-Xiong… did something happen with Lan Wangji?”

“Ah… Of course not! I-I just annoyed him a little bit. Look guys…” Wei Wuxian sighs while untying the worn-out red ribbon and letting his hair fall like an ebony waterfall over his shoulders. Now that his hair was covering most of his face he let his smile fall. He turns his back towards the other two and covers himself once more. “I’m really tired. I wanna rest as much as I can for tomorrow.”

Jiang Cheng was about to press further but Nei Huaisand stopped him, shaking his head. The Jiang heir sighs and walks away from his brother's side of the room. Nie Huaisang on the other hand, couldn’t help but look at Wei Wuxian’s back in concern. He knew where he had gone, he knew what he was going to do.

Nie Huaisang had noticed how golden eyes followed Wei Wuxian’s every movement. Had noticed how the Second Jade of Lan would converse with his older brother to take their group down to Caiyi town because he knew Wei Wuxian wanted out of the Cloud Recesses. He had noticed how Lan Wangji’s food had only a spec of color red. So he asks himself, what in the world happened between the two? Yes, both of them often looked like they didn’t get along at all. Fire and ice. Oil and water. But that was just the surface of everything. Or at least that’s what Zewu-Jun would say.

The three of them went to sleep, and if Jiang Cheng ripped part of his blanket when he heard the muffled sobs from his brother then no one seemed to notice.

“Where in the world is that boy… we cannot begin class if he doesn’t show up!” Lan Qiren mumbled, irritation dripping into his every word. “I can’t believe I let that mess of a boy talk me into this.”

“Perhaps he’s overslept.” Lan Xichen tried to reassure with a smile before directing a brief glance at his brother. Lan Wangji shakes his head slightly.

Lan Wangji had gone to the guest quarters when he didn’t see Wei Wuxian join them for breakfast and the beginning of class. How he had stood in front of the door, not knowing if to knock or just leave. How he heard soft sniffles from the other side.

His grip tightens around Bichen.

“I told you, Wei Wuxian is a coward.” The brusque Jin cultivator chuckles. “He challenged me for what? To back down at the last minute. Tsk, some head disciple the Jiangs have.”

Jiang Cheng closes his fist, and before he can take a step Nei Huaisang stops him. He scoffs before crossing his arms, no wonder Wei Wuxian wanted to teach this guy a lesson. The students soon start murmuring to each other and Wei Wuxian comes through the crowd. The Jiang cultivator is quiet and composed, the complete opposite to his loud and carefree nature. He walks with determined steps toward Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen, and soon he bows.

“I apologize for being late.” Wei Wuxian straightens, eyes scanning the crowd. When he sees Lan Zhan his eyes widen slightly and then looks away. Looks at both Lan’s in front of him. “I would still like to proceed with the challenge, if Master Lan allows it.”

Lan Qiren can’t help but to feel stunned at how the boy is behaving. Stunned really didn’t even cut it. He had grown so used to his disruptive and chaotic energy that he never thought Wei Wuxian could have such a side to him. The teacher huffs softly and nods, “Very well. Jin Qiang, step forward.”

Jin Qiang steps forward with a dark grin. Wei Wuxian can only roll his eyes at the asshole in front of him, which he already forgot his name. People like Jin Qiang are all bark and no bite, and he’ll make sure to wipe that idiotic grin off his face. It kinda hurt to remember why he was doing this, for who he was doing this. Grey eyes glance to where he knows Lan Zhan is standing, and he regrets it because he knows Lan Zhan would never look at him with worry. Wei Wuxian lightly shakes his head, regaining his focus as he unsheathes Suibian. The glare of his sword is bright red, matching the cultivator’s contained emotions.

“Remember, this duel is for the sake of learning. It’ll help all of you learn how to think critically in moments of danger.” Zewu-Jun comments as he takes a step between the two young cultivators. “Be fair. The duel ends when either of you forfeits or gets disarmed.”

Jin Qiang scoffs, “Trust me, this won’t last more than 5 minutes.”

Wei Wuxian doesn’t reply, which sends chills down everyone’s spines. His eyes are sharp, focused on his opponent. ‘Make it two minutes. Your stance is so out of balance.’ Wei Wuxian thought to himself as Jin Qiang took out his sword. He takes a defensive stance, holding Suibian in front of him. His hand tightens around the hilt of his spiritual sword, eyes never leaving his opponent.

And then his smiles.

Jin Qiang throws himself at him, his sword disturbing the dust as he drags it in an attempt to strike an uppercut. A spark runs through him when their swords clash, Wei Wuxian parrying the attack with ease. The other staggers back, his face turning red with anger, but that only makes Wei Wuxian smirk with well-known victory.

Now that he had disturbed the bees' nest, Jin Qiang’s movements were erratic. Jin Qiang twirls and it comes with a slash which Wei Wuxian dodges with ease and quick side steps, his feet light as morning dew drops sliding from lotus flowers into the lake. He notices an opening, and his smile only grows. He twists his sword, swinging swiftly yet putting all his strength into it. Like the calm, warm water currents of the Yunmeng river. If this were a night hunt, Wei Wuxian would be able to chop a corpse's head in a clean cut. He controls how the sword flows only at the last second, just enough to knock the other’s sword out of his hand. It flies off and lands right outside of what is considered their fighting ring.

The crowd is stunned silent when the fight is over. In reality, it was over before it even started. The Jiang disciples cheer in a loud roar, sending praises towards their shixiong. Jiang Cheng was clapping, shaking his head as he mumbled “Show off.” But that didn’t stop the pride swelling in his chest. The rest of the disciples murmured amongst themselves. Whispers of, “Wow, Wei Wuxian is really talented.” “I never thought Wei Wuxian to be so graceful with the sword, you can barely tell with how much he slacks off.” “Amazing, truly amazing!”

Somewhere in the crowd, Lan Zhan had seen the duel with fascination. He had fought with Wei Wuxian before, but to see it from the sidelines. The way he had transformed and become one with water. So fluent and fast, calm yet dangerous. His eyes had that fire he had seen when they first clashed swords, but he could even tell it was dulled through the exchange. His hand shakes as it forms into a fist, he needs to talk to him after the spar session is over.

Wei Wuxian sighs, placing Suibian on his shoulder before flipping his ponytail. His eyes are cast with boredom as he stares at the Jin cultivator. “Three moves, that’s a new record, even for me.” A chuckle resonates within his chest, “Didn’t you say this would be over in 5 minutes? It felt like I took your sword down in less than a minute.”

“You—!”

“Now, now.” Wei Wuxian chastised while sheathing Suibian, a mocking smile drew on his face. “Zewu-Jun was clear with the rules. I disarmed you. You lost.”

“I demand a rematch! You definitely cheated, I just know it!” Jin Qiang almost yells, but Wei Wuxian had already given his back to the other. “You damn servant, I’ll show you—“

Jin Qiang throws a punch, but Wei Wuxian dodges it with much ease. He grabs his arm pinning it behind his back and squeezes it, causing the other to cry in pain. When he makes sure Jin Qiang won’t move, he kicks his leg and forces him to kneel. Wei Wuxian tsks, “Attacking behind my back? That’s not very honorable of you. Speaking of which.” He goes on one knee beside the Jin cultivator and whispers next to his ear. “You better apologize to Lan Zhan.”

“What?! Why do I need to apologize?! I have never disrespected Lan-er-gongzi— AH!”

“Let me refresh your memory, Hm? Something about… Lan Zhan not being capable of emotions? Wanting to play him into a possible marriage?!” Wei Wuxian bites every word, “You speak of him as if he’s a thing and not human. A tool, a stepping stone you can greedily use.”

He stands once more, grabbing Jin Qiang by the back of his robes and dragging him in front of Lan Zhan, forcing him to kneel once more. The crowd takes a step back once Jin Qiang hits the ground, everyone except for Lan Zhan himself. He stared with wide eyes at the kneeling cultivator and back to Wei Wuxian, and he ignores how that look makes his heart skip. “Apologize to Lan-er-gongzi, now .”

“Okay, okay! I-I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I’ve disrespected Lan-er-gongzi! I beg for forgiveness!” Jin Qiang cries out.

Wei Wuxian hums with satisfaction, “That’s more like it…” he whispers before releasing his hold on Jin Qiang. For a brief moment, he and Lan Zhan meet eye to eye. He wants to laugh at how surprised he looks, it’s definitely deserving of plenty of teasing. But remembering what happened the previous day… It's best if Wei Wuxian keeps his distance. He walks towards the still stunned Lan Qiren and Zewu-Jun, and bows. “If I may be excused.”

He didn't wait for an answer, and he was already walking away. The crowd of students gets out of his way, creating a path for him to walk on. “Wei Ying!” Someone calls, his steps coming to a stop. Wei Wuxian turns around and sees Lan Zhan standing a few feet behind him. “We still need to spar.”

“Ah, Lan Zh— Lan-er-gongzi,” Wei Wuxian let out a dry chuckle, crossing his arms above his chest with his sword in hand. “I only had one challenger.”

“Then, I challenge you.” Lan Zhan responds, taking a few strides to reach the Jiang Head disciple. “I challenge Wei Ying.”

Wei Wuxian sighs with frustration, why is Lan Zhan doing this? Didn’t he make his message clear the night before? “Lan-er—“

His sentence is cut short when sharp eyes notices a blue glare from the corner of his eye. Immediately, Wei Wuxian drew Suibian out of his scabbard. Driven by pure instinct, he places the blade near Lan Zhan’s throat while Bichen does the same on his own throat. Both teens stare at each other, wide-eyed, defiant, and with utter disbelief.

“Wangji!” They both hear Lan Xichen call, because they know Lan Zhan drew his sword first.

“What the fuck, Lan Zhan?! What the actual—“ Wei Wuxian said almost breathless, anger slowly simmering within his chest.

Spar. With. Me. ” Lan Zhan enunciates each word. Determination burns within his golden eyes, something Wei Wuxian hadn’t seen before.

He breathes out a chuckle full of disbelief. Not fully a chuckle but more like a scoff. “You want to fight? Fine!” He doesn’t give Lan Zhan a warning, his blade moves upward, pushing Lan Zhan’s blade away from his own throat before turning in a full circle.

Before Lan Zhan can recover, Wei Wuxian slashes forward, his sword meeting Bichen. Lan Zhan had taken a defensive stance, so that only meant Wei Wuxian needed to move quick. He thrusts forward and cuts through every small opening it was given to him, but each time Suibian would harshly clash with Bichen, both blue and red glares flaring as they did. Wei Wuxian twirls, gaining momentum as he slashes with extreme force and speed to only be stopped with a parry. It’s not enough to throw him off balance, but it’s enough for something in him to ignite the fire in his heart.

This time, Lan Zhan throws an attack and Wei Wuxian can only huff a laugh. He dodges the attack and quickly attempts to swipe Lan Zhan’s feet, but Wei Wuxian is surprised when the Lan cultivator jumps a millisecond before his feet make contact. A hand pressed lightly on his back, and he looks up just in time to see white robes covering the sky, Lan Zhan using his body as leverage to move behind him. Before Lan Zhan could touch the ground, Wei Wuxian was already running towards the other, ready to strike once more.

However, the Second Jade of Lan dodges him by jumping to one of the rooftops and he doesn’t waste time following after him.

Once Lan Zhan recovers his footing he is met by another relentless strike. He had never seen Wei Wuxian like this, the endless emotions swimming in his razor-sharp silver eyes. The smiling boy who rivals the sun itself now came after him like a raging hurricane. His movements, which are always smooth and calm like the lotus lake from his home, now were unpredictable and sharp. Strong like the waters raging through a canal too small for the torrential waters, dragging anything and everything on its pathway.

From the first strike, Lan Zhan knew he had to take a defensive approach. Every strike, every slash had come in rapid successions, not leaving any room for an opening, not even to breathe. He had never met someone who could move that fast, it had always been his brother who matched his skills. He knew how fluent the Jiang sword forms were, he had read how each movement followed the flow of calm, warm waters of the Yunmeng river. But, that’s what made them the most unpredictable. Jiang disciples followed one rule when it came to sword forms, and it was to always go with the flow and never against it, for if you did you risked getting drowned by the strong current.

And Wei Ying… Wei Ying’s forms were of monsoon, one that had been brewing and aching to be set free. There was no way for him to attack, he had to go with every single form and defend. Every single emotion pours in every blow, and Lan Zhan is there to receive it. This dance they shared, was so unlike the one from the very first time Lan Zhan laid eyes on this chaotic being, someone unbound by the rules. This dance was unpredictable, yet graceful and beautiful. The red ribbon attached to his ponytail danced with him, the vibrant red almost matching the fire set ablaze in Wei Ying’s eyes.

For a moment, Lan Zhan wondered if this is what it should feel to fight against a Martial God.

How did someone like that ever catch Lan Zhan’s attention? How did someone like that manage to be an ever-present distraction in his daily life? How did Lan Zhan go from disliking this boy to wanting to be by his side?

Wei Wuxian is driven by pure instinct, for the first time he doesn’t have to worry about holding back. He should… he should hold back because it’s the right thing to do. When Suibian and Bichen clash once more, the blades singing as they slide against each other, is when he finally notices Lan Zhan’s grip trembling. Lan Zhan was struggling to deflect him off. Panic causes his grip to falter, now knowing he has gone too far. His thoughts spiral for a moment, but Lan Zhan’s voice cuts through the sudden fog.

“Don’t. Do not give up.” Lan Zhan whispers sharply, his eyes glaring intently even if his hand was visibly shaking. “Wei Ying .”

This was supposed to be encouraging. If it had happened another time, Wei Wuxian would have smiled and let his cockiness shine through. He would tease, he would make Lan Zhan promise that he could handle the storm he was about to unleash. But it only makes him scowl, silver eyes glaring daggers back to golden ones. He didn’t want to do this anymore, he needed to leave. Why won’t Lan Zhan let him leave?

Wei Wuxian uses his sword to shove Lan Zhan away.

His breathing is ragged, it feels like they’ve been fighting for hours but he knows it’s been less than 20 minutes. Wei Wuxian’s fingers tighten around Suibian’s hilt. “I forf—“ he begins, but Lan Zhan launches himself at him, taking the offense for the first time since their swords collided, which only causes Wei Wuxian to yell in frustration as he sidesteps in a quick manner to escape Bichen’s strike. He whirls once, twice slicing the air between them with each turn. A warning to keep Lan Zhan away, but the Lan cultivator parries every slice and dodges each stab.

Why won’t he give up!? Is he so set on humiliating him?! On showing everyone how his rejection hurt his very soul?! How weak he must seem to everyone’s eyes? The Grand Head Disciple of Yunmeng Jiang, crying because his gift got rejected. What a joke—

Slash. Stab. Strike. Faster. Faster. I need to go faster!

His movements become a blur, daring to step over the line he has firmly drawn when he gets too immersed into a fight. He can’t stop, won’t stop until Lan Zhan lets him step out. Back out, back out, just back out!

His sword seems to move on its own, thrusting forward before twisting his wrist and moving upward. And then he sees it… the sword with the blue glare flying and landing on the ground below them. The world comes rushing back to him, feeling disoriented when he realizes that he and Lan Zhan had closed everyone off and created a world just where the two of them existed.

He… he disarmed Lan Zhan…

Silver eyes connect with Lan Zhan, And that’s when he sees it. Wei Wuxian staggers back, hand trembling nonstop as exhaustion begins to settle deep in his muscles. Crimson trickles in a thin line, the color so vibrant against Lan Zhan’s pale complexion it almost seems like a crime. It was unsettling, to see such a big splash of color on him. He had cut his cheek. He drew blood… Why did no one stop him?! He snaps his head around, making eye contact with Lan Xichen and Lan Qiren who were just as shocked as he was.

Disbelief crosses his face when he returns his gaze to Lan Zhan who is also trying to catch his breath, yet looks so unbothered by the blood. Aside from the blood dribbling from his cut, his hair looked just fluffed enough to be considered extremely disheveled. Shakily, he sheathes Suibian away and jumps from the roof to the ground. He almost loses his balance once he lands, but he doesn’t care. Not when everyone is staring at him like he grew another head. It shouldn’t bother him, Wei Wuxian had grown used to these types of looks, but when he looked at Jiang Cheng, the utter bafflement on his face. He knew… he knew he had taken it way too far.

He hears Lan Zhan landing behind him and the shing sound of Bichen being sheathed away. “Wei Ying—“

“Haven't you had enough?” Wei Wuxian snaps, keeping his back towards the other. The words were heavy and contained with emotion. He grits his teeth, forcing the words out. “I’m. Done.”

Lan Zhan closes his hands into fists, knuckles turning white. Before he could open his mouth to call out for the teen in front of him, he had already set on a run.

“Wei Wuxian!” Jiang Cheng called from the crowd, pushing himself through. His purple eyes made contact with Lan Zhan, and the question in them made his first tremble. What the Fuck did you do to my brother? Jiang Cheng kept calling after his brother while setting off in a very light jog.

It had been hours since the fight had happened. People kept calling for him, but soon the numerous voices dwelled down until there was none. He knows he’s being childish, hiding away from his problems like this. Gods, what wouldn’t he give to be with his shijie now. He’d be eating her famous lotus root and pork rib soup, the soup that could cure anything from stomach aches to broken hearts.

Broken heart… is that what he has?

His arms wrap tighter around his legs, pulling them closer to his chest in an attempt to make himself smaller. He was grateful for the sturdy tree and its thick, green foliage for aiding in keeping him hidden. He was also glad no one bothered to search up the trees to look for him. His head now rests on top of his knees and sighs softly. The sun had already set and the stars began blinking into existence. How in the world did Wei Wuxian get away with hiding almost all day?

Maybe he’ll get away with staying up here until the end of the year.

A set of footsteps climb the gravel path and instinctively Wei Wuxian shrinks into himself to remain hidden. He doesn’t bother lifting his head, it’s already embarrassing enough that he’s hiding, there’s no need to take notice of his red-rimmed eyes either. The stranger stops just a few steps from the tree, and then there’s quiet. Wei Wuxian almost believes he had imagined the whole thing when, “Wei Ying…?”

He sucks in a breath, why is Lan Zhan here? Maybe if he pretends he didn’t hear him he’ll go away.

“Wei Ying, come down.” Lan Zhan tries to coax softly.

‘Up your ass, Lan Zhan.’ He would’ve said, but he keeps his mouth shut. Wei Wuxian might be a menace but he would never be able to talk to Lan Zhan that way. Not even if Lan Zhan is the cause of him acting that way. Instead, he curls further into himself.

Silence stretched between them, and Wei Wuxian was sure Lan Zhan left after receiving no answer. Of course, he was wrong to assume so, because Lan Zhan seemed to shuffle closer. If Wei Wuxian didn’t know better he could even pick up a hint of nervousness and awkwardness from the air. Is this how things are gonna be from now on? Awkward? Well, if anything it should just go back to being normal. The normal Lan Zhan knew before he met Wei Wuxian. How come now that Wei Wuxian was giving what Lan Zhan wanted, the other wanted to stay even closer?

It was all so… confusing.

“Wei Ying didn’t come to dinner.” Lan Zhan started but didn't continue.

Wei Wuxian sighs before mumbling, “I’m not hungry.” And just as if the world was out to betray him, his stomach growled loudly in that exact moment.

“Wei Ying has not eaten at all today.”

He sighs once more, this time with a bit more frustration. “I don’t—“ He finally let himself unfold from his tight hold, his leg now dangling from the branch he was sitting on. “Why are you here, Lan Zhan?” Wei Wuxian settles, finally directing his gaze toward the other teen.

Silver eyes widened slightly. Lan Zhan stood there, his golden gaze glued to the tray in his hands. There was nothing grand about the view, except the food on the tray was food brought from Caiyi town. Wei Wuxian knew that because the food had way more color than the bland, colorless food served in Cloud Recesses. From where he sat, he could tell it was spicy tofu with string beans, and a small, steamy bowl of rice next to it. Now that he had laid eyes on the food, his stomach growled even louder and his mouth had watered.

No… This is all wrong. Why is Lan Zhan coming to him with food? Why is Lan Zhan wanting to talk to him now? Wei Wuxian is giving him what he desperately wanted. Does he feel guilty for rejecting his gift? Or is it just a sick, cruel way to get back at him for annoying him during all these months? This is all so confusing and it’s starting to give him a headache.

“What…” Wei Wuxian starts, he shakes his head before turning his body towards Lan Zhan. One hand rests on the branch for support while the other one brushes his bangs off of his face. “W-What are you trying to accomplish here? I’ve been trying to be your friend ever since I got here and all you’ve done is push me away, or punish me or-or glare at me like you’re trying to blow up my head with your mind.”

Wei Wuxian takes a shaky breath before throwing his head back in a weak laugh. “I give you gifts and you toss them away. I— I don’t get it. I mean, I do. I know I’m annoying and loud, but my intention has always been to be your friend. Clearly, you despise me. It’s not hard to miss, but you know, I figured maybe I was missing something. But now… now that I’m giving you the space you want, you come… you make me spar with you. You push me over the line . I hurt you. He shudders, the memory of the cut with the thin line of blood still vivid in his mind. “For fucks sake, you brought me food from Caiyi town when you relentlessly drilled in my head that all I could have was bland food for the remaining months…”

Cold breeze caressed his cheek while it made the leaves dance and flutter along with it. His gaze returns to the Lan cultivator, “I don’t get it… I don’t know what you want from me, Lan Zhan. You want me to stay away. You humiliate me. Yet, you bring me food— why did you bring me food, Lan Zhan? Why did you come and find me, why? Why are you suddenly pretending to care?!”

Wei Wuxian covers his mouth after realizing what he said. He shouldn’t have… what the hell is wrong with him! Why did this affect him so much, why is he acting this way?! He has always been able to keep his emotions in control, he’s had to for the sake of everyone. Why are his walls crumbling just because of this one incident? Guilt gnaws at his stomach when he realizes the state Lan Zhan was in, standing rigidly, lips pressed together and breath stuttering. All this time he had been lashing out with no regard of how it might make Lan Zhan feel. This… this was so unlike himself, and Wei Wuxian hates it.

“Wei Ying… I—“ Lan Zhan’s voice rings through the silence, and he’s visibly struggling to find the next set of words.

At the end, Wei Wuxian sighs with resignation and pulls his knees up to his chest once more. “Forget I said anything, okay? I just… I need to be alone.”

“Wei Ying—” Lan Zhan tried again, but Wei Wuxian cuts him fast.

“Please… just, go away..” he mumbles while tucking his head in his arms.

Lan Zhan inhales sharply, but soon follows Wei Wuxian’s request. Careful not to spill anything, Lan Zhan sets the tray with the now cold food at the base of the tree where he sat the previous day. Even if Wei Wuxian can’t see him, he still takes a courtly bow and reluctantly walks away.

It had been three weeks since the sparring incident,  the calming and grounding air around the mountain had become heavy with tension. Wei Wuxian had been awfully quiet and reserved, and it was way too off putting for everyone to witness.

Lan Zhan on the other hand, looked colder than the harshest winter in Gusu. Just by looking at him it would feel like icicles would prickle your skin and set ice on your bones. It definitely urged people to stay away from him more than usual. Even in class, when he was asked a question he would remain quiet.

The first week of this predicament, Wei Wuxian had formed a routine of disappearing after leaving class, all the way till nightfall. At first, it was believed he was sneaking out past curfew and staying out in Caiyi town until dawn, but the theory was debunked at the lack of jars of Emperor’s Smile. And if Wei Wuxian were sneaking out, there wouldn’t be need for the blank expression he had seemed to adopt.

Nie Huaisang had followed him as stealthy as he could, after noticing the Jiang head disciple following the path towards the Cold Spring. He found it extremely strange, especially since the Cold Springs were off limits to guests. So he followed, but every time he managed to reach the top it seemed Wei Wuxian would disappear into thin air. With defeat hanging over his head, Nie Huaisang returned to their shared room, though from the corner of his eye he would see Lan Wangji climbing the same path as Wei Wuxian had previously, with a tray of food in hand.

It made the teen confused, but decided to leave it be. Nie Huaisang wasn’t ready to approach the Lan cultivator, not without knowing how to keep his cool. He knew that whatever had caused Wei Wuxian’s mood to decline, Lan Wangji had a big part in it.

There was a point where Wei Wuxian willingly took punishment for breaking the rules of sparing. It was rumored Lan Zhan had tried to revoke the punishment, since Lan Zhan had been the one to push Wei Wuxian over the limit. But Wei Wuxian still wrote several copies of the rules and delivered them to Lan Qiren every day after class.

In the second week, both Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang had taken turns on trying to get Wei Wuxian to come with them to Caiyi town. Every time, they were both turned down from the idea with excuses becoming more absurd each time. But none of them missed how Wei Wuxian would anxiously look out the window of their shared room in search for someone. It didn’t take a genius to know Wei Wuxian was avoiding the Second Jade of Lan.

It almost seemed like the roles have been revered by a curse. Lan Wangji would discreetly stroll near the guest quarters around the time Wei Wuxian would usually wake up, and once Wei Wuxian would show himself then Lan wangji would go on about his day. Although, Nie Huaisang could only gently tap his own forehead with his fan at how obvious the Lan was being.

“How long are they going to keep this up? It’s seriously starting to freak me out.” Jiang Cheng mumbled to Nie Huaisang as they walked out of their history lecture.

“I’m not sure.” Nie Huaisang said with a sigh, his eyes lingered on Wei Wuxian’s back as he walked up the path towards the Cold Spring.

One day, Nie Huaisang had been able to get Wei Wuxian to accompany him in one of his strolls though they just ended up sitting at one of the most secluded pavilions.

“Maybe it’s time both of you talk it out? Maybe it was a misunderstanding, after all?” Nie Huaisang suggest, and flinches when Wei Wuxian scoffs in response.

“And what do you suggest I tell him?”

“Perhaps, admit certain things and certain feelings.”

Wei Wuxian faced forward, a smile drenched on defeat on his face. “Admit what? That I got my heart broken by the untouchable Second Jade of Lan? That I… That I have been mad at everyone that caught his attention, so I had to fight them off? Admit that I haven’t stopped thinking about teasing him and bringing him to Lotus Pier ever since he caught me breaking the rules? That I’ve been breaking the rules on purpose just to be around him?”

He sighs in resignation before burying his face in his hands. “That I got him that hairpin cause I wanted my gift to be the reason why he let himself smile…?”

The other’s heart tightens in his chest. Nie Huaisang never thought his Wei-Xiong felt so deeply. “Wei-Xiong…”

“But who cares, right? Jiang Cheng was right about that, it was a dumb idea. I should’ve known Lan Zhan was going to reject it.” Wei Wuxian then stands quickly, brows slightly furrowed. Right ahead, Lan Zhan stood frozen while he gazed at Wei Wuxian, honey eyes slightly wide. Before Lan Zhan could move an inch, Wei Wuxian had already turned and walked away. It’s a minimal movement, but Lan Zhan’s shoulders had dipped only a little as he turned away from the Nie second heir and walked away. Nie Huaisang swears he saw Lan Zhan kick a small rock before continuing on his merry way.

After that, Jiang Cheng had tried to coax him into having his meals by using the worry Wei Wuxian would cause Jiang Yanli. It was a given, despite the distance, that the martial older sister could tell something was wrong with her younger martial brother based on the letters exchanged between the two. However, it would only agitate Wei Wuxian every time Jiang Cheng brought the topic up.

“Are you really okay worrying A-Jie like this?” Jiang Cheng had said one night, “Whatever happened between you and Lan Wangji shouldn’t make you act like an idiot and worry the people that care about you. So what if Lan Wangji hates you? He hates everyone, it shouldn’t matter—“

Both of Wei Wuxian’s hands slammed the table. The stack of talismans he was working on falling to the floor. He takes a steadying breath. “I’m going for a walk.” He announced, standing and rushing past Jiang Cheng and out of the room.

The Nie second heir smacked him plenty with his fan that night.

By the third week, everything went from tense to painfully pitiful. Lan Xichen had summoned Nie Huaisang for tea, and it was obvious what he wanted to talk about when there was clear worry etching on his face.

“I have never seen Wangji so… hopeless.” He mentions with a sigh before taking a sip of his tea. “It concerns me that we might’ve incorrectly perceived their intentions.”

Nie Huaisang sets his fan down on the tea table and picks up the tea cup, “You and I have seen what we’ve seen. You know Lan Wangji better than anyone, Xichen-ge.” He sighs, shaking his head. “If Wei-Xiong didn’t care for Lan Wangji, he wouldn’t have challenged Jin Qiang the way he did. If Lan Wangji didn’t have any affection for Wei-Xiong, he wouldn’t be bringing him dinner from Caiyi town almost every night for the past three weeks.”

They both fall silent for a moment, the soft clinking of the tea cups filling the room as they’re set down. “Has Wei-Gongzi at least come out of the room you and Jiang-Gongzi share?”

“More often now. At least Jiang-Xiong stopped yelling at him about moping around. Xichen-ge, he really hurt Wei-Xiong. You assured me that Lan Zhan would’ve accepted the gift.” Nie Huaisang says, eyes cast down to the cup of tea. “I know I’ve only met Wei-Xiong for a few months… but he has been nothing but kind and more than supportive to me. He’s the only one who doesn’t talk down to me, and because he is my friend I can’t feel sorry for Lan Zhan. I can’t really pity him when Wei-Xiong has been miserable and isolating himself for what he did.”

Lan Xichen nods courtly, “I understand, Huaisang. However, Wangji did accept it. I just never thought…” There’s a pause for a moment, resignation making his shoulders dip. “I will admit, it is very unnerving to see Wei-gongzi so… reserved.”

Nei Huaisang picks his fan once more, gently tapping his chin in thought. “I may have a plan of how to get them to talk. This has gone on for far too long. Wei-Xiong won’t let Lan Zhan talk to him, and Lan Zhan won’t make the first move.”

Lan Xichen lifts his eyebrow in question, “What do you propose, Huaisang?”

“Leave it all to me, Xichen-ge.” Nei Huaisang said with a knowing smirk.

The Jiang teen climbed up the wall with much expertise, the contents in the jar quietly slushing with his every movement. He has to admit, he missed sneaking out the Cloud Recesses past curfew. He forgot how the thrill of it felt like. Wei Wuxian lands with quiet steps on top of the tiled wall, assessing his surroundings and making sure he’s on the clear. Nei Huaisang had begged Wei Wuxian to go get Emperor’s Smiles to celebrate Nie Huaisang passing his first exam ever. He didn’t have the heart to just decline, and how could he when he and Jiang Cheng had to deal with his moody ass for the past three weeks.

Wei Wuxian had a lot of time to think about everything that happened between him and Lan Zhan. It is safe to assume that he had overreacted to everything.

Even know, he couldn’t quite understand why he had reacted the way he had. Yes, the fact that Lan Zhan had broken the hairpin still caused a sharp ache to his chest, and he still felt horrible for drawing blood during their duel but now that his mind had cleared and his emotions were settled once more… he had really acted irrationally.

Wei Wuxian still felt overwhelming satisfaction for making Jin Qiang beg for forgiveness.

He breathes out as he takes a seat on the tiled roof, setting the jar by his side while he admires the calm scenery the Cloud Recesses had to offer. There was no beauty that compared to his Lotus Pier, and for the past few months he had dearly missed the humid nights that would push him to go on a swim while gazing at the stars. He missed hearing the night critters sing him lullabies as he drifted off to sleep. He missed walking down the busy streets, enthusiastically saying hi to the vendors. Yet… something about the calmness, the stillness and quietness of the mountain had grown on him.

Every time he found himself aimlessly walking through the mountain, he found little spots to hang out in. For the past three weeks that’s all he did after every lecture, he found hidden waterfalls and ponds. Hidden clearings and meadows which he had shamelessly taken a few naps on. Only then he understood why Lan Zhan was so enamored with the place he grew up in.

Every now and then he’d wonder, if he and Lan Zhan didn’t have their fallout, would Lan Zhan show him these little, hidden gems?

He wonders if Lan Zhan wants to be friends, at all.

It really had been three weeks since they both addressed each other. Wei Wuxian recalls, every other day, Lan Zhan leaving dinner for him at the base of the loquat tree he had clearly claimed as his own. There were some days, to his surprise, Lan Zhan would stay and sit at the base for a few hours, wether it was to meditate or simply read. That was until Wei Wuxian, unreasonably, snapped at him to go away.

He recalls, during class, he felt eyes on him at all times. A golden gaze resting on his back while he did his best to ignore it. It was almost unbearable, and there were times Wei Wuxian wanted to look back because deep down he that’s all he ever wanted from the Lan cultivator. For him to look at Wei Wuxian. He hated himself for wanting to look back.

At the end, Lan Qiren had still punished Wei Wuxian for breaking the rules of dueling, so once again he had to copy the Lan rules a few hundred times. What Wei Wuxian didn’t expect was Lan Zhan intervining on his behalf. Claiming that he should be the one to be punished, not Wei Wuxian. And if Wei Wuxian still carried on with his punishment, to let him share it. Wei Wuxian did by oppose, and Lan Qiren seemed to have his hands tied, so Lan Zhan served his punishment with Wei Wuxian. It was just like the first time he had copy the rules, only this time Lan Zhan did not oversee the punishment.

At that point, the anger and hurt Wei Wuxian felt towards the younger Twin Jade had slowly dispersed. But by the time he realized that Lan Zhan had been trying to talk to him this entire time, Lan Zhan had pulled away and let him be.

After that, Wei Wuxian had been pondering how to approach the Twin Jade, and every time he thought he came up with the perfect solution he’d back out of it as soon as he crossed paths with him. At least the earth shattering hurt had dulled in his chest to a light ache. And in all honesty, he missed Lan Zhan dearly.

He missed teasing him, he missed following him around. He even missed the way he called him “Shameless” for all the little things Wei Wuxian would do to provoke him. And the last words they exchanged, Wei Wuxian had told him to get away from him. A sigh falls from his lips, he really should talk to Lan Zhan sooner or later. He can’t keep avoiding him in his own home. “Tomorrow.” Wei Wuxian declares, setting his fist firmly on his hand. “Tomorrow I’ll talk to him.” He stands and starts pacing back and forth, “I’ll apologize and we should be good, right? It worked in the past!”

The determination fleets from him as fast as it came, and he just rubs his face in exasperation. “Who am I kidding… I doomed this one-sided friendship all by myself.” Wei Wuxian mutters to himself, walking the length of the wall. “What am I supposed to say to him? ‘Hey, Lan Zhan! I’m sorry for ignoring you for three whole weeks and making everything awkward between us, even if you really hurt my feelings, but who cares! Let’s just forget what happened and be friends again?’”

Wei Wuxian turns on his heels and slowly makes his way back to where he left the jar of Emperor’s Smile. As he walks, he continues to ramble to himself. “Why would I tell him he hurt my feelings, I hurt my own feelings. I should probably apologize for cutting his cheek, too… Maybe we could settle it with another duel! We’ll be even then.”

The teen snickers to himself as he sits down once more, silver eyes gaze at the moon and he can’t help but to feel melancholic. “I wish the hairpin would’ve made you smile, Lan Zhan…” He mumbles while leaning back on his hands. “That’s all I wanted. I bet you have the prettiest smile, well deserved for the Twin Jade of Lan… I wish…” I wish I could tell you how you make my heart thump like crazy. How irrational I feel when someone else has your attention.

“Ah, well. I better get back to…” Wei Wuxian stands one last time, picking up the jar of his favorite wine. When he turns to hop off the wall, his heart comes to a stop. Lan Zhan stood at the opposite end of the wall, golden gaze locked on him. A shiver runs up his spine, “Lan Zhan.” He says in a small voice, his name feeling just at home on his tongue. It has been too long since they…

“Wei Ying.” Lan Zhan says calmly, but there’s something in his eyes that Wei Wuxian can’t seem to place his finger on. However, he noticed how Lan Zhan’s shoulders relaxed, tension visibly lifting from them.

They stay silent, taking each other in as if they had never seen or met before. The breeze blows past them, causing Lan Zhan’s robes to dance along with it. The moonlight bathed both teens, but out of both of them Lan Zhan’s beauty seemed to shine through. Just like the first time Wei Wuxian had laid eyes on him, Lan Zhan could only be compared to the most ethereally, beautiful god of ice.

Right, he’s supposed to apologize. Guess tomorrow won’t really happen. Wei Wuxian takes a deep breath and—

“I am sorry, Wei Ying.”

The words are left stuck in his throat, but more importantly… Lan Zhan had just apologized to him. He heard correctly, right? Wei Wuxian hadn’t just imagined it, right?

“Wait, wait, wait.” Wei Wuxian says while waving his hands in front of him, which made him realize he just showed the jars full of wine to Lan Zhan. He quickly hides it behind his back with a nervous smile. “Listen, Lan Zhan, it’s not what it looks like. I— Wait, first of all you don’t… There's nothing to apologize for! It was all me, right? I-I was the idiot that didn’t know when to stop. Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan who knew you could really make me break a sweat!”

A crease forms between Lan Zhan’s brow as he listens the other ramble on.

“A-Also, I’m sorry for cutting your cheek. I swear, I’ve never harmed anyone that way! And it’s nothing against you, either! I’m still trying to understand it, too. I-I really never meant to harm you. I would never…”

“Wei Ying…”

“And I’m not mad! I’m not mad about the hairpin. I dunno what I was thinking. You must’ve been so furious, right?” Wei Wuxian chuckles weakly, waving his free dismissively. “I would’ve been, too. If someone I really dislike gifted me something like that. So, it’s valid that you were mad. I don’t blame you for it, I don’t blame you for hating me, either, I did behave like a fucking asshole to you. It wasn’t really fair. But I do… I still want to be friends with you, acquaintances even!”

At this point, Wei Wuxian was rambling without restraint, just saying whatever came to his mind. He knew he needed to stop talking, he should stop but how could he when his friendship with Lan Zhan was so uncertain. Never in his life he had been so nervous to lose a friend. Never in his life had he wanted to remain by someone’s side as badly as he wanted with Lan Zhan. He just wanted to make sure things are fine between them, even if Lan Zhan hates him from now on, even if all they can do is share a nod at each other. Even if—

“…Never hated Wei Ying.”

His mind stops working as soon as the words register in his mind. Wei Wuxian stares at Lan Zhan with wide, silver eyes. Not just because his words left him shocked, but because Lan Zhan had taken a step closer and grabbed his hand mid air. His heart hammers against his chest, threatening to burst through and run away. Cold fingers wrap around his hand, holding it tighter and Wei Wuxian almost has the urge to pull away because his hands might be way too clammy and dirty for Lan Zhan to hold.

“L-Lan Zhan. Ummm, Lan Zhan why are you—“

His voice breaks as he stammers. He feels like he might combust on the spot, his cheeks and neck carrying a bright red tint. The way Lan Zhan is looking at him just as wide eyed as him indicates that Lan Zhan hadn’t planned to grab his now frozen hand. The golden gaze pins him down, the intensity of it making Wei Wuxian wriggle nervously and soon having to look away.

“Wei Ying does not need to apologize.” Lan Zhan starts before swallowing, throat bobbing as he does so. “Wei Ying did nothing wrong.”

A part of him, the part that is still hurt by Lan Zhan’s actions, believes this is another cruel trick. It wants to run away before he can get hurt by another rejection. It makes him question everything, because he remembers very clearly that Lan Zhan did not touch other people. And he had been clear that Wei Wuxian would never become close to him. Yet, here he is, holding his hand because it was the only way to get Wei Wuxian to listen. At the end, he has to force out a laugh because at this point his heart won’t be able to take another rejection. “Lan Zhan, it’s so sweet you want to spare my feelings like that but you don’t have to do anything of the sort.”

Now the Second Jade of Lan is frowning, and for a moment Wei Wuxian wants to giggle at him. He wants to reach over and smooth the crease between his brows. “I do not lie.” Lan Zhan declared with too much sincerity.

Wei Wuxian was almost amused by his response. A sigh slips by before redirecting his gaze back at Lan Zhan, “Saying such things can lead you into trouble. No one can be that honest. No matter what, there will always be a lie underneath everything.” A gentle smile sits on his lips, his eyes fall on their locked hands. “You don’t have to pity me. I’m just glad we’re talking again.”

Lan Zhan’s lips press into a thin line before closing his eyes for a brief moment. He takes a deep breath and soon reopens his golden pools. “I apologize to Wei Ying. I hurt, disrespected and took Wei Ying for granted. I have reflected on my errors.”

Wei Wuxian can’t keep listening, his head shakes furiously, red ribbon whipping along his long ponytail. “Lan Zhan, please stop. I-I already said it was my own fault. Aiya, Lan Zhan I’m not that fragile! Let’s… Lets forget all of this happened, okay?”

“Wei Ying… ” Lan Zhan says his name, almost pleading, hand squeezing Wei Wuxian’s. The action causes him to finally, fully look at Lan Zhan and a soft gasp escaped his lips.

Lan Zhan had always worn a simple guan holding up a half bun in place with a simple jade hairpin, and his forehead ribbon. His eyes hadn’t moved from the simple headwear, for the usual pin was replaced by the one Wei Wuxian had gifted him three weeks ago. How was that possible…? Lan Zhan had broken it, it snapped in half, and yet it sat neatly on Lan Zhan’s guan. He didn’t even realize that he had let go of the jar of wine, didn’t even notice Lan Zhan moving at top speed to catch it but he welcomed Lan Zhan getting close to him. The closeness gave him a chance to inspect the hairpin better. A light blue hairpin with a lotus flower dangling from a thin chain. It really was the one that Wei Wuxian had gifted him.

“Lan Zhan… how… why?” Wei Wuxian let go of Lan Zhan’s hand only to stumble back. He was still trying to process what he was seeing. “That’s… but you…”

“Mn…” Lan Zhan responds, lowering his head in a courteous bow. Though, he now carried a solemn expression. “I…” his mouth opens and closes several times, searching for the right words.

Meanwhile, Wei Wuxian had his eyes fixed on the hairpin. He couldn’t believe Lan Zhan was wearing it. He couldn’t believe Lan Zhan had kept it! “You really kept it…? But I thought you hated it… I don’t understand, why did you break it?”

“I did not mean to break the hairpin…” Lan Zhan replies, the tip of his ears turning a soft shade of red. He pauses for a moment, taking a deep breath. “I… I enjoyed Wei Ying’s gift. I might have gotten…” He clears his throat. “I failed to measure my own strength.”

He blinks a few times, and soon breaks into a fit of laughter. Wei Wuxian wraps his arms around his stomach, urging himself to stop laughing but it only causes him to laugh harder. “Oh, Lan Zhan! I can’t believe it, I simply can’t! I’ve been moping around for nothing!” The Jiang disciple said between laughs and soon leaned towards Lan Zhan, a warm smile on his face. The first smile he’s shown in weeks. “Lan Zhan, dear Lan Zhan, you really liked my gift?”

“Mn.” Lan Zhan responds, golden gaze finding silver pools. “After our duel, I took it to get it fixed.”

Wei Wuxian gapes at the Lan cultivator. Is that why Lan Zhan brought food from Caiyi town every day for the past three weeks? He was constantly checking the process of the hairpin being fixed. Butterflies are set free in his stomach, his cheeks warming up. He feels like he might just grow wings and fly away.

Lan Zhan liked his gift. He liked his gift this entire time. Oh god, Lan Zhan liked his gift… then that means, Lan Zhan had been trying to talk to him this entire time to let him know…

“I knew I hurt and upset Wei Ying.” Lan Zhan continues, hands balling into fists. “Our duel… It was meant to help.”

Has he been this blind? Hearing this now only made him think of Lan Xichen’s words.

“Not many people understand him, and I hope you don’t come to the same conclusion as many people tend to do.”

A hand smacks over his face and let’s himself sit down once more, ‘I’m a fucking idiot.’ He scolds himself. Like Nei Huaisang had said, this was all a big misunderstanding. He smacks his face again, and again. Before he could smack himself a fourth time Lan Zhan stops him, the other already sitting next to him. His cold hand holds his warm one, and all Wei Wuxian can think about is how scandalous this would be for Lan Zhan. For anyone to see, and how both of them sat underneath the moonlight, the stars blinking in and out of existence.

“Lan Zhan…” he whispers, his gaze on their intertwined hands. The beating of his heart only becomes faster,  “I really, really thought you hated me. And if you do, and you’re just pretending then you really are as cruel as they say.”

“I don’t hate Wei Ying.” Lan Zhan declares, ears turning bright red. “I simply needed to look for what most cannot see. Wei Ying is noble, kind, just and righteous. Loud…” Wei Wuxian can’t help but laugh at the last statement which earns a glare from the other. “You dueled Jin Qiang… On my behalf.”

“Ah— Anyone would’ve done the same.” Wei Wuxian brushed off, turning his flushed face away from Lan Zhan. Though, he has to turn his face right back. “Besides, Jin Qiang deserves that… He said some pretty fucked up things, so I put him in his place.”

Lan Zhan pursed his lips but stayed quiet for a moment, he wondered what Jin Qiand could’ve said to make Wei Wuxian so angry. To Lan Zhan, it can’t be anything he’s not used to. In the end, even if Wei Wuxian has turned his world upside down, Lan Zhan couldn’t be happier to have the Jiang teen by his side once more. He’s brought out his thoughts when Wei Wuxian scoots closer, a soft gasp escaping.

“Lan Zhan, is my gift the first one you’ve accepted? How will your shufu feel if this Jiang Head disciple is receiving special attention from his favorite nephew? Such scandal!” Wei Wuxian teased and then laughed at the lack of response. Laughing next to Lan Zhan again really made his chest feel lighter, like he had found his way out of a dense fog and finally be able to breathe the crisp air of the Gusu mountains. “How did you know I was here, anyways? You weren’t patrolling tonight.”

“I saw you leaving. I was waiting.” The twin jade answered, golden eyes warm like honey as they gaze at the Jiang teen. “Wei Ying broke the rules again.”

“What? It's not even close to curfew yet!” Wei Wuxian protests, weaving his hands in exasperation though he drags Lan Zhan’s hand with his, not wanting to pull away. He could get used to the feeling of having Lan Zhan’s hand slotted into his every day.

“Alcohol is forbidden.” The Lan recites with much ease and expertise.

A smile soon creeps onto Wei Wuxian’s face. Mischief written all over. “Well, I guess we’ll have to fight over it, huh?” Wei Wuxian is already standing, determination in his razor-sharp gaze. He stares at the other with a bright smile while unsheathing Suibian. “I promise I’ll go easy on you this time.”

Lan Zhan follows suit, Bichen already in hands while the other one is holding the jar of  Emperor's smile. The small, lotus flower sways with his movements and he has to admit, the hairpin does suit him. Wei Wuxian can’t help but chuckle. Out of all the little gifts he had given him, this might be his favorite. Once he’s back to his room, he’ll have to apologize to both Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang for getting caught and losing the wine. Though, that was the least of his worries at the moment, not when Lan Zhan stood in front of him just like the first night they met.

“Never hold back. Not while we dance.” There’s a ghost of a smile on Lan Zhan’s lips, and Wei Wuxian feels his heart flutter. He was right, Lan Zhan does have the prettiest smile he has ever seen.
